Hi brother, I really appreciate this channel and videos. I want to thank you for your research and sharing your immense knowledge on such important topics. I started investigating the early church fathers to see for myself how things read and how this may affect my beliefs / practices. In this video I again got some new insights/things to consider! However, I want to comment on this statement: Lot was spared for this single good deed. The scripture doesn’t describe any other good deeds of his or any other virtues he possessed. From this, we ought to learn how greatly God esteems hospitality, because this single act was enough to save Lot... From my reading of scriptures, while I would agree that Lot wasn't as righteous and faithful before God as Abraham, I do believe there are at least 2 more things to consider: 1. Lot was not as wicked as the rest of the population: * 2 Peter 2:7-8 as another comment below points out, here it desribes Lot as just (righteous), who was vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked -- vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds) This verse reminds of Ezekiel 9:4-6: LORD said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it ... slay old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark I think similarly, Lot was perhaps someone who was "sighing" over the abominations within Sodom & Gomorah. Finally, bible also implies Lot was saved perhaps at least in part for Abraham's sake: Gen 19:29 when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow... it would be possible, since God communicated with Abraham about destroying these cities, that Abraham would plead for Lot Thanks again! I just wanted to share this.

Thank you for your comment. I certainly agree that Lot despised the wickedness happening in Sodom, although he wasn't spared for his hatred of evil but his commitment to a good deed. This video is based on what I've read from the fathers on this subject, very little of the video is actually my own inputs. I'm often quoting various fathers in my videos without disclosing that I'm quoting them, because people are generally overwhelmed by many quotes. That section on hospitality is based on what Origen says, "Hear these words, you who close your houses to strangers; hear these words, you who avoid a guest as an enemy. Lot was living in Sodom. We do not read of other good deeds of his. The hospitality alone occurring at that time is mentioned. He escapes the flames, he escapes the conflagration for this reason alone: because he opened his house to strangers. Angels entered the hospitable house; fire entered the houses closed to strangers." Origen, Homilies on Genesis, Homily 5

@@ante-nicenechristianity Ahh, I see! Thank you for clarifying and including Origen's quote! Appreciate your respect for the early church fathers. Something I myeslf hadn't considred much (or at all) in the past, but this seems a very reasonable approach. Thanks!

@alexxr1 I'm convinced it's the only reasonable approach, otherwise we're just choosing what we want from a big buffet of different beliefs. If you didn't already know, we have some unlisted videos on our channel from calls that we've had with some people interested in learning about the importance of the fathers and what they believed about different subjects kzbin.info/aero/PLyqzUejgGmxUTNmysYrPIJHBA9lUybvpN&feature=shared

And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

I understand and agree, and yet I feel as though I would not be so strict. I am entirely against head coverings that are merely decorations and not truly coverings, for if they were "coverings" they would "cover." I abhor doilies and such things! They are a wicked and evil deceptions, and all who wear them deceive themselves, and do not truly follow the Law of God. But it is also true that religious practice does not save, but rather the heart posture behind the practice. I would rather my wife wear a doily because she is (wrongly) convinced that it is what God desires of her, than wear the most modest face veil but have a heart to wear nothing on her head whatsoever. It is the heart that matters more than the head, for "love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Pet. 4:8). Judge and you will be judged, condemn and you will be condemned, forgive and you will be forgiven (Luke 6:37). Forgive others who continually wear head coverings that are immodest, or you will have merely one day of disobedience and not be forgiven, for as strict as you are with others, God will be strict with you (Matt. 7:2), and you will stand condemned. Again, I agree, veils are for modesty, and the amount of hair that a veil covers does matter, but not as much as the heart posture behind wearing the veil, the posture of wanting to submit to God's royal law. You will do well if you approve what is virtuous without condemning what is unnecessary. Again, "love covers a multitude of sins," and it would be better that all loved each other and none wore veils than that all wore veils and none loved each other. Your words in this video have lacked love. Speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15), or you do not fulfill God's royal law. We are God's, only if we love one another (John 13:35). Again, your point of view is mostly correct, but if you have the truth but not love, you can only do hurt. And if you have love but not the truth, you love what you do not know, and you will find on judgement day that you have loved what is hideous. So, you must have both truth and love, or you will perish. May God draw near to you as you draw near to Him! Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from this age to the age to come! And with Him be glorified the Blessed Lamb of God, Christ the Lord, and the Spirit which indwells all who are bought by His blood! Amen!

How can a woman claim to love her fellow man while she causes him to stumble? If you acknowledge women should cover because of modesty, why do you condone their immodesty? Love must be demonstrated with actions or else it isn't love. You can't kill a man and claim to love him at the same time. Watch the whole video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqS2fIyqe5trosk

I'm actually really liking this one. I'm hearing a lot of things that always pop up into my head, like Israel being an allegory for a human, etc. I'm honestly surprised that I don't hear such interpretations elsewhere, even though they're super obvious. To me, a lot of the Old Testament is a story about the evolution of a human mind, illustrated through all the descendants of Adam (and his physical body, Eve), who represents the most primal mind, which later culminates in the New Testament with Jesus, being the ultimate goal for a human mind, a sort of an enlightened mind. And I'm not even digging too deep here because it's all surface level stuff:) And of course, there are more than just one interpretation.

We recommend devoting yourself to studying the Scriptures and church fathers for the rest of your life, though, not just a few of their writings. You could read all of seven of Ignatius' short letters and Clement of Rome and Barnabas in a single week. They're not very long. As you continue to read them, you won't find new doctrines throughout the centuries, but the same doctrines being reaffirmed over time by each new generation of Christians... at least until you get to Constantine.
