2:35 Being a violinist, I had NO idea a double bass could stretch up that far. Also the fact that it wasn't transposed an octave lower (for the most part) is amazing.

It can’t unless you’re like Jeff Bradetich and have been mastering your instrument for decades and take lessons from cellists with high expectations

this is one of the differences between bassist who started studying years ago and bassist who study now. the first of which most studied with the simandl method, and the latter of which many study with the George Vance method. The vance method teaches many bassist early on how to access the upper register of the bass, and later on explores the harmonics that are seen here off the fingerboard.

We don't realize it, but if you think about it, it makes sense. Even on our instrument, the violin, we can reach crazy frequencies since the intervals between notes shorten as we move up the fingerboard. Still though even thinking of that I'm amazed it can reach that high E.

WOW. Not a single cellist on youtube plays the rhythm correctly in the courante. Not one. Tap out 3/4 when the movement starts in one of those vids and you'll see. This guy actually plays it correctly. Shows how much more attuned bassists are to the exigencies of time and rhythm keeping.

Fantastico. Mai sentito niente di simile con il contrabbasso. Spettacolo unico. Emozionante. Al pari della interpretazione al violoncello della mitica Jacqueline Du Pre.

You motivated me to play this suite, this suite is considered very difficult for cello already! Seeing a double bassist can play it this well and perfect!

What a wonderful performance. The even richer resonances of the larger instrument work so well with the piece. Without taking anything away from the excellent pianist, I'd love to hear it with a full orchestral accompaniment.

He is using "1/2 step scordatura" so he can play the tonic note of all those phrases with the open D string and avoid the two octave jumps, thus staying in position for more precise intonation.

Bass players always play this with harmonic fingerings. Cello players don't. I would never trust my E string for this work, lol. Jeff's a master and it works for him but for me that first cadenza after the big #C is much more lyrical on the G string. I'm stealing the open #C for the last chord in the four chord passages, nice.

I find it easier to play if it's tuned in fifths like a Cello but down an octave. The Elgar Cello Concerto is alot easier to play on a Double Bass if it's tuned in Fifths cause you can finger it like a Cello.

@Mateo Estanislao I would have to shorten the scale length so I can use 5ths tuned strings.

@Mateo Estanislao I'd have to adjust my fingerings a little bit like Joel Quarrington did but 5ths Tuning is pretty much a Tone Enhancer.

@Mateo Estanislao I play Cello and also Double Bass. Standard Dark rosin also works on Double Basses tuned in 5ths because it's pretty sticky, which means that Low C string is going to go Boom.
@RockStarOscarStern634
@RockStarOscarStern634 3 жыл бұрын
@Mateo Estanislao Robert J Spear made a special 5ths Tuned 5 String Double Bass called a 5Bass who's scale length is ideal for Cello fingerings.
