The centerboard caught me unaware on my "new" ('69) Oday17 Daysailer. I took her out several times and thought she sailed like crap, turns out the little pivot point was so rounded the raising/lowering handle wasn't doing anything. So I was sailing around without any centerboard. Explained so much. I have it(CB) in my kitchen at the moment with fiberglass resin curing on the repair. Next time the CB fails I think I will have to buy a new one.

I’m kind of puzzled. I had a old day 192. I sold that a few months ago and I purchased this day sailer 2. I noticed you mentioned I think on one of your videos that it did not have a backstay so I’m kind of confused. What hold up the boom? Any thoughts on that would be helpful. Thank you
@ I believe the episode I tagged is the one that mentioned no back stay on these small sailboats. They only have the side stays and forestay. So the mast is held down by those three supports and the tension applied to the mast base. Kind of like a bow and arrow at tension. Larger sailboats have a back stay (support wire/line from the top of the last to the back of the boat). It was odd Learning and trusting this but I also felt a little better knowing my main sheet can provide some support to prevent the mast from going forward, however it is not necessary due to the small sail area… I’m not a boat builder or marine architect but that’s what I learned preparing to install my running rigging.

My McVay 16 Falcon (1968) has a glassed floor, continuous with the seats, which does use up room because the interior is not as deep. I have a lot of foam in the bow, lightly glassed in. I don't want to take all of it out but eventually I have to cut way more ports into areas I cannot reach. You have a beautiful cruising ground & you can tell at the launch that the water is nice.
@solitudeandsailing3 ай бұрын
@@FlatlandMando the Falcon 16 looks very similar to the ODay Ospray also 16’. The foam helps with flotation should there be a capsize. I’ve seen some people remove old waterlogged foam and replace with the liquid kind. One guy filled his bench seats and ballast with pool noodles. I let the water drain out and plugged the drain holes. Will unplug when I haul out. Yes, Narragansett Bay is large enough and pretty much protected harbor providing for long hours of sailing. Weather permitting that is.
@FlatlandMando3 ай бұрын
At this point, although comments may say that you need new sails, etc., this is admittedly an older boat & an older design that was never set up to have a lot of sail shape adjustments & racing/ planing was not the purpose of these boats. My 16ft.McVay Falcon from 1968 has very similar lines & it never had a boom vang, though that control is very useful for flattening the sail upwind. I have launched my boat once only in Aug.2024, using a 55lb. thrust trolling motor, as my standing & running rigging are not quite ready. I launched on a hot day with no wind, so e- motoring was OK!
@solitudeandsailing3 ай бұрын
@@FlatlandMando good to know about the older sail. These are definitely ODay Ospray sails. Some folks point out the possible “stretch” in the sail. I’ve thought of lower the boom to tighten up the sail some more but then I’d be ducking too low for this “middle aged” guy. I did purchase hardware to install a boom vang. I also put in some electronics that will show on an up coming video. I added navigation lights, anchor light, cabin lights, bilge pump, phone charger and more! She’s coming along great. Just went sailing today!

We truly love the ocean, it's beauty and the feeling of peace and serenity when sailing. Something I think most folks take for granted..Anyway, while searching for a sailboat, I stumbled on your beautiful videos. I remember saying to myself, "Wow, he gets it" and obviously couldn't wait for your next sailing episode to arrive... In the interim and thanks to a little Divine Intervention. Well,We'll, wouldn't you know what kind of sailboat he was selling???? Yup, a 1973 Pearson 26. Talk about Divine Intervention, Wow... Yesterday evening my wife and I went for an introduction sail with my Godson, his wife and youngest daughter. It was as he would say, Epic.. What a beautiful time with them and his Pearson 26.
