I’m a carpenter and going to have my red seal by January 2025. I started in 2018 at 19 years old. I’m thinking of going into civil engineering. I’m not sure if it’s the right move. I just really want to get off the tools but I love construction. Even though it can really suck! lol I love it.

You dont actually work in construction. You just manage those who do.

I love this! I totally agree with your comment to get outside and learn how things are built! As a project manager, I see so many PE's that just want to sit inside and do submittals...get out and learn - it will help you in the end.

Hi Kienen, I own a sign company in Arizona. Potential clients send me blueprints to bid on the signs for commercial building projects. It would be nice if they would just send me what I need to bid, but they send me ALL the blueprints & I need to go thru them to find the signs required. Is there a section where they are most likely to be? Thanks in advance for your help! Keith

can a civil engineer design buildings in any way ,because i love designing buildings i believe i'm really creative with it but if my high school grades prevent me of studying architecture should i go for the civil engineering, are they allowed to design just like the architects job ?

The thing is you can still become a millionaire as a civil engineer if you do a lot of work and some side hustle, and I do agree that your passion and comfort for your job is very important as well.

Yeah I'm late with this comment, but the shirt sleeve toilet guy did what he had to. To avoid someone having to have to find alternate ways to get his butt wipe why don't yall make sure that the workers are equipped with all there necessary needs. Toilet paper should never run out in the first place in my opinion. But it's Hella funny still.

Dude this was so incredibly helpful. You described every aspect of the job perfectly. I am still starting off in the industry as an estimator and I have had trouble here and there because I did not know how to build a job due to my lack of experience. Everything you said was very insightful and I will definitely be referring back to this video every now and again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

When you say people should not expect to have a life in construction, that is not true. As an individual you need to stand up for yourself and say you will only work hours that you are being paid for. If they want you to work extra hours they need to pay you or give you time in leu. If you start working extra hours, for nothing, then you raise the expectation of your employer, and cause a ripple effect. We need to stop doing what they expect, and demanding a good work life balance. I have been in the industry 30 years. And I see the younger people come in and feel like they have to bend over backwards. You don't. I have worked extra hours, but I always make sure I am compensated for it in some manner. If you do not ask, you will not receive. If you do not receive, leave. (Obviously find another job before you quit, but leave none the less).
