I'm thinking of doing something like this. I might use some Thompson's water sealer accompanied by a protective layer of flex seal over the sealer for the parts that touch the ground. Not trying to be a hater, I really like the deck, but have you experienced any rot yet? I'm hoping I could do something like this and make it last a couple years somehow. Is there anything you'd do differently?
@FireFightHandymanServicesАй бұрын
@@collinnadolsky3411 that doesn’t sound like a bad plan! As far as rot, so far so good. The only thing I had to do this year was screw down a few planks that were warped a little. There’s no rot at all….looking back now I should have put some roofing paper on top of the OSB underneath the fence planks just for extra waterproofing. If you add the waterproofing I think your deck will last longer than a few years. I expect to get 4-5 years out of this one. I’m going to do a nice waterproof stain on it soon.

Having just built a L shaped planter box during the past couple of days, I'm seriously looking at doing something like this myself & have taken note re: the roofing paper (or felt as we call it in the UK). The only difference with my 'would be' project is that I'd like to lay artificial grass onto the decking. One question! Where your decking was laid onto turf, I'm looking at building mine onto paving slabs. But am worried about the rain causing rot. Yours is the best video I've seen so far with pallet decking
@FireFightHandymanServices9 күн бұрын
@@stephenchatterley3583 paving pads would certainly make the wood last longer. I was on a budget for this build or I would have done something like that. Deck is still standing strong and no rot at all. Thanks for watching!

@@stephenchatterley3583 thanks for watching. I would think putting them on pavers would keep it off the ground and ultimately delay the rot.

asking as a person with zero carpentry knowledge: what difference would it have made if you had skipped the OSB? I'd like to build a similar deck and if my plan is for it to last one-two seasons, do you think it's worth paying for the OSB? Also, how thick are the fence planks and what wood are they made from? Anyhow, thanks a lot for the inspiration!
@FireFightHandymanServices5 ай бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching! I would think skipping the OSB would make it less sturdy and definitely shorten the lifespan of the deck. But for one to two seasons you should be okay. The OSB is around $14.00 a sheet. Worth paying for in my opinion. The fence planks are about 1 inch thick and made from various types of wood…typically cedar or pine.
