After watching a slew of RTT videos I went with one of these to put on my Subaru Forester Wilderness. I'm a "light" over lander who will go out maybe a dozen times a year so I didn't need anything heavy duty so to speak, plus I wanted something very light as it will be left on the Subie year round.

I bought one about 9 months ago. My question is how do you get rid of that chemical smell inside the tent? It is truly obnoxious. I've tried airing it out for days at a time and it seems to dissipate a bit but as soon as I close it for a day or two, the next time I open its all stinky again. That brand new industrial strength glue smell. I love it otherwise just can't get rid of that smell.

I would try washing the mattress liner and wipe down the canvas with a soft cleaner. Also a few camping trips getting rained on might help 😂

I'm interested in the mount location. Any reason you wanted to place it more over the cab? I have a CX Classic shell from ARE(not the reinforced version) on my tacoma, double cab short bed. I've had mixed feelings about getting an RTT and putting it onto the shell the a prinsu or frontrunner rack system when it comes to dynamic/static weight. Since this RTT is longer than the shell, I was thinking about trying to mount it partially on the cab to relieve some of the weight from the shell. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@BluegrassOverland
@BluegrassOverland 11 ай бұрын
Mounting the tent to the camper shell is best practice. The bed was designed to handle the weight more so than the cab. However, my topper is old and I don’t trust it to hold the weight. With that being said, a tent should be mounted to the shell OR the cab. Not both. The bed flexes and twists differently than the cab on purpose. Could you mount it on both and get away with it? Probably. Just be aware it will introduce a lot of stress to your mounting hardware
@caseyquinn4598
@caseyquinn4598 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for the reply. I don’t know why I didn’t think about how the bed flexes independently from the cab; the shell it is! With some bed stiffeners.

Your set up looks like the RTT needs to be moved toward the rear of the vehicle by about a foot or so. It looks like the windshield is ducting the air directly under the RTT while driving down the highway. It may cause some lift and it will certainly reduce MPG that far forward. Nice rig though.
@wayawolf1967

I am very familiar with the "dance" we do tucking in the tent before collapsing the top down. I have a Palomino slide in pop up camper and it takes me about 5 minutes to set up or break down. I cheat a little because I use the ceiling/roof fan to vacuum the air out as I am collapsing the top down. It works great to prevent pinching or damaging the tent material. I have only seen a few RTTs with a roof fan but I would add one if I ever get a RTT for my FJ. The Palomino goes on my Silverado 2500HD. Motel room on wheels with bathroom and shower. Great videos Brother ! I live over in Harrodsburg, KY and travel out west to CO, NM, AZ, WY every year.

Great video Thank you!......where is the last place you camped at in this video? I know the camp on 208 that you stayed the first night. Last time we camped there it cost me 180 dollars. It is legal to camp there. But it isn't legal to drive to the campsite according to friendly LBL ranger! So we haven't been able to camp there this year.
@BluegrassOverland
@BluegrassOverland Жыл бұрын
I believe the last camp site was on road 157. I’m sorry to hear you had some issues on your trip. There are no signs, listings, or any type of indication that would notify you that vehicles are not allowed. Did the friendly ranger provide any reason for why that spot in particular is off limits?
@vancechapman

@BluegrassOverland Yes sir..... if you look on the MVUM (they use Avenza maps) you will see that the road leading to that camp site isn't on the map. I was told if you get more than 1 vehicle width off the MVUM they can give you a ticket.

If you stay to the right as we did in the video, you will not cross the water again. You are correct that Gaia goes across the river to the other side, but more often than not the water is too deep in the middle to make it without going full submarine mode
