I learn a lot from your very thorough tutorials! Your idea of adding an additional chain at the ends could be really useful for any stitches that seem too compressed. Leaves me with a lot to think about and try! [By the way, I know this is three years old, but when I tried to visit your blog through the links here, my browser didn’t like it-it said something about the certificate and imposters (I don’t know what they are talking about…I just back out when the computer yells at me…but if traffic to your blog has decreased, this could be why). I think I can probably find your blog through a newer video, thanks!]

Hi Beatrix, I am a new Tunisian crocheter. Would you be able to help me? My question is, if a pattern calls for a sport weight yarn and I would like to use a “light” DK weight yarn called Marla by Manos of Uruguay. It is 273 yards per 100 grams. How many more balls would I need to compensate for the weight difference? My pattern requires 1090 yards. How do I calculate this? Thank you so very much!!! Does your e book cover this???
@beatrixsnyman4411
@beatrixsnyman4411 11 ай бұрын
Hello Jean. When you want to substitute a yarn in a pattern, you stay with the yardage of a pattern. Yardage will stay the same. The only thing that happens is that the amount of "balls" will increase when you go for a heavier weight yarn or decrease when you go for a lighter weight, due to the yardage per gram per BALL. So the grams increase, because the yarn is heavier due to thickness, but your yardage in lenght stays the same. Just keep in mind that your item will also become bigger if the yarn is thicker. Does it make sense?

If I have a chain of 225, do I try and fit all 225 on the hook for the foundation before starting next row?
@beatrixsnyman4411
@beatrixsnyman4411 Жыл бұрын
Hello Gina. Yes, you will have 225 loops on your hook, that you picked up from the foundation chain. It will look like knitting stitches on a needle. That is what you will work with, but...a standard Tunisian crochet hook might be too short for so many stitches, depending on the yarn weight you use. You will prefereably use an interchangeable hook with a cable on. There are various brands.

What a WONDERFUL teacher! I'm "hooked" on tunisian recently, and started with patterns, then went to basics. Yup, not the best way. Things i appreciate: stitch anatomy, adding the whys and what happens, GOOD video quality. Now I am collecting all the tools! During covid, I found a double ended hook in a thrift store while I was looking for regular hooks. What a beginning eh? Ps Double ended hooks are not easy to find. Especially if you want aluminum and not bamboo or plastic. Can't even give the plastic away, I am Canadian, so a lot of the time the import fees are prohibitive, so if you have suggestions in that area, it would be tremendously appreciated. Cyndi

@beatrixsnyman4411

Any stitch that does not create the bulk of it at the back like the simple, and the knit which is the worse. Best is, work a stitch combination like the the honeycomb, or work a longer stitch like the double or extended. For Tunisian, no matter the stitch, blocking will be inevitable. Best way to tame those curls.
@littlewiseowl4405
@littlewiseowl4405 Жыл бұрын
@@beatrixsnyman4411 I agree with all of what you said. However, a person does not know WHICH specific stitches to try unless they are NAMED. The generality of where to place hook does not name the list of stitches which balance the front and back tension. I too am a natural fiber snob, so I rely on the stitch to limit the curl. I do not like holes in loose floppy sloppy stitches. I could watch tutorials if I knew which stitch, by name, I should search for. So sorry to ‘go on’. I did watch your video(s) so I was asking for information beyond what you had already said. Example: Purl, honeycomb, reverse, ….. thanks! (If you do not know, it is ok to say that too.)

@@littlewiseowl4405 thank you for your comment on this. It may be something I can look into, so make an extensive list. The reason for how I answered before is because there are really si many different stitches, variations and combinations that it will take some time to make such a list. Lace stitches, for one, can be combinations of basic stitches and techniques, but each different combination option don't necessarily have a name, but the combo of stitches might be excellent for the curl issue. You get what I say. But, thanks for sharing your need with me. I will definately look into compiling such a list 👌

I'm a 'retired' pro dyer/weaver and a lot of my work and techniques developed from 'what if.....' and being very familiar with basics so when I decided to try crochet, Tunisian and Mosaic appealed to me and I'm sort of working the same way--few projects and lots of test swatches (followed by blocking where I found I probably shouldn't judge stitches until they were blocked).
