1:29 Welcome to the Jimmy Piersall fan club, where we are true fans of baseball, unlike the idiots that showed up with ABBA and disco records that were causing problems and started a riot that eventually caused the second game to be forfeited in favor of the Detroit Tigers.

We would get general admission seats for 2 bucks then go to the Golden box seats in the 3rd inning where my sister worked and get the seats no one showed up for. Life was good 👍

So weird listening to him say "White Sox". Also they should of remodeled and kept old Comiskey. Another iconic legendary baseball shrine that was ruined and torn down.

I've watched this whole clip and the whole '79 one. I like how they repeatedly focus on the same season-ticket holders or whoever the heck was at every game. Wonder where all those folks are now?

My wife and I sat out in the bleachers with Harry on a Wednesday afternoon when he was announcing games in the bleachers. Falstaff was the Sox beer at the time and Harry had a huge cooler full of it. He drank most of that cooler and never moved from that seat. He either had one hell of a bladder or a tube running into a bucket. One guy said to him,"don't you ever have to take a piss?". After the game my wife got Harry['s autograph which we still have.

How many beers do you think he drank without pissing?

I remember Harry telling Jimmy to "hand me a Falstaff, will ya Jimmy?". Those were the days.

I felt Disco Demolition Day was self defeating because how did all those fans get those records? Did record stores give them away, were they shoplifted? People probably bought them, putting money in the artists pockets. They don't care what you do with them after you get them anyway. Second worst promotion in baseball history next to 10 cent beer night in Cleveland. I heard they took them from their parents so 80,000 people must be double secret grounded.

I belong to the smallest subset of Harry fans, those who heard him during his one-year stint in Oakland. I was 15 and, along with one of my friends, thought Harry was hilarious. A ball would be hooked over the A's bullpen down the left field line and Harry -- on radio only -- would enthuse "if it stays fair!" His famous "It might be, it could be....." often ended with a catch 10 feet in front of the warning track. But he was a big presence on the broadcasts and definitely shook things up as opposed to the calmer Monte Moore.

The White Sox are apparently the first pro team to use this song, but the first sports team to do so was the Minnesota Golden Gophers hoops team.

Some of the White Sox "new owners" worst PR moves. Pay tv and that stupid SportVision. Firing Harry and Jimmy Piersall and demolishing the great BIG LEAGUE ballpark. And you wonder why they do not draw fans.

That old double decker was a classic. At least i got to step foot in it once before they tore it down in 1990. Nancy and Harry sounded a WORLD of a lot better at the palace.

@@johnpiet6495 Agreed, einhorn and reinsdorf should have been crucified for their crimes against Pale Hose nation. Letting Big Hurt go after 15 seasons, firing Ozzie, and refusing to resign the Condor??? Theres a reason I go to the sunday games only now. Second thought, reinsdorf should be HANGED DRAWN AND QUARTERED.

@MrBennetzen -- I don't know if he ever was! Hey! I'm a lifelong White Sox fan (as my user name indicates) and the Sox having to forfeit that game would've been upsetting to fans like myself if the Sox weren't having a mediocre season anyway. That fiasco was arguably the most exciting thing to happen at Comiskey Park that year. LOL☺ Meanwhile 2005 was the "next year" I'd been waiting for since their 1959 pennant! Yessss!☺

@MrBennetzen -- Actually it was Bill Veeck's son who came up with the idea of getting Steve Dahl to lead an anti-disco rally between games of a twi-night double-header. The blame goes to the people in the stands who were getting high and ran out an the field in violation of ballpark rules. Dahl never encouraged them to do so. However since then Steve Dahl has apologized for what happened and even made his peace with Jimmy Piersall. Since then Dahl and family've been loyal White Sox fans.

back then, we'd buy general admission tickets on gameday and migrate all the way up to the Golden box seats and rarely get kicked out of our seats. Going to those games in the late 70's/early 80's made winning the 2005 WS so much sweeter!
@IDF198713 жыл бұрын
@MrBennetzen He tried singing "Take me out to the Ballgame" to get them back in their seats and was pleading with the fans. I know Nancy played "Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye" when the Chicago police showed up in baby blue riot gear and the fans fled.

Excellent video! I can't tell you how many times I hear a Cub Fan talk about how the tradition started with Harry in Wrigley Field. I often thought that if Harry had stayed with Sportsvision, if the Sox would have become more popular with the fans? Then again, it was 1980 and cable television was still in its infancy so WGN had the Cubs game, free on television.

"For it's root, root, root for the WHITE SOX..." I'm sorry, I know he did call games for them and admittedly I didn't grow up with Harry (but I did grow up with someone just as good, Vin Scully...Vin's the best play-by-play man ever in baseball, Harry maybe the best color man...and I'm a METS FAN, so I'm all messed up on this, lol) but that just doesn't sound right! He HAS to say "Root, root, root for the CUB-BIES" right? Isn't there some cosmic law--Cubs lose, but have Harry with 'em?

Cubs fans aren't noted for being the most knowledgeable or even for paying attention. They think they have some great tradition because their stadium is older than dirt, but it is really just an ancient mausoleum that smells like piss, that should have been condemned years ago. The truth is, they mean nothing to baseball, except for being a running joke to everyone but their delusional and sadomasochistic fans. If the Cubs were contracted tomorrow, it would be no great loss to baseball.

I remember watching these games when Harry was the commentator. Channel 44 (remember UHF oldsters?) - changed to a PPV channel not long after these clips. This was back when baseball was still very popular. I miss those days and the Comiskey Park where the infamous Black Sox played their season.
