Slugs are the only real option when shooting high power at extended distances, and as said barrel choice is critical, Being a slug manufacturer I can tune the slug to the gun rather than only being able to tune the gun to the slug , very subtle changes in cog also make a huge difference, if the gun has the power and twist rate a boat tail slug takes some beating
@George.___Күн бұрын
Is there a particular slug you would recommend for the .22 Gamo Swarm Magnum Gen3i?
@PremierslugsКүн бұрын
@George.___ with any gun it depends on several factors as Tony said, twist rate power ect , when testing i generally ask the owner what they are currently shooting and start slightly lighter the go up in one grain steps to try and find the harmonic node then fine tune from there
@George.___22 сағат бұрын
@ I heard the barrel twist rate is 1 in 15.75”. According to a pellet wt. vs twist rate chart made by another air gunner the pellet weight for .22 should be 18.2gr. Indeed the weight seems to work pretty well. I use JTS Dead Center pellets 18.21gr. The power is ~ 30 ft-lbs give or take. I thought about measuring barrel harmonics with a piezoelectric pickup in a dozen or so different spots and recording the sound and spectra it makes it each shot. Observing the main spikes of frequency & amplitude and calculating wavelengths at each spot, perhaps some useful pattern will emerge? I also suspect the molded factory moderator core might be a main source of inconsistency. It’s not bad but I’m trying to push its capabilities of precision to the limits of all the interacting contributing factors. How do you go about finding barrel harmonics?
@Premierslugs22 сағат бұрын
@ nothing quite so hi tech , start with a slug that is lighter than you are really looking for , shoot it go up one grain shoot that keep going up and you will see the poi change , there will be several points when the slug weight , speed will match the barrel . Obviously change the speed up or down and you change to node and the poi

Yeah really interesting Guys. So what slug barrel would you recommend Tony for a sub 12 ghost and what calibre. Appreciated. Have a great Christmas and new year. P.s guys ill see you at the shooting show in February.

Hi Richard. Thanks for sharing. To inform the Revere I have in .177cal loves slugs from 13-22grain. This is from a standard LW match grade barrel from Daystate factory. The 20grain ZANs shoots accurately from 14-23 ft/ibs and the 22grain solids too. With the ZANs I don`t really have to play-a-lot they just work within all velocity ranges. However the H&Ns takes more finetuning. Nope...I am not a salesman from ZAN. Merry Christmas & Happy Newyear.

Great show and very interesting. I have tried slugs and I was not overly impressed. My Vixen fires 10g Zans quite well at 30m but not as consistent or accurate as 10.34 grain JSB domed pellets. In .22 calibre, very poor. Tony is right, you need a fair amount of power to get good results. Have a great Christmas lads and all the best for the New Year. 👍

Even with pure soft lead a sub 12 airgun IMO is so slow that a hollow point slug won’t expand and “IF” one may expand you most likely need a micrometer to detect it. I see no advantage to a slug in a sub 12 FPE airgun at average hunting distances say 40 yards or less. High powered airguns on the other hand is quite a different result on flesh and bone. Again IMO 900+ FPS and soft lead with a large opening is more on par for proper slug performance.
@crazycressy7986Күн бұрын
It's the same with .22lr hollow points ,I've never found one that has expanded, and my other hobby is metal detecting, and I've found hundreds of .22lr hollow point heads and non have expanded. ok, some would be misses, but not one ,they need to open the cavity more for them to work ,i had the same with .223 Barns grenades, they would act as a FMJ unless I did hot loads almost to the point as getting flatted primers so had to back off the charge a bit

Based on my admittedly limited amount of slug shooting, I've found them to be ok - no better or worse than most other brands to be honest. I think it's fair to say that all slugs take an amount of time and effort to set up just right. As I think Tony said in the video, rifles that are very tunable - like the Alpha/Delta Wolf, and some FX rifles too - work well with slugs because they can be fine tuned. Thanks for watching and have a great Christmas.
