Don’t know exactly what it is about this song, but it builds so beautifully to the crescendo at 4:50. Chills. This really was a wonderful backing band.

First Glimmer and "Things" are among his best solo works. A cool guy showing his vulnerability and romantic longing like few singers but Neil Young. Neil and Paul are the best songwriters for me, bar none. Sorry, Bob.

@@rcll9751 Thanks. For some reason when I heard 'Things , I thought the production was so good and the song blew me away. Had a lesser but similar feeling about 'First Glimmer.

I'm wondering if they could have put this entire unedited song on a 45 RPM record (9:47) as they did with RICHARD HARRIS ' "MACARTHUR PARK" (1968) at 7:20 or BOB DYLAN's "LIKE A ROLIING STONE" (1965) at 6:00 . I have to admit that record engineers had to do quite a lot of scrunching the grooves to make that happen . I also have to say that I am not especially fond of this edited version at 3:17 !

So glad you posted this! I’d read about it but didn’t realize that it had actually been distributed (on reel-to-reel tape) to radio stations across the country at the time. The Rock and Roll Geek Show podcast did an interview with Jon Scott, the record promo guy that got radio stations across the country to play the first Tom Petty album, eight months after most stations had passed on it, mistaking it as a punk rock album. This live version, broadcast over KWEST FM in LA, and the subsequent distribution nationwide was Scott’s idea.

It’s interesting I got this album when it came out, liked it like all the Replacements albums from before, but being free from the Mats he was able to be as irony free as possible, in the best way. All his solo stuff has his signature blend of caring but not in a maudlin way. Great blend of romantic memories with no schmaltz. It has aged really well too.
