Nice. Have paddled 1000s of kms around Koh Phayam and Koh Chang since 2007. Best unknown yaking spot in SEA IMO. Have also paddled from Phayam to Satun a couple of times. Try it sometime if you haven't already. Great adventure.

I am unfamiliar with this kayak, but it looks to a good design. The seat seems to be a bit forward in the design, I wonder how that affects weathercocking. Remove the rear bulkhead so you can access the deeper space in front of it. Use inflated airbags to stabilize the gear and take up space.

As an Aquaglide kayak owner of the Navarro 145 and the Chelan 155, I can truly agree with you; Aquaglide is very durable and reliable. I got into fly-fishing a year ago; fishing rivers in waders. However, now I want to do some lake fishing - from a kayak. I am so tempted to get the Blackfoot 130, but I'm going to try it with the Navarro first and see how it works. The thing is, the newer Blackfoot kayaks have elevated (metal framed) seating, and from what I understand they are really comfortable. However, those seats are designed to fit the Blackfoot, and no other model. I purchased a couple of drop stich seat risers from Aquaglide; I'm going to see if that works. Otherwise, the Blackfoot is on my radar.

Appreciate your review. What is concerning from your review is that you report 3 episodes of leak or puncture in the Astraglide on 2 consecutive boats with one involving the dropstitch floor. I am looking at getting an inflatable kayak. When reviewing the high quality inflatables and seeing a report like yours (which is helplful) pushes me away from Astraglide Blackfoot and looking more towards other models like NRS Pike or Wilderness systems iATAK or innovative sportsman osprey. 3 leaks/punctures in 2 boats in 3 years is 3 too many. Again, thanks for the review.

I think it is important to remember where I used my kayak. It is true it died on me at last, but I am seriously impressed how well it hold up and for that long. Nothing glued holds up for more than max 2 years in this humid and hot environment. Expensive gore Tex shoes bought in Denmark lasted less than one year and they fell apart. If I ever go for an inflatable again, then I would not hesitate a second, Aquaglide just know how things are made durable.

Thank you for this. I saw your review of the Aquaglide Blackfoot! I think I'm pretty much sold on this 'yak, because I think it perfectly suits my situation: just retired, 66yo, don't want a heavy lift atop my Subaru, and use mostly for inshore fishing. No intention on getting technical. So, sounds perfect! Two questions for you: do you inflate the night before and load it into a roof carrier? And if so, how does that perform at highways speeds? Also, do you think it could manage an anchor? Thanks again!

I've found that the larger cuts of meat take MUCH longer to rehydrate. The size of your cuts, I put in a sealed bowl with cold water for a few hours. The dense foods are much slower to rehydrate. Also, raw foods cook much faster and are easily prone to overlooking, making them dry. I like to break the meats up dry into small bite-sized pieces, rehydrate, and make soups/stews/casseroles. It's what I do when camping and probably will do in a survival situation. It stretches the food further. Thanks for the video.

Thxs for your review. Was on the verge to buy a Atlantis 14 when I saw your video. Decided to go directly for the Emotion 505, whitout testing it. At almost 66, with only kanoe and recreational kayak experience, it was a bit of a gamble. As I will use it mainly for solo multi day eiland hoping trips, you have to be sure to be able to do self rescue. But after 2 weeks I will go along with you. It is an amazing fast boat and can make it easily 6 km/hr. Able to do selfrescue with the peddle float, but with 4 days of drinking water, food, and a load of gear, the boat will be heavy. In a week, I will test this out as well. When ok, I am off for 4 days of the grid. Also bought myself the portable barbeque you used on your trips. Can you tell me the location where you lounged the kayak for your Ko Payam trip? As with all the mangrove delta's it can take a long time to find a tide independent spot.

I agree, it is a fast and very stable boat. I get to use mine way too seldom though. At the Ranong trip we started off just south of Ranong city. Google Yummi Halal, and you will see a restaurant 50-60 meters from our departure spot. :-) I need to figure out how to move my kayak around Thailand safe and cheap. Got no car, and I really love to do that trip again, among others. Koh Chang by Cambodia with all its small islands are interesting as well.

3:53 These are fake characteristics! In fact, a good manufacturer would indicate a power of 5W for this panel - this is exactly the power that the solar cells used in this panel have in their maiden state, that is, when they are not cut and not laminated with a protective coating. Of course, you won’t be able to get that kind of power from the panel’s USB port. Most gadgets that require power supply voltage will be able to receive 2.5W power from this panel. This power is enough for slow charging of many smartphones. They will be charged from it at the same speed as from a USB 2.0 port on a computer, which also produces 2.5W power. Some modern smartphones may refuse to charge directly from this panel, and then you will have to charge the power bank from it, and then the smartphone from it. Some power banks capable of charging at a very low voltage will be able to get about 3.2W of power from this panel at a voltage of 4.2V. Such a socket, when used correctly (when it stands on the ground or other stationary surface all sunny day, correctly oriented towards the Sun and no shadow falls on it), will allow you to receive a current of approximately 6000mA on a cloudless summer day, part of which will then be lost when charging the gadget . If you plan to charge a power bank from the panel, and only then charge other gadgets from this power bank, then these other gadgets will ultimately only be able to receive about half of the specified amount of current, that is, to charge a smartphone with a 3000mA battery, you will first have to stand in one place spend 7 hours charging the power bank, and then some more time charging the smartphone from the power bank (for example, my smartphone takes 3.5 hours to charge from the power bank). One can only guess how much time then you will have to move along the trail...;) In cloudy weather, this socket will practically not work and you will have practically no reserve of electricity for this case, unless of course you take a separately charged power bank with you for such a case. Think about whether this is enough for you. Think carefully so you don't end up being disappointed and telling people that using a solar panel on a camping trip is a bad idea! Personally, I use the AllPowers 21W solar panel, which, weighing 475 grams, can actually output up to 13.5W of power through its USB ports. In practice, this means that in 7 hours of a cloudless summer day, this socket is capable of charging a 20,000mA power bank from 0% to 100%, and you still have time to recharge your smartphone from it. As a result, I will have not only a reserve of electricity for the next smartphone charge, but also a couple of more smartphone charges in case of cloudy weather. If I don’t need such a large amount of charge and only need to compensate for the charge in the power bank spent in the evening charging my smartphone, then an hour at a lunch stop will be enough for me, and in the morning, while I’m packing the tent and my things in the backpack and having breakfast, this socket will replenish the smartphone charge that he spent at night. If you think that a panel weighing 475 grams is too heavy and you don’t need a lot of electricity since you rarely use your gadgets, then in this case you can consider the option of the AllPowers 15W solar panel, which in my opinion is the smallest a panel that is worth taking and that can really provide you with electricity while camping; one person traveled with such a panel and a power bank which he charged from it for several months and during this time he did not have the need to charge from a regular power outlet.

I suggest you contact him. No matter what, then I would not suggest doing this trip alone, in particular in the rainy season. Fairly tricky at places, and if water is flowing fast in high volumes it is not for the inexperienced for sure.

Landing an inflatable kayak is one of the biggest risks to them. Gravel is extremely sharp, rocky beaches are not a good landing site, and old tar / cement ramps with decaying material can be very sharp. Even smooth boat ramps are not so great. If your not 100% sure your landing on very smooth sand, always get out first. A few inches of water on your feet is not a big deal. Even with very durable inflatable kayaks, I've come to the conclusion that it is best to not be afraid to get your feet wet, and get off the kayak before landing. This is a much safer way for your kayak. Hard shell kayaks can also puncture and that is a misconception people make. But the likelihood is far less. One time I saw a hard shell sink, and the guy said he hit a rock. And if you capsized on the water, an inflatable would be much more likely not to take on water and sink.
@BackonTrailasia
@BackonTrailasia Жыл бұрын
Agree, but as for sinking, if you have a kayak with compartments, then it is pretty bomb proof as well. My 505 has 3 sealed cmpatments, it makes it highly unlikely to ever sink. It is different obviously with recreational kayaks, often with no or very small compartments. I might add that my passion for the inflatable has faded a bit since this video. It was strong, it is portable, but as with everything else in this climate, it just does not hold up well. Straps came loose, glue undone, and more punctures. Too many things to fix. It is not to say I do not like or recommend inflatables, just not sure I would recommend it for Thai climate. Also glue in expensive phones disintegrate as the same goes for expensive goretex hiking shoes. I am in fact working on a packraft project. I am still a great fan of the portability.:-)
