Michael's cover of the main theme from Suikoden! This most closely follows the guitar version of the theme from the game.
Michael here: I was struck by how beautiful the little descending line between phrases was in the guitar version of the theme, so I decided to stretch that out and make it the focus of my theme. Doing that caused some fun, crunchy dissonances that I thought were really beautiful in this context. The alto parts of the original guitar theme because a soft, calming pad underneath the melody, and I changed a few of those notes to make it fit the different chords suggested by my adapted descending line.
I really love how, in the original theme, the return of the A section is a loose inverse of the main melody. I decided I'd do the same thing with the B section, and the descending line becomes a new ascending line - but it kind of disappears behind the more active melody here, and I really like that.
My favorite thing I added was in the return of the A section: the descending line has a new third voice, mostly in sixths with the previous top voice. I was really happy with how that turned out.
Finally, as I was putting finishing touches on this, I thought it needed something. It made me think of being in a peaceful garden, so I thought I'd include the sound of a fountain. I found this excellent recording by bigsoftie on Freesound: freesound.org/s/278140/
I hope you all enjoy! This game's score is excellent, and this is one of the best tracks from it.
