I loved Hoffman's performance, but I actually thought Jon Voight was outstanding here. They both were, but Voight conveyed an innocence and naiveness that it's really hard to portray.

Emely, you got me thinking! Do you act? Your comment sounds as though you do- until I became of "an age" chose and it's a coin toss- chose Hoffman for his ability to make his pain, physical and emotional palpable but, I was young! Today under covid lockdown I will watch this gem again. I look at them now, babes in arms ! I wouldn't ever end up in pain - Ratso's poverty etc. I don't smoke but I have osteoporosis and other bad habits- I identify with his frustration at having little control over money, ill health- no coconuts for me, loathe HOT, HUMID, WEATHER, but innocence and line-free faces and that niggling feeling if regret - Dustin made me feel. I guess I looked at young, handsome, well scrubbed, Jon and thought, well he's more than halfway there to begin with! No, proverbial don't judge a book by the cover. Maybe I'll change my mind! New York City was one of the many pins on my globe- still is but I have lost hope....Namaste Z. Sorry for length, should read up doing a "precis or synopsis" ...

That line inspired that great bit in Repo Man; young Otto got beat up and a bunch of Repo men want to hunt them down, like John Wayne. “John a Wayne was f*g.” “The hell he was!!” “He was to, you boys. I installed two way mirrors in his pad in Brentwood and he come to the door inna dress,” “shit, that don’t mean he was a homo, Miller. Lot’s of straight guys like to watch their buddies fuck, I know I do. Don’t you?!” “ Fuck ya John Wayne! Now who did this to you ya little pussy”

I invoke (my best impersonation) of a NYC accent,....and bang my fist on their car's hood. (check it out, its an iconic scene, from earlier in the movie).

TheGodParticle that would be so much weaker than this ending--which was, in its way, a "happy" ending. Ratso was never going to get well, but he died next to the person who was probably the only real friend he'd ever had. Joe came to a new maturity and was ready to start a new life, on more adult terms. I found it a very satisfying ending, and making it all sugary sweet would have been a betrayal of the grittiness of the film.
