Do the three 'rules' apply also to minor keys? Is this partimento/rule of the octave?
@ramichaelreviews
@ramichaelreviews 13 күн бұрын
The three most common root movements do also apply to minor keys! The only thing that will be different will be the qualities of the chords. By rule of the octave, do you mean going up a fourth instead of going down a fifth? If so, yes, that does apply here. In Classical music, basses can make wide leaps pretty easily, so leaping up a sixth instead of down a third is fine, but leaping down a seventh instead of going up a step is usually less common. You tend to want to think of everything as if it's going to be sung, sort of for safety's sake, because if a voice can do it, most instruments should be able to do it.

@@ramichaelreviews Thanks for replying. AFAIK Rule of the Octave is a collection of ways for harmonising each note of a scale applied to a bassline, popular with baroque and classical eras composers.

Hi! I was just telling a friend that I think Jimmy Eat World's "Work" is in 8/4, not 4/4, and he told me to look up the concept of hypermeter. Which, admittedly, with my very basic music theory education, I'd never touched on. The potential phrase that I'm looking at in this case is the drums in the verses. That thick "pah, pah, pah" in the snare at the end of the drum lick strikes me as being a "6, 7, 8," not a "2, 3, 4." Or is this a case of hypermeter instead? Thoughts from anyone? I know, not as groundbreaking a song as the examples in this video, but still. :)
@thegirlnextdork
@thegirlnextdork 24 күн бұрын
Okay, I think I've got one. "Hoppípolla" by Sigur Rós. I feel like it has a hypermeter of 4 most of the time, but then the occasional 3? The common thread I feel is in these odd-numbered hypermeter songs is that they have this feeling of "rambling on," like my brain can't neatly organize it until I really sit and listen.
@ramichaelreviews
@ramichaelreviews 23 күн бұрын
@@thegirlnextdork Thanks for your comments! I don't know either of those songs specifically, but I know both bands pretty well. When it comes to 8/4 vs. 4/4: It's more likely that it is 4/4, just the drum pattern is in a two-measure pattern. But even if it is in 8/4 (which is possible), it would likely not change the hypermeter at all - it could still be a standard 4 in both cases. As for your point about odd-numbered hypermeter feeling like they're rambling on, I hadn't thought of it that way before, but I like it! I personally feel it more as abrupt stops before the full thought is finished, but it makes sense to me that you'd hear it as rambling, because the ending is less satisfying. Great insight!

If I write it in the comments here, people can probably avoid the hint of a spoiler: “It appears… I’ve chosen to be a woman… rather than commander of… the Liberation Army.” My issue is equating saving a child with being a woman and with not being a good leader. As someone who wouldn't say they listen to any particular kind of music over another, I would say that Rock music is more focused on being authentic and presenting itself as that, whereas Pop music is more focused on a feeling it wants to sell. I think songs that use Pachelbel's Canon are good examples, Pop music usually uses the progression how it is (e.g. Memories by Maroon 5) whereas Rock music tends to change the progression with a major third instead of a minor one and change other chords too (e.g. Don't Look Back In Anger). Pop music is like a canal and Rock music is more of an artificial river traveling through a garden or something, they both do the same thing but one of them is trying a bit harder (I have no idea if that's a good metaphor but I think you can get the gist). Either way I love your stuff its so underrated, it feels like this channel should have over a thousand subscribers, I hope your channel grows a lot

Your metaphor makes sense, and I get it! I just think it's hard to be very descriptive with what the genre means nowadays, especially when genres are blending into each other so much. But thank you very much for your kind words!

@@abrahamesparza01 We don't have anything rated that high yet - the 93 that Nevermind and Hounds of Love have are tied for #1. It's just a factor of how our rating system works. Everything sits kinda low. That's why I like to show what other scores are around it toward the end of a video: even if the number itself isn't right, I think the order that the scores come in usually is. (But it's also more than one person's opinion often, so it's hard for us to say for sure.)
