People from my area call Valparaíso "Valpomeao" meaning, Valpopiss. It is a wretched city ridden with left wingers who vote for more crime. Don't come there back and also avoid Santiago. The same problem but more populated.

I'm not sure what to think when I see the comments. I have lived all my life in Valparaiso, and sure is not the safest place on earth, but is not the most dangerous either. Every country/city has good and bad neighborhoods. I love my city with al its good and bad stuff. Sorry for your experience though

As a Chilean, I would never recommend going to Valparaíso to a foreign tourist. Even I avoid going there as much as possible. The city has been romanticized quite a bit abroad (for some reason I don't understand), but not people, Valparaíso is a city in decline...in the same way that Santiago has become unsafe now.

Hi. I am from Valparaíso. Everything that the political left touches, becomes a sh*thole. Valparaíso is doomed to be a new Chicago, where the crimes are rampant and the place at night is very dangerous. You need a lot of street smarts to be in this city. This city loves the anarchy, coupled with the massive uncontrolled immigration, among them many criminals, this destination is not recommended if you are accustomed to safer places. And it will remain this way for a veeeeery long time. This is the reality, we, chileans, live every day. Sorry for your bad experience.

Its nothing to do with 'progresiveness". lol Valparaiso is the only rich culturewise city to visit, sadly is very but very dangerous, i only recommend chile to visit the nature, and valpo (but being very carefully).

This is heartbreaking. I'm from Viña del Mar, but I work in Valparaíso. I really love this city. It has so much to offer (beautiful landscapes, wonderful people and many great places to visit) but within the last few decades this city has gone in a large downfall of bad public administration and a weird culture of filth, crime and decadence. Hope you can overcome this traumatic experience. A big hug from Chile!

@@KoalaTravelSolo venezuelan mafias and inmigrants mostly :( chile was lil south america oasis until 2018ish when venezuelan people came in mass along with gangs like the aragua train etc happens that both political parties started to bring people from haiti and venezuela etc to make them vote in his favour but the thing went out of control and now is nobody land and people hide at 6 8 pm inb4 malls used to close at 2 am now 8pm ;( still you can visit etc but you have to be careful with your belongings don't use much the cellphone on the street and be with some1 else or a group etc also valparaiso in cliche there are lots of safer places that you can visit with more attractive and wealthier enviroment more safety cops etc cheers from chile.

I am chilean. I am sorry about your terrible experience. is a must for travelers to know. that provably all over the world but definitely in South America. you have to be cautious and be very street smart and low key. low profile. otherwise you will become a target for thieves . using security might not be a bad idea... and for the budget version. meet friendly locals , talk to people and walk with them... get insightful about the warnings. Traveling is beautiful, but there are dangers in each location. snakes that can kill you in CENTRAL AMERICA. or criminal people in night life in Santiago... any how. stay safe. research and don't let a bad experience label a whole country or destination as Bad. cheers

Hot air from the desert bumped into the cooler air from the ocean creating a thick fog. One lucky place will get good rain from that, sometimes it causes storms. Most of the time it happened in location very far away from where it was originated.
