Very helpful thanks. Can I ask why Satie wouldn't have written this piece as per your alterations if it makes it easier to play and doesn't change any of the notes being played.
@TommysPianoCorner16 күн бұрын
A great question. I think there are two competing forces at play. First is a notation that is easier to execute. Second, is a notation that expresses the music. I feel Satie has erred towards musical expression and how the performer achieves that is up to them. Redistributing notes is pretty commonplace.

Good explanation. I studied music education, but I’m a voice teacher. I did grow up playing piano and I needed a recap with this song since I did not play it in a while. I wanted to say what you explained at the beginning. As a severely visually, impaired musician. Getting comfortable with the leaping of the distance and making sure the fingers are on the right notes before pressing it. Or slowly doing add-ons. Those are ways that I’ve learned along with your training. Good video.

I'm not familiar with this piece, but it sounds blurry to me at times, like too much sustain or a mic issue. One of Rach's weaker creations, IMO. Even some of the big names struggle making the rather mundane melody line work. It's obvious you put a lot of effort into this piece!
@TommysPianoCorner24 күн бұрын
I came across it in Pianist Magazine - so decided to learn it. I suspect I use a little too much sustain as I agree it sometimes lacks clarity. I’ll perhaps come back to it in a few months and look at refining the pedaling. It also needs the voices separating a little better I think - that might help with the clarity too :-)

Hi Tommy. Thank you, very useful. I am looking to set up an alternative to the MV88 which i have (lightning connector into ipad). Ipad<audio interface <2 mics. I still preref to avoid post processing, so basically want the camara app to record the sound onto video directly. Have you looked into this at all, for example sending the audio from zoom to iphone directly?
@TommysPianoCornerАй бұрын
Hi. This isn’t something I’ve tried directly. Next time I record I’ll give it a try. Theoretically, if microphones are connected via an audio interface, then any app that uses ‘microphones’ will use that connection. After all, if opening say Garageband, the iPad would use the external audio connection over the internal mics without prompting (unlike a laptop that will often ask which device you wish to use). The MV88 has a built in audio interface and the camera app will use it once connected rather than internal mics. Personally though, I prefer the post processing. It takes no time once we have a simple template set and I have found that most video editing software (at a consumer level) has very limited audio options.
@TommysPianoCornerАй бұрын
That said, you might need to configure the audio interface to send a single stereo track as 2 microphones equals two separate audio tracks so the camera software might only pick up one of them? As you’ll have noticed, the MV88 does this automatically.

Hello, Tommy! Thanks for the great video! I'm relatively new to Forscore, but am finding it very useful as leader of the violin or viola sections of my (amateur) orchestra. I use separate score layers for Bowings and Fingerings. I export a PDF containing just the Bowing layer for everyone to use / copy into their printed parts so we are coordinated. I can export a separate PDF that also includes my fingerings to any player who's interested. The Bowing layer is named to identify the orchestra it was relevant to. Another orchestra conductor / leader might prefer a different bowing, so I can create a separate new layer for that and name it accordingly. I was very interested to see your 'Errors' layer and use of highlighting, though. I'd been marking such 'special attention' passages with a big X in the margin (as has long been my practice with paper and pencil), but it's nice NOT to have these 'danger zones' flagged up during performances!
@TommysPianoCornerАй бұрын
Yes, layers functionality is fantastic - especially when combined with other features as you mention here (exporting as PDF). I love forScore and use it daily.

Did I see it wrong or you played the three notes before the grace notes just as fast. I thought we only played the ornaments notes fast not the ones before it. Specially the F before E. It sounded like it was part of the grace notes.
@TommysPianoCorner2 ай бұрын
If I understand where you mean, I suspect it is because I play the grace notes before the beat rather than on it. I mentioned this choice in the video as Chopin uses both grace notes and mordents to indicate a similar pattern. So, I opted to play grace notes before the beat and mordents on it. You might prefer to play them on the beat which is perfectly fine. If this is not what you mean, can you tell me the point in the video and I’ll try to give a better answer

Great video. Can you playback all channels simultaneously? And can you record separate channels individually for composing music?
@TommysPianoCorner2 ай бұрын
What you appear to be describing is a DAW. The F6 can be used with one. Each channel on the F6 is an individual microphone and records into its own file. It can also be configured to combine multiple files into a single one. Most usually, we load the files produced into a DAW (eg GarageBand) and mix them together.
@DavidBerglund2 ай бұрын
@TommysPianoCorner I know what a computer and DAW is. I'll look for the manual if you can't answer the question
@TommysPianoCorner2 ай бұрын
@ what I’m trying to say is that you cannot synchronize tracks from within the F6. As such, unless all tracks were recorded simultaneously, playback of each would start from when you pressed record.

Very interesting! Spaced Repetition Systems are widely used for memorising information and I always advise my English learners to set up a Spaced Repetition System for learning vocabulary. I'd come across interleaved practice before too but I haven't used it quite as forensically as you have outlined here. With SRS, the idea is that for the things you can remember, you leave a wider time before revising them again; things you can't remember get less time between revisions. However, I have not tried this with piano learning, only vocabulary learning! You've given me something new to think about with my piano playing, thank you!
@TommysPianoCorner2 ай бұрын
Yes, I have also found it a helpful approach with language learning too. I think the more difficult we find something, the more forensic we need to get. This particular prelude has so much going on within it that it was as much about brain training as finger training (for me at least). Another interesting twist is to sometimes leave enough space that we ‘forget’ (at least on the surface) and need to ‘relearn’ . This I find especially helpful with problems I’m struggling to fix.

Thanks Tommy! What if I don't have a sostenuto pedal? How is it possible to hold the tied LH D flat?
@TommysPianoCorner2 ай бұрын
Without sostenuto, you can try partial pedaling. When we don’t fully release the pedal, it has the effect of sustaining lower notes whilst clearing the resonance from upper ones. How well this works will depend on your piano so experiment with it to see. However, I wouldn’t worry too much. Apparently Liszt wrote this piece before the sostenuto pedal was invented and so physically holding the note would not have been possible. Interestingly, I did read that he later wrote to Mr Steinway indicating that this ‘new pedal’ could be put to good effect in his Consolation.

Hey Tommy! Your hands do not look small at all.
@TommysPianoCorner2 ай бұрын
I guess everything is relative. My hands (ie size of palm) are not particularly small, however, my fingers are quite short. This makes anything beyond an octave haphazard as my fingers can’t reach that far. Equally if I play say a C octave with an E in the middle (to be played with 2), then this is extremely hard for me. It’s a reason why I don’t enjoy learning things like The Entertainer where this is a big feature. There are many people who might have quite slender hands but much longer finger for example who I’m sure have different challenges :-)

@@TommysPianoCorner thank you for the answer! I will look into the advertising claim as you call it in greater detail. The thing is that I have a Zoom iq6 mic with lightning connector and it worked perfectly well with a lightning connector IPhone. But after switching to IPhone 15 plus it does not work at all despite the fact that I used an apple usb c to lightning adapter. Hi there!Just a question: recently I recorded a video on my iPhone and tried to post it on Facebook but the sound was very much deteriorated, I mostly felt it was normalised automatically and the sound was much more metallic… has this happened to anyone here? How can I resolve this issue? I recorded a video with wav audio file and 44100 Hz. (On instagram there was no audio change, it remained exactly as I had recorded it). Thank you very much and well done again for your videos!
@TommysPianoCorner4 ай бұрын
This is a very interesting question. First, did you use the phone’s built in microphone or an external (e.g. Shure). Next, did you use the standard ‘camera’ app or something with more control. Finally, did you listen back through the iPhone’s built in speakers? I have noticed these are extremely unflattering to piano music. There will often be severe clipping that disappears with headphones. Go figure! Then start adding the processing of platforms such as KZbin or instagram and it becomes very difficult to work out what is going on.
