I won't have the time to make a video of that for a bit, but if you just used cardboard to make the original tube between the carb and engine and then start wrapping it with fiberglass tape and gasket maker you can slow build it up to what you need and then just dissolve the cardboard away with water.

My boot is different than yours , it is just round on both sides with no bolts but it has those 2 rubber tabs on one side like yours. How do you orient those tabs or does it even matter? I pushed one side on to the carb now the side with those two rubber tabs gets pushed onto the engine side , should I keep those tabs down or up?
@hotrod-machines
@hotrod-machines 3 ай бұрын
If you have tabs and the correct boot they should align with a notch on either the carb side or other side. If there isn't a notch or raised piece then it may not be the original boot and orientation doesn't really matter. Only reason to worry about how these boots go on is to make sure the carb is pointed the right way and make sure that there are no air leaks.

Does the power from the compressor need to be hooked up to a 12v power supply? I measured the resistance for the power and ground for the actual compressor motor (not solenoid, i havent gotten to unwinding all the copper coil yet), and its reading anywhere between 150 ~ 300 ohms! 0:41 "which is kind of special order" NO. No it is not. Using two single pole double throw relays to reverse polarity has been around since there were motors and relays. 0:41 "i'm going to wire up these single pole double throw relays so that they do the exact same thing as a double" Um No. You are NOT doing the exact same thing. If you were energizing both relays at the same time, THEN you would be close to the exact same thing. Doing it this way adds the ability to stop the motor at any given position. You can't do that just using a DPDT relay. FYI on amazon you can find a harness to do this exact thing with. It is pre wired. Very inexpensive.

Would this cause the bike to run like complete crap with choke off but decent with choke on
@hotrod-machines
@hotrod-machines Жыл бұрын
A cracked boot will cause issues with the engine running properly. The carburetor wants to see a 14:1 air to fuel ratio, if you have leaks in the boot the air to fuel ratio gets messed up and it won’t run properly. Turning the choke on reduces the air and enriches the fuel, but if you have an air leak in the boot, turning on the choke may just get the ratio closer to what it should be. You need to repair the air leak.

@hotrod-machines Жыл бұрын
Bikes are put away for the season but when we pull them back out I'll try and grab a video. Float level is pretty simple, just remove the drain plug in the bottom of the bowl and push in the rubber stopper. Then either hold the sight tube up the side of the carburetor bowl or tie it lightly in place. For the AFR we put the 1/4 copper tube as far into the exhaust as possible and then fire up the bikes. This allows use to see the AFR as we adjust idle and throttle on the bike. The challenge with dirt bikes is the way single cylinder bike "suck / blow" through the exhaust. If the AFR is out in the open the exhaust gas moves back and forth across the wideband O2 sensor. Therefor you need a rig and tubing like we have built. The smaller AFR just clamps on the tailpipe of a car.

All the boots I have repaired had cracked because of age, there weren't chunks missing. However if you have some bigger chunks missing just shred up some fiberglass and mix that in with the gasket maker. Once you see how this all lays down you won't be concerned. Just make sure the gasket maker is good for fuel contact. Heck now that I've done it a few times I almost think I could make a new boot from scratch using this technique. Basically a paper mache project.

What you have really isn’t a DPDT relay. A true DPDT relay is less flexible as you have only one control input and both outputs move together. Using two separate relays gives you two coils to actuate rather than one and allows you more flexible as you can also have an “off” position.
