Hey man! Been watching a very long time. In fact, you inspired me to go for building a Double Bass Array using a MiniDSP and then a final room correction using Dirac Live Bass Control. Dude, 2-4 subs are absolutely incredible. A double bass array? There is absolutely nothing like it. In fact, it’s so easy to setup and I got so excited about it, I did a write up over it at AVSForum called “DBA Made… Easy?” It’s actually really easy and I got astonishing results. Thank you for the inspiration.

Man.. I've always loved your content and you have guided me through my SUB journey, but this review was baiscally all your older reviews with PB 17's in the backround. We understtod the "dual" factor years ago when you were educating us. This is not what we want to hear for these new 17 Ultra's. We basically want to know about the DSP, the room correction, the sound difference with 2 voice coils, how much better than the PB 16's are these subs really. We love you man, but this was not much info.

@@cedo2297 I'm sure when you're pushing them to their limits the 16 will outperform. But when you have them Both setup optimally, there's so much headroom, it still works effectively. Both are flat to 18hz @ reference volumes in my room. Would two 16s be better, oh yea. Definitely. But saying they don't work well just isnt true. Idk about the PB3000 and a 16 though. I made this same mistake when buyin 2 PB 3000's. I absolutly love them and still do. The PB 3000 is a unicorn of a sub. The output and depth is rediculous for the siz and price. But originally I always wanted PB 16's. So I always had that in the back of my mind for the 4 years. I eventually ended up selling them and gettng 3 PB 16 Ultra's. The difference is hard to explain, it's not louder, but it's more bass and deeper. I'm now satified :)

I added two of the SVS Ultra PB17 subs to my existing SVS Ultra PB16 subs for our large family room home theater and the difference between the new and older subs is significant. The PB17 subs are a lot tighter and controlled with expressive mid range capabilities. I use Dirac Live with Bass Control to tame these beasts and it delivers! I ran REW on eas sub independently to find the best locations and positions in my room. Then EQ'd them with Dirac Live. Holy Moly! My sound has never been this good. Of course I pair them with my Ultra Evolution Pinnacles LCR and newer Evolution Elevations above. I am so please with these speakers.

@@vichlau My two PB17 subs are in the front corners of my room facing each other. Keep in mind I have eight 17"x17" soffit bass traps. Both subs are set to 8. They do not need to be lowered like my PB16 subs which are at -22 and -24 but they are closer to me. (4' and 6f'). The SB17 are 12' away from the MLP. Every room is different so finding the best location for subs takes time. The biggest difference between the two PB17 and PB16 is the quality of bass; especially in the mids where I was lacking that with the two SB16 subs.

Small rooms are more exaggerated. A single sub causes dead spots and loud spots. In a small room, it's worse. Dual matching ported deep bass subwoofers largely resolve it. Counterintuitive, but I've done it. Took the measurements. What subwoofer are you using?

My problem is every movie or show i have to chamge the gain and or tweak it some more some less. It works but I wish it did it automatically. My sub is plenty for my room. @Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 Күн бұрын
So it's a small sub, sealed, and it's not a deep bass subwoofer. It operates in a narrow range of bass, and the range that is most susceptible to peaks and nulls. You won't be able to get a sweet spot in your room. No matter where you move, your room is stealing bass and amplifying the bass, at a different frequencies with each position. It's a no win scenario. Sealed subs react differently to room size than ported. Definitely more sensitive to room size, but the narrow range of operation makes it worse. I understand the problem you're having, and I know from experience that dual matching deep bass ported subwoofers work. Probably not the answer you were hoping for, but it's the truth. Honestly I would rely on your main speakers, at least they act like dual subwoofers most of the time. If there is bass in only the left or right side, you lose that. Is this a theater room you want to improve on, or something that is not a big deal? That would determine if it's worth the investment to get your bass right.

@mikedinno8413
@mikedinno8413 9 күн бұрын
The actual way to figure out what crossover to have is to double your bass extension. So if your Towers are rated down to 30Hz then your crossover should be 60Hz.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 9 күн бұрын
So that's the actual way? Dang, I can't believe I've been wrong all these years! 🙃 Seriously though, there are so many variables, and I personally run 90 hertz or higher, even if I have gigantic towers that play down to 20 hertz. Why? Subs are purpose built for everything under 150-200 hertz, and they just do the job of producing bass better. And you aren't cutting off the response to your towers, it just lightens the load on them, and your AVR, allowing it to run cooler, have more headroom, and get better bass overall. If you set your speakers to small and 90 hertz, turn off your subs, and then run a bass sweep, you'll see that your towers still produce output down to their limits. It's just not as much, where it's a hard cutoff point for the subwoofers. Now where you are right is with shallow sounding subs, and those can be crazy boomy at higher crossover points. I tried to help someone with their run of the mill, shallow subwoofer, and it was the most aggravating thing I've tried to do. He was happier than he was before, but I just didn't feel good about the end result. Landed at 60 hertz because the sub was just super boomy above that, yet it trailed off at 45 hertz. So the window of audible bass was between 45 and 60 hertz. Almost not worth having a sub with such a small audible window. My audible window is 20-90 hertz of bass from my subs or more, which sounds a LOT better. So in some cases, with terrible subs, you might be right. With dual matching deep bass subwoofers? You can go up to 200 hertz and it will still sound good, if your settings are proper to begin with. Typically, 90-120 hertz is a good range for me, depending on speaker size. Surrounds, being smaller are typically on the higher end. It's all personal taste, and go with what you prefer, it's your setup and you are the one who is hearing it. I'm just saying that equipment plays a big role, and in the deep bass subwoofer world, 60 hertz is choking off the subs more than I would prefer.

With good room correction, matching dual subwoofers, and the adjustments in my bass hack videos, placement is just not as critical. I'm not saying that my placement is the best it can possibly be, I'm just saying that it doesn't ruin the overall effect. Corner loading subs generates more room gain, but that's easy enough to overcome by adding more subwoofer gain to compensate.

Nice! The gain structure is a little bit different, I run about 3-6 dB hotter on the sub. Still need to measure to see if I can figure out why, whether it's just a different amp, if the response curve is different, or if I can get more bass out of it due to the quality of it. No matter what the reason is, it's a good thing, and something you'll notice. Also, the DSP is a lot more powerful, so you'll notice room correction shows it as further away. Again, not an issue, and adding 4 feet to the post room correction value will make the same positive improvement, just like any deep bass subwoofer. In my case, instead of coming back at 12 feet, it came back at 16 feet, so after my distance hack, it's at 20 feet. Crazy good DSP. Out of curiosity, did you follow my affiliate link? I'm following my tracking, no worries if you didn't. If you did, did it get to the PB-17 page? Sorry if that's asking too much. I've had some link issues I'm trying to figure out.
