2:35 Being a violinist, I had NO idea a double bass could stretch up that far. Also the fact that it wasn't transposed an octave lower (for the most part) is amazing.

It can’t unless you’re like Jeff Bradetich and have been mastering your instrument for decades and take lessons from cellists with high expectations

this is one of the differences between bassist who started studying years ago and bassist who study now. the first of which most studied with the simandl method, and the latter of which many study with the George Vance method. The vance method teaches many bassist early on how to access the upper register of the bass, and later on explores the harmonics that are seen here off the fingerboard.

I love the interpretation of the first few bars. Very unique and risky, but with that said it was a risk that paid off. It was beautiful.

Lots of comments about this video are crap. Bradetich plays virtuoso high technique, but he also plays with passion; what else do you want?

Play Bass concertos because otherwise we will compare you to Dupre
@JoshuaLo27322 жыл бұрын
@@johnny2303 Yes , as a cello + bass player, I still don't think bass players playing cello concertos on the bass is a good idea.... cello ranges are really different from bass. To get a good sound on The double bass as a solo instrument means that you not only must ace every note and also play it passionately and musically, which is extremely challenging because we always have a painful time playing high note . Double Bass players always "pretend" to be a cello , and forget everything about the music . That's why I chose Bryars Bass concerto as as my no 1 concerto (with Vanhal.) Because it really take out quality sound from the original double bass , not the "fake" cello. Also , I don't think you can compare anyone to du pre , she's just perfect in many ways.

@@JoshuaLo2732 To be honest I think as long as the performer does a great interpretation I think cello concertos on double bass are fine. It's for sure different than the intended sound but adds something quite pleasing in py opinion

@@johnny2303 Lol shut up, I'm willing to bet money you can't make Elgar sound as good on cello as Bradetich makes it sound on bass.
@gregoryf4186 Жыл бұрын
@@JoshuaLo2732 when playing cello rep on bass I prefer that the performer plays it an octave down, because what’s the point of playing it on bass if you’re just going to play it in cello range. The bass has a beautiful lower range and I think it’s good to showcase that

I play the cello, and am currently working on the Elgar for my concerto performance in the spring, and I have to say, this is my new favorite recording of the first movement. Your interpretation is just how I play it, and the bass just puts so much power into the piece!

Incredible! Ever sense I first heard this piece I wanted to learn it, but bass is my primary, and cello is more of a side hobby. I don't suspect I'll ever put in the work to get my cello skills that good, but didn't either imagine it being possible on upright. Now I am inspired again to learn this... in a few years.

Thank you for that perfomance! Also I want to say that anyway on cello it sounds differ and I guess artistic conception of music is closer to cello version. The perfomance on bass is really perfect and gives another point of view on this concerto. As a bass player I very appreciate this version. The second important thing is the piano player. She has just unbelivable feeling of what is this music about. Wonderful duet thx once more!

Many years ago (early 80's?), I was listening to "Adventures in Good Music" with Karl Haas. Do y'all remember that show? On one episode, I heard two Elgar pieces for piano and bass. They were hauntingly beautiful, and they have haunted me to today. Would anyone know what they might have been? Two very short Elgar pieces for piano and bass. Maybe one day, I will find out what they were.

obviously all you have to do..is play the cello music
@amitabhgoswami97554 жыл бұрын
@@Kapiwolf123 while yes bass and cello are similar there are differences that make a transcription very helpful. As the bass is actually a transposing instrument(it sounds an octave below) so all cello parts would have to be read an octave up, additionally most bassists use solo strings which tunes the instrument up a whole step meaning that reading the cello score would mean reading every note a minor seventh up. Therefore it is very helpful for bassists not familiar with reading other instruments parts to have a transcription.

I find it easier to play if it's tuned in fifths like a Cello but down an octave. The Elgar Cello Concerto is alot easier to play on a Double Bass if it's tuned in Fifths cause you can finger it like a Cello.

@Mateo Estanislao I would have to shorten the scale length so I can use 5ths tuned strings.

@Mateo Estanislao I'd have to adjust my fingerings a little bit like Joel Quarrington did but 5ths Tuning is pretty much a Tone Enhancer.

@Mateo Estanislao I play Cello and also Double Bass. Standard Dark rosin also works on Double Basses tuned in 5ths because it's pretty sticky, which means that Low C string is going to go Boom.

Ragnar Falch some of those notes are slightly off of the fingerboard, which is already extended past he standard C or C#. so yeah they're really high and have a hard time speaking because the string length is so short.

True but that run is so hard on a bass it's literally off the fingerboard playing getting any sound at all is really difficult honestly almost any great recording has some parts where you could throw shade but watching a great performance is the takeaway sure its important to improve and all that and be critical but it's not the end all be all

i dont like the principal melody. Elgar said that it was his spirit returning from the death and in your perfomance i hardly listen to it. Maybe its because is a cello concerto...
