I am the owner of this Cobra and it is my daughter driving it. The video is intended as a joke. The engine is a bored and stroked aluminum block 351 Windsor, now 427 cubic inches. I did a lot of experimenting to end up with this combination. The original engine, a crate motor 351 (as a 392") was powerful (430HP) but had an inherent oiling design problem which caused it to seize. What all these Hot Rod Magazine engine tests don't tell you is how drivable the engine is !!!!! The 392" (430HP) was very drivable. Rather than waste my money on a replacement from Ford and funding their Research and Development, I opted for a custom motor from RDI in North Carolina. The engine was 85lbs lighter than the cast iron block so the steering was much lighter and the handling was very nimble. The engine had a radical camshaft (un-drivable) to produce 538HP. Power was so excessive that it was borderline non-drivable, just a matter of controlling wheel spin. I changed the camshaft to a milder profile (same as was in the original crate motor 392) and the car became amazingly drivable. For all you power hungry freaks (I was one, too) remember that 99.9% of your driving is not wide-open-throttle. The car dyno'd at 485HP but was a pussy-cat to drive . It was totally drivable but if I floored it in third gear you could feel the wheels start to spin. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone wanting a street driving Cobra to follow my direction regarding the camshaft profile. Also, the 427" has a duel-plane intake manifold and a 600CFM carburetor. The common mistake is to use a single plane manifold and a carb that is too big. The smaller Venturi's of the primary throttle will give higher air speed and far better throttle response. Again, its all about enjoying street driving. The performance figures are 0 to 129 mph in 11.3 seconds. Don't know what the 0-60 is.

GM discountinued the saturn series due to lack of sales, they didnt sell as good as thier other models so if you want to point fingers start with the general public. i own a 2001 sl2 with the sl1 fifth gear mod and i am only getting 37mpg so i dont believe anybody is getting 40 or more hwy and if you are then please tell me the secret.

John Pike my sisters SL2 gets nearly 40 mpg highway. Saturn out sold most all of GMs other economy cars
@johnpike96128 жыл бұрын
+2003SaturnFan a stock sl2? not at 75 it doesn't. also out selling all the other "ECONOMY" cars does not mean enough sales to maintain a seperate brand and manufacturing facility
@SaturnIonQCVTi8 жыл бұрын
John Pike yeah our 98 SL2 gets nearly 40 mpg at 75 we drove from Winston Salem NC to Carowinds in South Carolina and averaged about 38 mpg

John Pike Saturn still lives on through Chevy and Opel. The Chevy Captiva and Malibu and the Opel GT

John Pike they didn't discontinue due to lack of sales they discontinued Saturn,Pontiac,hummer,Saab. To stay a float. Sadly Saturn was axed. As long as they are on the road I will have one. We have/had 4 3 Ions and 1 S-Series. GM just don't realize what they did to a gem

What's with the static/buzzing in the audio? It's not my audio system, was just listening to the old 1957 Elmore recording on the Atlantic City organ and it was fine.

What people don't realize is that new safetly standards have meant that automakers have had to add hundreds of pounds of extra safety equipment to cars, which makes then less fuel efficient because they are heavier. The main reason we have seen the mpg of cars stay about the same is because of better transmissions and in some cars direct injection engines. Also, the reason all cars are egg shaped is because of the rollover requirements. The apex pillars have to be larger in case of a roll over and it helps if the cars is fairly round in the event of a rollover.

We can park a first-gen SOHC Neon next to this Saturn. Aside from their regrettable habit of fallong apart, they could bust the 40mpg barrier with ease. They were a bit roomier than the Saturns and had similarly excellent handling (both cars are respected in autocross). The Neon was steel, just like 90% of the Saturn (only the skin was plastic). Proud Saturn owner here (and nevermind the 5.9L Dakota I have next to it...)

Well your little clip here has shown me that it is fine for me to leave my .44 mag at home and just carry my .22LR. Sorry to say but I hike in bear county and a .22LR is not going to cut it.

If your getting less than 38 MPG you are doing something wrong. I have had a lot of cars and Im a GM man but boy did they fuck up and let Saturn die. This was plain stupid. I brought a 95 sl2 with 243,000 miles and it kicks ass!! So far i have replaced wipers, 3 bulbs, and a tie rod. OH yeah the starter is going out now. These are great cars.

You can buy a used Saturn S-Series for next to nothing. Remarkable little cars. My 97 sw1 5-speed manual. So inexpensive to own and drive. 28 miles per gallon in the city 40 Highway. These cars to definitely compete with Hondas and Toyota. Keep your fluids fresh and clean.

One other comment for the folks who say Saturns break down... Saturns don't die - people kill them by not checking the oil and maintaining them.

Todd Donald my 1996 Saturn still runs great it's just too bad the previous owner never washed the salt off the bottom making the floor rot
@wattspeakers12 жыл бұрын
I agree. I have owned 4 saturns. My 95 got 41.5 mpg consistently. My current 2000 SW2 gets 33 average and I drive 60 + miles per day which means I can go back and forth to work all week on 10 gallons roughly.

I use a .44 magnum in my house, 9mm on the street, but I would carry the .44 in a heart beat if I wasnt worried about hitting someone behind the bad guy. BTW a .44 will not blow a person in half, a 5.56x45 nato has almost twice the energy of a .44 magnum and it is known for its lack of stopping power I know the .44 bullet has more mass, but I am talking about blowing someone in half no it will not it will just put a big hole in you

My 98 sc1 is still running great at 390000km. Fuel efficency is still about 45 mpg imp. in the city. It's not a perfect car but has been fairly cheap to maintain and easy to repair myself. They're not built for racing so if you drive them nicely they will last as most cars will.
