Ironic that Joe defends John Wayne saying he's not a f*****, because Wayne called both of these characters that. Honestly, John Wayne was an awful man and time and time again he showed how out of touch he was in the New Hollywood era.

Barfly is truly an underrated film. A truly great film. I usually look down on Hollywood dramas because a lot of them feel contrived or like they play it safe. This film feels so natural, like I was getting an insight into the lives of both Rourke's and Dunaway's characters.

"JOHN WAYNE!! YOU'RE GONNA TELL ME HE'S A F*G!!!!" Ratso didn't answer Joe Buck's question but his silence and stare said it all. Sometimes you have to read between the lines to fully understand things 😉 John Wayne WAS a f**got... Contrary to a lot of his fan's beliefs 😊

2023.....I must have re-enacted the street scene,....."Hey, I'm walkin'' here!",....that Ratso yells at the car trying to run him over on the busy NYC, street,....like a 100 times in my own life, on streets all over the USA,.....( when some asshat, is trying to drive through the crosswalk)...and barely stops to let me walk. I invoke (my best impersonation) of a NYC accent,....and bang my fist on their car's hood. (check it out, its an iconic scene, from earlier in the movie).

She wastes half a cigarette and he wastes half a beer. Sure it is unrealistic but I'm guessing they didn't have the budget to retake the scene. It took them 7 years just to get green lit and funded and with these big names I'm guessing money was an issue.

Few other movies ever made truly captured the soul & essence of a true, die hard, impenetrably shameless, incorrigible alcoholic, yet one blessed with such amazing philosophical insight & poetic sensibilities (thus that additional, elevated character dimension!). Mickey Rourke nailed Bukowski's alter ego seamlessly & magnificently (&, seemingly, effortlessly!). Just a fantastic job, playing that alcoholic slob extraordinaire with a penchant for fisticuffs & perspicacious musings to absolute perfection, & in a fashion that was truly Oscar worthy. Back in the 80s Mickey Rourke was The King (& very worthy of that noble & immortal designation..."The Pope of Greenwich Village!")! My next beer will be in honor of that woefully underappreciated screen legend, that uber badass, that icon of super cool masculinity, of exceptional acting depth & talent, that booze guzzling connoisseur of copious consumption, that one man bare knuckle brawling juggernaut, of praise deserving, near superhuman resilience, that beast of oozing charisma & unimpeachable authenticity, Irish Heart, all-American Spirit, a maniac to greatly admire! Mickey you crazy, mythological motherfucker you😜😜😊
