It would be good to show where the mulch comes out and whether it’s fuel or electric powered. Also which model it is. I imagine bamboo is quite easy to shred.

Keep up the good work. I also farmed in Tatong leaving in 2019 and know your farm quite well. The leaky weirs we put in worked a treat hydrating the surrounding landscape. We farmed using regenerative principles conserving water and nutrients in the landscape.So once again keep up the good work.

Hey Damian, at the moment we needed to put the project on hold. The creek we want to use has had something change up steam leaving us with periodic water flow. We needed a larger power source and reverted back to solar. We will be looking further into other hydro systems that will work with less water flow. cheers Pedder

So you have a dry creek. Throw rocks in and logs, wait for the rain to come and you'll get water flowing again. If you've got the materials at hand, it's a no brainer.

Do you have any photos of the area before the changes?
@FatCowFarmTatong15 күн бұрын
Hi Andrew, no sorry I don't have photos. This creek bed was just an eroded creek. Very little growing around the area. We noticed the biggest change after a massive rain where the water was caught behind the rock walls. After time the debris filled the gaps and allowed the water to be absorbed sideways. What amazed me was the life that came shortly after. We still have flow and deep pools behind the rock weirs, the water is leaving the landscape and entering the system. And to think this is not mandatory on all dry creek systems. If you need any more information call out. Cheers Pedder.

Did peter andrews not tell you its illegal to alter or restrict water flow, those downstream if they are affected they could sue you and own your paddock, house, land. creek, causeway, river cannot have its water flow altered.

Excellent work, don’t have a watercourse on my farm, hell this year don’t have water in my dams :(, but do this if I see any areas where water has started to wash out, works great now just need it to rain again.

It’s been a dream of mine for many years to bust a heavily degraded and erosion gully ridden property and restore it in exactly this method. Returning some of the natural ecosystem to the land is a massive challenge. But when you couple it with regenerative grazing practices, it can double or triple the rate of recovery.

What is even better than the localized percolation of water is the fact that a small percentage of that water Will eventually percolate all the way down to the deep aquifers.

Nice result. You might not be able to catch this excess, but planting some swamp gums, saligna, casaurina and bottle brush will help sweat in the heat and cool your land. And the fertility will creep back into your place with the fungi.

Dunno where you live I’m SE US and with the weather being everywhere from sunny and almost summer temp to freezing this week, I’ve decided my winter projects are building a hoop house like yours and getting rainwater catchment systems in place. I’ll do my planting in the spring. There’s lots of work to be done to get sustainable systems going.

Hey Fredom - we have a 15k water dedicated to the vegetable garden area inc the hoop house. This is topped up daily on a timer from our top lake. Check out the seaflow videos on how we pump water around the property. We are currently learning the art of preserving foods. These include the vecola method, dehydration, and looking into canning. If you have any help on the preserving methods I would be greatly appreciative. A sense of a humour is what we are finding is to be the main ingredient as we are having mixed results. Thanks for watching and a happy new year cheers Pedder.

@FatCowFarmTatong thankyou for replying back to me. I have small orchard 10 tree's veg patch chickens. Rain water tanks but we don't get much rain. 😒 I work in the heat so I'm so tired when I get home I wish I could do more. I use utube to find recipes that can use my produce in. I'm doing this on my own . I work in aged care and my clients love hearing about my life. This is the way we should be living. I use fowler jars in preserving cook produce and freeze it. I have worm farms I would like to make compost but chooks and worms get left overs. Thankyou for your reply taking time out of your busy life. Julia

Looks a bit over-grazed, if you let it grow longer and move the cattle out before it gets so low, it will recover much more quickly. Goat dung in the swales to cut out evapouration and rot downmore quickly?

It’s a bit rough that it’s actually illegal to put a leaky weir in a watercourse. My local council put a bunch of stones in the creek in my backyard to make mowing easier. The creek would dry out every year and the water would rise rapidly during rain. Since the stones were added, the creek has water all year round and the impacts of flash flooding are lessened. Bloody oath!

Great update and progress. You mention mulching blackberries. Would be interested to know more about what you’re doing and how do you stop them from re shooting or starting again from the small bits of blackberry. Thanks.
@FatCowFarmTatongАй бұрын
Hi Duncan, mulching blackberries has become a hobby. The reports I got from the CSIRO stated you need to cut the canes to about 8 - 10mm. This will ensure you won't get growth from those canes. We are finding that if you mulch before the first frosts you loose about 50% of the mulched area. We found it more like 60 -70%. the frost penetrate the green canes into the soil and kill them out wright. We also mulch during the summer for extra green material for the soils. If you want to talk more send a message through insta gram and we can talk over the phone. Check out our other videos using the Kubota mulcher it will explain more. Cheers Pedr

Why aren't forage crops sown into the rip line, or tagassaste?
@FatCowFarmTatongАй бұрын
The tagassate don't last 5 seconds, all the cattle eat them. They just love them. However we will be planting some sort of cover crop in autumn when the new key lines are put through for the winter. Cheers
@666bruvАй бұрын
@FatCowFarmTatong er, yes. The point of tagassate is to allow it to grow to a size that will allow grazing, it will also allow that paddock to grow a sizeble pasture root mass, also slowing the the flow
@janramonmartinАй бұрын
@@666bruv around here that takes 18 months to achieve, not everyone can afford to spare the paddock for that long
@666bruvАй бұрын
@janramonmartin the point is to allow that paddock to regenerate for more than 18 months. The root mass is too retarded for the flooding that occurs and needs time to grow, etc etc
