May I know your thought process behind 1by? i was suggested 2x especially if am going to do a lot of hilly trails.
@WattAndMore2 ай бұрын
My original thought was potential less maintenance as there is only the rear derailleur, which in case of a gravel bike is good. Especially when it is a bit bumpy on the road it is less likely that the chain drops off. It also has a very clean look, which I like. Now, after 2 years, I still like it, however, it has its downsides, such as: it is a 13 speed, if you search for a spare chain-link, not every mechanic has chain-links for such a thin 13-speed chain, as everything is a bit thinner, it potentially is more often required to adjust the shifting. When it comes to hills, personally, I never felt like I miss a gear, additionally, I think you can also upgrade up to 10-51T as far as I remember. Hope it helps.

I'm looking at getting canyon grizl 6 1by aluminium, it has SRAM Apex Wide & Cassette SRAM XPLR 11-44 12s what's your opinion on this bike?
@WattAndMore11 ай бұрын
I can only recommend doing it. The current AL bikes are good - I have a Canyon Endurance AL version here - they are superb and a benefit of AL on a gravel bike is if there is a crash and some damage on the frame it is not catastrophe like it would be with a CF frame. 1by would be my personal preference again, I would not want to change that anymore - even now after 1.5yrs riding it. I can't say too much about the SRAM - I never rode SRAM in my life, just googled it a bit, seems decent, but as said no experience there. Let me know if you get it and how it feels, would be really interested :)

Is the Superblast good for people with wide feet like me do you think?
@WattAndMore Жыл бұрын
Intuitively, I would say yes. It is generally quite spacious and the fit is still good and firm enough. Generally, I see Asics has wider toe boxes, which I like and the Superblast is on the upper range of having space amongst those.

The Asics looks a lot longer then the Adidas. Is the Superblast true to size? Do you have any issues with heel slippage?
@WattAndMore Жыл бұрын
Indeed it does, it also looks longer and generally bigger than all of my other running shoes around. The Superblast is true to size yes (It is a US 10 in this video). No, never experienced issues with slipping around - the foot sits well in the shoe generally. I am not sliding around or so.

Interested in the DI 2. Thanks for the review. I may consider the EKAR 13 speed now. Is it electronic shifting?
@WattAndMore Жыл бұрын
I have the Di2 on my road bike, solid one too, but I don't have experience how it would perform when everything shakes. . No, the Ekar is a mechanical one, specifically made for gravel bikes - and you really feel it is well thought through. e.g. the rear derailleur is quite more robust, I realized the thumb lever makes quite sense for a gravel bike, when being on the drop bar on a rougher surface and you wanna shift, you can still hold a firm grip at any time and shift smoothly parallely.

The "balance" part is actually really interesting. I might have some old training data that proves this statement. We did multiple lactate measurements per week and there was one training session in which I performed very badly. The measurements showed that the baseline of my lactate was higher than ever and that was why I couldn't really go fast. This training session was right after work and I rushed there to make it on time and somehow fit it into my shedule, which I stressed about the whole day. I better should have skipped this session and have done an easy run or something like that.
@WattAndMore Жыл бұрын
Very good point, thank you! Happened not only once to me.. Interesting point with the lactate measurements. So far I did not see (at least I think) in the lactate, but I also did not measure so frequently. However, we have the simple tools like HR, where it is often visible, but I am then "meeeh, did not sleep so well..." (often without even questioning why I did not sleep well). Funny how often I trick myself and find excuses, when all bells are already ringing.. Balance is so easy in theory... in theory..

So in hindsight would you say having a 40mm suspension fork would be the way to go in this event?
@WattAndMore Жыл бұрын
Thinking of the rougher parts, especially some parts in Croatia and the last ~100km - yes, absolutely that would have helped. After 400km of gravel and the constant shaking a 40mm (or even some kind of shock absorber in the stem) would have helped a lot. I started with higher tire pressure, which I think was good as the whole part in Slovenia (first ~150km) was really smooth gravel, but it changes pretty abruptly. For the final part, I actually let some air out of the tire, this already helped a lot.

@@WattAndMoreThe more I see those shakey gravel races/paths the more I think a hardtail modded with a dropbar with fast rolling XC tires would be the best for it :)

Hey Peter, thanks for the Video! I started to train more seriously/structured last year and it's really a struggle to find this balance. Stress from work and the tendency to crank up the volume to soon led to problems with my calves and getting totally fatigued two weeks ago. Right now I'm trying to give my body some rest (its hard) and I'm thinking about getting a coach. But it shure is a lot of money for me and I'm not shure what to look for really. How to decide which coach to hire?
@WattAndMore Жыл бұрын
I can absolutely relate. Happened to me so often, each time I was thinking I got it and started ramping up (which was definitely too fast and radical in hinsight), I had some kind of hip issue, calf injury or Achilles problems. I wish you all the best with your calf, that kind of things are really a test for the patience. Personally, I think it is a great idea although it might take some time to find the right one. Some things that might help is that he/she is asking from the beginning about your constraints like previous injuries, stressful job and general life, that might already show the training plan will be integrated in your life instead of putting on top as an additional stress. There is not one right way of a plan, which needs to feel hard to be good, but there is a right way for you. Have some calls with various coaches to see different mentalities. The first call and kick-off is usually free, if not, it feels a bit of a no-go for me, because these coaching are normally all mid to long-term and charging on the first minute is usually not the way. I can get you on touch with my coach if you are interested, just let me know :)

It's a very good shoe. Fast. Quite stable for the stack height. You can really feel the propulsion forward during running especially the faster you run. The upper is comfortable, fits my feet well. I feel it takes a bit of time to get used to, as you need to hit the airpods properly during running to get the full effect and the foam is quite erosive and only good until 300-400km (Adidas Lightstrike foam seems to hold forever in comparison).
