Your heli rig do you use a leader lead core fluroetc to pin line down
@PaulScowen
@PaulScowen 3 ай бұрын
Whatever you do you need to be sure the hooklink can easily release should you suffer a break so you’re not going to tether a fish. If there is no weed between the spot and you, fluoro l would work well but that’s unlikely so it’s more realistic to fish the front edge of a baited spot. I have used a length of tungsten tubing free running on the line (it really doesn’t travel up the line on the cast) but having checked it from the boat even surprisingly light weed can hold it up so your spot needs to be fairly clear. Because of this, the heli rig is not ideal when fishing deep margin spots, small holes in weed or later in the season when there is a lot of weed. It is ideal for fishing gravel bars, humps and plateaux’s
@leahmay1011
@leahmay1011 3 ай бұрын
@PaulScowen that's fine I understand the pop up maggot rig. But if using inline with stiff braid or mono could there be a chance of it getting stuck up on weed. But if your fishing soft braid there is also a risk of braid folding over feeder
@PaulScowen
@PaulScowen 3 ай бұрын
@@leahmay1011 if you mean for the hooklink, I would stick to fluoro. If you mean for the mainline then, yes, it has its limitations and is best when you can fish it direct without the line getting hung up on weed. For that reason when fishing deep margins, weedy gravel pits later in the summer and for fishing small holes in the weed it’s not ideal but this time of the year (May) when the weed is manageable and when fishing bars, plateaux’s etc it is extremely effective.
@leahmay1011

@PaulScowen yes the hooklink meterial I'm fishing mainly through Canadian weed but have a few casts with a weed rake but can't clear it 100percent just don't want the hooklink sticking up not looking natural
@PaulScowen
@PaulScowen 3 ай бұрын
@@leahmay1011 the rig in this video is a pop so is designed to stick up vertically. If you are raking I’m assuming that you are fishing close in. This rig will work fine as long as the margins aren’t too deep/steep causing too large an angle in your main line. It would be good to hear if you get many. Good luck

Do you catch many through the night
@PaulScowen
@PaulScowen 3 ай бұрын
The odd one but generally first light up to lunchtime is best. Many tench anglers will wind in at night and get up before the crack of dawn to put their rods out ready for bite time. I struggle with waking up early so by having my rods out all night I’ll often get roused by a screamer at first light, although I’ll also often swap the tench rods for eel rods at night

Hi regards the tench do you apply alot of bait. Or jst use the feeder for baiting
@PaulScowen
@PaulScowen 4 ай бұрын
It really depends on the situation but if in doubt err on the side of caution. I do find that being busy stimulates bites so if just using the feeder to introduce bait then casting regularly can help, assuming there is a decent head of tench in the water you’re fishing.

@PaulScowen might be lucky if get 5 a session fish upto 8 9lb possibly. Say 3 spombs to kick start a swim
@PaulScowen
@PaulScowen 4 ай бұрын
@@leahmay1011 5 fish to 8/9lb is good fishing in anyone’s book 👍 There are times when I’m happy putting a decent bed of bait out but this is generally only if I’m planning a campaign and want the fish to clear areas for me or if there is a big head of fish. I should also note that I wouldn’t usually feed very much when fishing the margins. I much prefer little and often. As the saying goes you can put more in but you can’t take any out. I’ve found that tench are generally pretty tolerant of feeding over them when in numbers. They quickly return to a spot they’ve been feeding on. Topping up a swim will often actually induce a bite. The trouble with putting in too much bait is they can literally graze and are no longer feeding by sight. In this mode they are moving around your swim with their mouths on the bottom randomly sucking up bait and are much more likely to encounter and feel your rig or line. When in this grazing mode they rarely tip up and move slowly around the swim sorting out the food from the stones and silt making them much harder to hook. In a scenario with less bait they are far more likely to arrive in the swim and drop directly onto your hook bait. It’s why the worm kebab & popped up maggots work so well as they stand out. Tench have good eyesight and will hone in on them like a spring carp on a pink popup. The rule of thumb is if you think you’ve been done or should have had a bite add a little more bait and be busy. Unless fishing very low stocked pits recasting feeders every 30-60 minutes when not getting bites will usually make things happen.

That’s great to hear, well done on your tench. Worms are a fantastic tench bait and the worm kebab has perhaps caught more big tench by design than any other method over recent years. Having packed away the river year for another year I’ve just revisited this video for some inspiration for the upcoming tench and bream.😊 It’s certainly interesting to see tench react to line in clear water. Several years back when fishing Wilstone I assumed it was the hook links the fish shied away from and tended to used 5 to 6 pound bs hi tech links to small (14 or 16) hooks mounted on power gum helicopter rigs. However subsequent trips to pits in recent seasons and the advent of underwater footage indicates, as you have shown, that the line management may indeed be the problem, especially when fishing bowstring tight to the indicators. My own observations are that lead core leaders don’t seem to spook the fish in the way mono does - I’ve no idea why but the tench appear to disregard the stuff? Maybe it looks more like weed or perhaps it’s the fact it’s so obvious as to not aero use suspicion and panic?. - I’m not sure but it does seem to work. Another edge I’ve found it to cut the number of lines in the swim. I used to use 3 or 4 rods on some of the larger waters but now rarely use more than two and even then I’ll fish each rod on different spots or at least on the edges of a larger baited area.. I can’t say I sussed this myself but having spoken to a very good carp angler who fishes on the Lea Valley he told me his catch rates had gone up massively just by not having lines in the water. His advice was to forget the size of the water and just prepare the spots correctly and then present the rig to arouse as least panic as possible. This proved sound advice indeed and my catches have not decrease despite supposedly reducing my odds of a bite by having less baited hooks in the water - might be rubbish but food for thought🤔. Anyway good luck for the “new” season. All the best JJ

@@karlmclean2023 I generally use 40lb 7 strand as I like to twist my traces. I don’t use rig sleeves as I want to keep the trace as covert as possible. The only situation I’d use a bait flag is to stop the top hook ripping out when mounting a suspended bait through the dorsal muscle as I believe the more bits you add the more chance of the pike deciding not to take the bait. Using the camera it’s enlightening how pike will often inspect a bait and how they will frequently not take it. Even the camera suspended above the bait significantly reduces takes when fished alongside a bait without the camera.
