This repair is still going strong after 1500nm of ocean sailing

You have no idea really. We were full time live-aboard cruisers from 2000 to 2013. Even then it was a rich man's game. Virtually no free anchorages as all the good ones were taken by corporate or brown envelope government entities. We had an 11 mtr ketch with a lloyds A rating so we had the right boat for two people. It is just too damn expensive as the 'ruperts and carolines' have taken over the industry with ridiculous things like the 'arc' (All ruperts and carolines). THE time for the private 'normal' individual to go sailing was in the 60's or 70's - even in the 80's!. Now ? - utter waste of time. And yes, we had money as we sold two houses and had an early retirement pension. It was still a joke in terms of pricing for marinas. FORGET anchoring - practically any safe anchorage has 'private' (mafia type) moorings. Trev, you don't know the realities. Sorry... but....................

"REGISTRATION, INSURANCE, BILLS" ---- ERRR YES !!!!! EXACTLY THE SAME AS YACHTING. forget whinging about solar re-supply. it was a con from the start. YOU DO NOT LIVE OFF GRID !!!!!!!. this makes it sound like you start from nothing... you never did, you just wasted money to buy a so called 'off grid' place that is now costing you money. Again, you are really not understanding what you are talking about. Dont listen to this bs merchant.

The biggest problem, I believe, is family, wife, young children, financial responsibilities on land (not mine, theirs). It's always easier to live dreams when we don't take on responsibilities in the past that make certain things impossible (or at least more difficult) for us in the future. Sure that we can always change everything and every decision we make, but always to gain something, we lose something else. Complicated to decide.

G'day Douglas, I agree life is complicated. I lived that live, but I kept my dream alive, I purchased a cheaper older yacht and just went sailing. I fixed it as I travelled, I added to it as I sailed. It why I point out in my podcast and video that buying an older cheaper and in many cases stronger yacht can provide your sailing dream. Many people believe they need to spend hundreds of thousands for a vessel . I hope you get to live your dream mate.

In respect to your comment about charging consumers for putting their surplus electricity from their solar in to the grid. I suspect the power companies see this as another source of revenue that idiots will pay.

I agree, given the bonus's CEO's of Australian energy providers are awarding themselves for excessive profits. I would agree. Living off grid and managing my own power needs is very liberating.

Gday Wally, You have a great yacht for offshore passage making, fuller keel, protected rudder, sea kindly, well built when yacht were built to last a life time, that''s a comfortable cruiser. I have a 1974, 44ft Koopmans ketch built in Holland of 8mm Alloy, TinTin is a modified fin bolted on, also a skeg hung rudder. I call TinTin the axe because he chops thru big green water like an axe, not huge volume but fast for his age, TinTin is comfortable in a big sea way and I've been hoveto in more than one storm. When I found TinTin he was discarded and looked terrible as his owner had died but he had this spirit, it felt like he was working his mooring lines to escape the pen. We have done a lot of sea miles since I cut him out of that pen, cleaned him up and pointed his bow into big green swells of the Southern Ocean. My only advice go cruising and explore our world as soon as you can, life is short.

I went 2 months ago, the only handrails then were on the steps up to the first plateau, no hand rails up to and around the crater edge. The sulphur fumes were very strong. Fantastic adventure and would also do again.

Agreed, awesome experience fantastic access for those with less mobility. We tried to visit the volcano on Ambrym, it is a 25km walk one way or 50km return, solid full day trek. The wind changed we found our yacht on a lee shore and never got back to Ambrym.
