I highly recommend a clear floor hoist. You can always roll a battery-supporting workbench under it :) Glad things have turned a corner for you mate. I learned many things about life when I was in Canada, mostly from Red Green. "Women don't play hard to get. Women ARE hard to get." XD My recent experience came down to conditioning, and how you think things should go, versus how it actually goes. Most of the trouble is refusing to accept the things you have no control over. The other valuable lesson, indeed an enormously liberating lesson - is that most people don't care about you, they're too busy caring about themselves. Not necessarily selfishly, it's just the human condition that we can't experience someone else's life. So don't worry about what other people think. Cause they're not thinking about you.

Hey Arlin, it's been years since we last talked (You came up to the Campbell River Campus to get some motors they were disposing) but just wanted to chime in. I'm not in the EV scene anymore, though I still have my Saturn in storage. I'm really sorry this happened to you. Stories like this is why I decided to never consider marriage or even dating. It's rough out there and can get very ugly once the lawyers tally up the assets. KZbin is full of people (mostly men) who went through the divorce industry and lived to tell about it. I met many guys in my career who had stories to tell. Some were on the upswing, others weren't. Keep your head cool and keep your wits about you. You will reach the other side. It's not impossible.

I think you are incorrect, the laminations that the windings go around is what transfers the heat into the housing, and the wires are right next to it.

A type of non conductive oil or other fluid could be a option, and the motor could be serviced or modified. The rotor is a cylinder so wetted surface area shouldn't be causing too much drag.
@garbizwal
@garbizwal 11 ай бұрын
Been there done that. Sorry It has a lot of limits as well. Potting is hands down the best way to go. You don't need to "service or modify" the windings the only thing needing service is the bearings and I can still get to them. With oil it will find its way out. It will wick up the wires... leak past o-rings etc. You also then have to seal it super good and get the right amount of oil in so you don't cause a tone of drag on the rotor and then you need to allow for thermal expansion and contraction. Its a LOT harder to deal with. On top of all of that Oil doesn't conduct heat nearly as well as this potting.
@garbizwal
@garbizwal 11 ай бұрын
This potting has a thermal conductivity of 2.2 W/mK and Oil has a thermal conductivity of .125 W/mK so this will conduct heat out of the windings 17.6x as good!

there's no real sense in going with too big of a controller. The torque of the motor is limited by the field strength of the rotor magnets, so putting too much current in the stator can actually de-gauss the magnets, further reducing the torque of the motor. Once the electromagnetic field strength matches the field strength of the permanent magnets, the only way to increase horsepower is to have more voltage available, so the motor can turn higher RPM at that maximum torque. (gear it down, rev it up)
@garbizwal
@garbizwal 11 ай бұрын
Not true. The whole de-gauss the magnets from too much strength is a old wives' tale. Its never happened in real life. There will be limitations for sure but I am not worried in the slightest about demagnetizing the magnets. Heat is a bigger concern but with them buried in the laminations of the rotor they won't get as hot as a SMPM motor. There is 2 parts to these motors and its big reason we had to add MTPA. You are not just using the stator to push and pull on the magnets but you are also pulling on the rotor iron like a SR motor. As for RPM these are geared low already I already spin them to 15000 rpm. Many people had no idea I would be able to get 300hp from these but I have proven that in another video. As the motor approaches saturation the inductance drops and that will be a challenge but with the split windings to each controller it will help by making the inductance 2x.

The problem is the 6 phase wires are not as perfect as I would like them for something I am planning to put many miles on. But time will tell how this works out and how I can support them while routing them to the controllers.

Heating the potting and using a vacuum chamber would have helped. Hope it got in there enough! Does the potting have good thermal conductivity?
@garbizwal
@garbizwal 11 ай бұрын
Yes. I spent a lot of time looking at Datasheets to find something with the best thermal conductivity but still could flow as much as possible. Vacuum chamber would have been next to impossible. Non the less simply getting the heat from the end turns to the case quicker should be a big win when I really push this thing.
