Interesting to hear Kai and John’s thoughts on Adam Forrester at Hearts? I understand you can only fit in so many players in your timeframe. I agree with John about Lennon Millar. Italy will be a great move for his development, they train harder and more regularly than most other leagues and the time he’d get on the ball could be the springboard he’d need to end up at an elite club. Great podcast again Kieran.

Thank you very much for all of your content. I would add a couple of names in Sam Chambers (Leeds Utd) if we can keep him and Jack Fletcher (Man Utd) if we can convince him...Both are very creative midfielders. W have 4 Scots qualified centre halves playing at Man Utd. All dual qualified. You would be hoping that at least one of them is of the level required in time for Scotland:- Tyler Fletcher (also defensive midfielder); Jack Kingdon; Louise Jackson and Daniel Armer.

Thanks for this. Yep - would love for these guys to be convinced to play for us. I just don't see how we attract them when we've got an under 21 setup like we currently do, compared to what they're offered at St George's Park.

Sadly you are correct in what you are saying. England is first option for most dual qualified players (even the son of the former captain...). However I take encouragement from the fact that England can't cap them all... By getting in early as we have done with Armer and Chambers we hopefully increase the prospect of them staying. That said Elliott Anderson and Hayden Hackney show that it often doesn't matter how early you get in.

First part of tactical coaching in youth is true. In my generation was Perisic and I had privilege to play with him for our highschool team. But most of our kids train at young ages swimming and after few years start other sports. But football u play every free time on the street with older guys at least we did.

Great podcast Kieran. As a Hearts supporter and a foundation member I’m very excited about the clubs future. The deal is in two parts. The Jamestown deal has been signed but Tony Blooms investment has to be voted on by 2nd December and probably won’t go through until start of next year. I think Bloom pinpointed Hearts due to our financial success. If you look at the top 3 profitable clubs in the UK, Celtic, Spurs and Hearts were top 3. Now Hearts have shown profit over a sustained amount of time where both Hibs and Aberdeen haven’t. This has more than likely the reason Bloom looked at Hearts.

Sadly I missed you guys live. Question I think John could answer: Does Clement play Souttar on the left centre half position? If so you can kind of understand his few errors against Killie etc. folk may think it doesn’t matter what side you play but it certainly does. Positioning in terms of on the pitch and body position is different for a right footed player who playing on the left of centre half. Just wondered what John’s thoughts are on this?

Talking about whether Clarke is the right man or more interesting replacements - please bear in mind, as I'm sure you do ,managing isn't just about playing styles and tactics. People management is key to getting the best out of international players who spend a short time together. Steve Clarke is massively respected and trusted by the players. It's hard to imagine anyone else having that just now.

Key difference from jimmy Thelin and previous managers, is he has a clear identity and philosophy on how he wants the club to perform both on and off the field. He has galvanised the whole city about being one team, sticking together. His onfield tactics and identity is clear to be seen and he looks for this to be consistent. He also has ensured it is a squad game.

Good to see Joel on with you. As a Hearts supporter and a Foundation member I’m really hoping the Bloom deal goes through in its entirety. I think it will help with the biggest problem in Scottish football at this time in my opinion which is the lack of young players getting a chance. I’m not sure if you’ve seen the data for the percentage of youth players coming through in top tear? The numbers are terrible, Motherwell is the best with 18% but the rest are 4% or under. This I’m hoping will be changed with Blooms investment at Hearts, it’s something I’ve been wanting for years. Even back in the early 90’s I was invited to Federation meeting where we were asked to vote on where we wanted finance to go, I voted to give it to youth system but it was categorically voted down. No one wanted it and of course we spent it on players we couldn’t afford and look where it ended up. Folk need to wake up and stop chasing a short term dream that will never happen.

The biggest insult for me is just how big an inferiority complex there is in the Scottish public. I'm fed up with the whole 'we're only a wee nation' chat, when smaller countries like Iceland and Croatia have gone further than us in recent major tournaments. Scottish football has no ambition for its youth, because it's just accepted that the development isn't good enough

Dave Cormack, the board and the recruitment team all deserve huge credit for the MASSIVE amount of groundwork before Jimmy came in. We have highlighted a certain style we want to play, and the recruitment has been fantastic in filling these positions with young players, mostly from bigger academy clubs and most with some form of youth/u21 international team experience. Also going to the not so popular leagues and trying the best talent from them. The fan experience has also been looked at and changed, taking in a lot of ideas from the fans and trying to implement them, likes of singing sections moved, events for kids before some games etc. Jimmy was contacted before about coming to us a couple of years ago, but he declined. He was targeted to be the main man as his tactics were exactly in line with what the board was aiming for. look at the youngsters at aberdeen, all play the same formation / tactic, and all levels have won leagues or cups or invites to european tournaments. the base is already in place. Jimmy came in, we added a couple more players and it worked - as we had plenty players that can play in his formation, like of shayden is perfect example - he was used as a wing back before, played in his actual position and we are all talking about him. we are all pushing in the right direction at the same time now, long may it last. there will be talk of teams wanting jimmy if this continues, but the fact that the board agreed to wait a couple of months for him - because he had huge loyalty to Elfsborg and refused to walk out of them before their mid season break. fantastic to see such a thing these days, and if he goes, i cannot see him just waking out and leaving us scratching our heads, we need stability, and i think we are finally getting it.

Regardless of whether or not Aberdeen can maintain this form, the problem with sustaining any kind of challenge is the same as it was during some of our good runs under McInnes - it’s difficult to see where Celtic drop many points. Even if Aberdeen could reach 80pts, which no non OF club has ever done, it most likely wouldn’t be enough.

What we learn from Jimmy Thelin is, if you hire / sack enough managers eventually you get lucky 😂. Live few months of the year in Sweden, so seen lot of Thelin teams over the years, even watched a youth game when he was manager at Jönköpings Södra IF.. He has been on a "long list" for German jobs in the past, so he has earned a name for himself outside Sweden before moving to Aberdeen. All that said, he has had a chunk of good fortune with some results.. But, more importantly having the players that can adapt to his style. Modern football the first 10-20 games almost set out how fans / players buy into a manager, with lack of money in Scotland, molding a team can take "Years". So its not being a "good manager" thats sets Thelin apart, its his ability to choose which club to join & understanding they have the players to mold into his style. So many good managers lack the ability to judge a club before jumping into the managers job.
@GothenburgDon
@GothenburgDon 2 ай бұрын
It wasn't luck to be honest. He was approached for the job prior to making Barry Robson permanent but it would have been incredibly challenging to offer him the job after the run of wins Robson got out of the team. It's a very intentional move by the club to avoid hiring SFA coaches that are both conditioned to fear celtic and rangers, and deploy a negative set of tactics that requires off the cuff moments from quality players. Managers like Derek McInnes can get good mileage setting up that way, but ultimately progress will stall due to key player injuries and that Aberdeen's squad will never be more individually talented than celtic's.

Seeing a challenge by Aberdeen is FANTASTIC for Scottish football! Rangers and the tribute act have poisoned much of the sport and product that is the SPFL through their cheating and corruption, costing many clubs and devaluing the product; so it is nice to have a new club challenge at the top and making the league more competitive. Hope their success continues and I really hope they get 2nd this season and push Celtic to the wire!

I see it as more of an evolution than a revolution. Lots of progress since Cormack has taken over. He's been good for the club, you could even say he has improved scottish football. According to transfermarket, Aberdeen have the highest transfer profit over the last 5 years and second highest over 10 years, we know how to spot, develop and then sell talent. The young team won the U-18's and you can make a decent team out of ex-aberdeen youth players. Bain, McKenna, Ramsey, O'Donnell, Robertson, Jack, Barron, Campbell, Wright, Fraser, Shankland. Attendance/attmosphere has improved due to the changes in the red shed, the work of stephen mccormick and encouraging kids into the richard donald. New training ground in 2019. Longer contracts for players. Hibs have 15 players who's contract expire this season, Aberdeen only have 5 plus one loanee. Quality staff behind the scenes. (Leven, Rochon, Burrows and Bernhard Peters consultancy is still ongoing.) Although we were poor in the league last season our cup runs were better than average, while in Europe we were competitive in evey game we played. Ain't saying Thelin is the missing peice or we're going to split the OF and be the 2nd best but we have laid solid groundworks for the future.
