i don’t know if you even are active on here or read comments but i just got rejected from a youth wind symphony and it feels SO bad. way worse than it’s ever felt to be rejected from something like this before. i really really wanted to get into this. i’ve cried three times today over it and i wanted to say i really appreciate you being authentic about the struggles musicians face because they are so real.

you will saddle your parents with 200k in debt, unless you get grants, but not everyone gets those, also when done if you never get an orchestra job which they dont make as much as a nurse, you will never find a good paying job. If you arent playing till your body gives up and do that for a good 5 years dont waste your time. Endless stories of trumpt players going till their lips are torn up and bleeding, same with guitarist, going untill their fingers are bleeding. You either be possessed with it, or dont bother trying to be a pro. Youre not the only one pushing for a limited spot on an orchestra.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been going through burnout recently and this really helps me know that im not alone. Being self-destructive can really destroy and break down someones mental health and this is so comforting to me knowing that im not alone so truly, thank you.

Thank you so much I needed to hear this! I just finished my college auditions and I’m so happy that I got into all of them. This video made me realize I’m not alone. I come from a small town that has very limited access to performing and having my own high school music teachers doubt my potential and them having the guts to tell me that I wouldn"t get into any music school really hurt me and even though I was the only one in my high school that got into and won Principal chair at All state Honor band. now that I got into my dream music school made me much more confident in myself and the fact that I was able to prove my teachers wrong that I got into my dream school and watching this video made me feel a thousand times better about myself and that I’m not alone! THANK YOU!!

Great video, just scrambling to find any info about music school, as I just got offered a place at a conservatoire in London, and making sure I know what the hell I'm getting into. 😅

So pre screening is basically an audition video before the audition? I’m looking at applying for graduate school and that’s one thing that I am confused about lol

It’s really beautiful to see someone so in love with what they do. I lost a lot of that during my undergrad years at UNT and have been recovering over many years to love the process of composing again. God bless you and good fortune in pursuing the love of music!

This is something I've came to realise with learning how to write/produce my own music. There's been so many times in the past where I've gotten things wrong and I just wanted to quit. But looking at the progress I've made so far really makes me happy that I've kept on going. Thanks for putting this out there, advice like this goes a looong way. Best of luck with your studies!

Hi! It always depends on need-based and merit-based for what the school gives you. My scholarship covers about 25% of my total cost and about 45% of my tuition!

I am now 71 and, having gotten my degree in music (many years ago), I would highly suggest that (for those wondering about majoring in music) one should attend a community college's music program before deciding on going on to enrolling into a music program and getting their music degree. When I did this back in the 1970s, I found that 90% of the students who started in the music classes at the community college that I went to dropped out within the first semester. It was simply too difficult to study ear training, piano and harmony at the same time. If you find that you like these classes, then pursuing a music degree is totally viable. Whether or not you'll want to make money at doing music is actually another question. While in school one can already make money in music by teaching and going on gigs. In a way, that experience is like the community college experience. You will perform music for those who aren't listening because you'll likely play background music at a party, and you'll find students who don't really want to learn an instrument and are there because their parents want them to be there. If you enjoy teaching and gigging in spite of this, then pursuing a living by making money in music is, again, viable. I have too many music acquaintances (music students) who have earned their music degree and don't even play anymore. In the meantime, they still have to pay off their student loans.

This is very true and insightful. Thank you so much for sharing your story. Music is a hard future to pursue whether you end up continuing it or not after college. And what you were talking about is something I noticed a lot during my first year of school and something I’m sure I’ll keep learning more about
