Yes, the Kitfox (I had a model 1) boot cowl give great access to the behind the panel area, but it also lets in water running off the windshield, unless your cowl seals real tight. I like the RANS I have now boot cowl better, as the windshield overlaps it. BUT...., having just spent much time upside down with my head by the rudder pedals doing wiring on my own EDGE EFI install, gives me a re-newed appreciation for the Kitfox cowl!

Seems like there should be a log of each parts measurement while going back together. Like bottom ring thickness x thousands, next ring x thousands etc... that way impending failure can be tracked and prevented once enoungh data has been collected.

Where does the fuel return line go? Back into the header tank? Do the fuel caps on the wings have vents? Trying to wrap my head around the whole EFI thing.

Yes the fuel return goes back into the header tank. Both tank caps are vented and the header tank is vented to the right main fuel tank.

Does the Rotax charging system provide enough amps to energize the EFI system and pumps as well as Avionics and lights? Or did you add additional charging capacity? And how much horsepower does the big bore kit.add with the efi?
@stolcreekaviation5507 Жыл бұрын
The stock Rotax alt is rated at 20amps at full RPM. The EDGE EFI uses 6-7amps so the stock charging is usually enough but struggles at idle. We do offer secondary alternators for more charging power plus redundancy. The 1484cc Big Bore adds 14hp and the EFI adds 6hp bringing it to 120hp total.
@dieseldan5189 Жыл бұрын
@@stolcreekaviation5507 thanks for the reply. I think those overly powerful external fuel pumps use the most amps. I saw an elegant design that copied automotive tech where low amp submersible fuel pumps are mounted in the header tank. These pumps don’t need to cycle so much fuel to keep cool since they are submerged in the tank. So they only draw about 2 amps at the most. The pressure regulator was also mounted inside the header tank which eliminated an external return line. 20% increase in power is substantial. I wanted to put an Edge EFI on my Rotax but the plenum would not fit. I bought an SDS efi system instead. SDS managed to eliminate the plenum. The Rotax mostly keeps its stock profile.

Since this installation features an oxygen sensor, does the owner plan to completely avoid leaded fuel? … or is the sensor used only during an initial calibration/tuning phase, then taken out of the ECU read-loop?
@stolcreekaviation5507 Жыл бұрын
All of our EFI systems use an O2 sensor for initial tuning and setup. Then it can be removed and run closed loop from the ECU fuel map (for 100LL use) or it can be left in and stay active for fuel trimming.

Your mods here might be simple but actually they are both brilliant. The second one adds the secondary benefit of improving throttle control resolution, so that a given amount of control input results in finer control of the fuel system. I used to run VW motors for performance. You can increase HP by making a bigger air cleaner. Like the size on a car. Try looking at a air cleaner for diesel trucks. I used to buy VW's with small air cleaners and flip for money. They were starving their motors for air.

I think Edge should spend more time working on Yamaha engines and to get the cost down. The Rotax line you started with an already expensive engine add another $15,000 to it and ended up with just a few more HP than the 915 and a few pounds lighter. You did not do the industry any favors for all along, one of their biggest enemy is cost. Anything can be done if money is of no concern, the old say, what is engineering, to do something for $3 that any fool can do for $10.

What can we boost our 914UL to chaps? We need 130bhp but only to climb up to 200ft towing a heavy 2 seat 800kg glider. Above the 500ft safe height 115bhp would be fine. I'm thinking: Tweak the existing turbo boost above 40mBar, with a boost controller. Fit an intercooler (even if it has to be fitted externally to the cowling) Most importantly we need a larger capacity oil cooler as the oil temp gets to top of the green 110C by the time we've climbed to 3000ft.

When we put the EDGE EFI and intercooler on the 914 we got 126hp. That was as 41in/hg.

Late to a past conversation, but regarding welding crankshft journals; how much welding is done, stress relieving, crank alignment, etc.? I come from a performance motorcycle background and I recall reading how welded cranks were breaking due to stresses imparted by the welding process. Once company went to a special anerobic adhesive to lock the crank alignment and no more crack issues. With all the Edge engines flying, it seems the welded crank is not an issue. Just curious as to how tbey got there.
@stolcreekaviation55072 жыл бұрын
Yes the crank will break with a deep hot weld. We have just been getting in and out quick with a light tack weld (not incorporating to much heat in the web) and the crank does fine.

How do avation engine manufacturers keep the cylinders from wearing uneven? Using a horizontal engine wont the pistons wear the bottoms of the cylinders quicker, eventually causing blow by.
@stolcreekaviation55072 жыл бұрын
The connecting rod is offset to help a little with that but these engines have no problem running several thousand hours without that being an issue.

@stolcreekaviation55072 жыл бұрын
It is recommended but I wouldn’t say mandatory. The two gears are the only mandatory matched set. It would really depend on the condition of your old dog hub, you would hate to mess up your large gear right away with a badly worn dog hub.

Unfortunately, the people that are really interested in what you’re doing can’t see through your eyes or read your mind. Watch your own video keeping in mind you’ve never done this before, and you’ll be surprised. Put a simple cam on your visor or above your bench that you could angle at your press now and then. Watching someone perform magic or music is one thing, instruction is yet another. Your camera view should be nothing less than what “you need to see” to accomplish a given task. Anything less are not worth a thumbs up, let alone a subscription. “LET ME SEE WHAT YOU SEE, AND THEN TALK ABOUT”... and I’ll be back!

@stolcreekaviation55073 жыл бұрын
Yes you can tell a difference. With the 1484cc big bore you are adding 14hp, that means more pitch in your prop and higher cruise speed. It is hard to make a high drag airplane go faster but the more aerodynamic you are the more speed you will get. Everyone notices the the better take off and climb performance. For reference a KitFox type aircraft will pick up about 5-8mph.

Question for ya. I hear 600 hours if the motor is run on “a lot” of avgas, 800 if on “some”, and 1000 otherwise. I’m the third owner of a plane with 570 hours, and the other owners “mostly used” auto premium. What’s your recommendation? Thanks!
@stolcreekaviation55073 жыл бұрын
The biggest thing in my opinion is making sure the gearbox is still shimmed properly. How much the engine has been run at low RPM where the gear box is chattering makes a big difference, flight schools are the worst about this. There is a dog ear friction test that can be done to get a gauge on how it is shimmed and getting a trend line with that is even better. Cleaning the lead out of the clutch pack is good but I have not seen it really bad after just 600hrs.
@Curtster19623 жыл бұрын
@@stolcreekaviation5507 thanks for the reply. I don’t notice chattering that everyone talks about, but it’s my first Rotax motor, so maybe it is there and I just don’t know it. Run it!

The 80hp engine with the 100hp cylinders will make about 95hp because of the 80hp cam. Add the EFI system and the total HP should be close to 101hp. Fuel burn should be between 4.5 & 5gal/hr.
