Last time I saw Brendon we were 20 something and I was dj'ing a house party in Davis, he had some nice square toed dress shoes on and he came up to me to politely ask me to "play some real s#it" I knew what he meant but tried to shrug him off so he grabbed my shoulders and turned me face-to-face with him, so I would take him more seriously I presumed... No. Brendon was just positioning me for a frontal toe kick to the taint. Love that ninja --Cahl

Hi Karl, Thanks for watching and commenting. This is one of four pushes I taught in the seminar. I teach this push, “the Uproot” because Yang style Tai Chi in particular love this light pressure push or uproot. The goal is to move the other person, push them with a light touch and almost no pressure or strength. When it works people can travel a decent distance. The Tai Chi people love this because it adheres to the principle of deflecting a thousand pounds of force with four ounces of pressure. Being able to push someone is good, being able to push someone with light pressure and almost no strength applied is a much more difficult skill. If I push someone into traffic or another real hazard, then I win. In most cases though the other person simply walks back and starts punching again. So, it is not that fight winning move that knocks someone out in a match. In a ring etc. If you follow up as they land. Or if they land off balance and then you attack, you might seize the advantage. Otherwise, I prefer the other pushes that combine knee or ankle locks and knock the opponent to the ground hard. Not everything in martial arts needs to work in a ring fight. Sometimes people are being harassed and they need to escape and use a break grab or a push to create an opportunity without creating liability. Unfortunately, I am now too old to participate in those matches, back in the 1980s and 1990s I competed successfully in both forms and fighting tournaments throughout CA and many informal match ups. It was fun. But that was long before MMA matches. Modern MMA is impressive, and it is wonderful that the competitive opportunities and rules are so well developed. I wish we had them back in the 1980s and 90s; it would have been better.

I find the rumored accounts you have just described in this video regarding Master Gu Ruzhang's involvement with the army to be extremely suspect. Taijiquan would have been the very last thing he would have been asked to teach soldiers in the army. Simply because the skills to achieve genuine Taiji would take one a bare minimum of 10-20 years of full time training to have anything worthwhile for practical application related to combat. Heck there are thousands of Taiji practitioners in the world right now,. with at least 15 years of experience, who have studied under qualified masters, but who wouldn't be able to successfully defend themselves on the street let alone a battlefield. Bagua would have been slightly faster with more practical applications, but it still would have taken years just to Circle Walk correctly. Xingyi would have developed the strongest bodies in the fastest time out of the 3 internal styles which is why it was used to train armys, but again the internal engine development would have been slow going taking many years to develop. I believe that since the soldiers needed immediate combat skills and strong, healthy, bodies, that the obvious and perfect choice was the Northern Shaolin that Gu Ruzhang had as his own foundation in the martial arts, This would accomplish everything that the military leaders required him to teach the soldiers. Having Master Gu teach the army Taijiquan to quickly build up the strength/health of their bodies along with usable combat skills would be ridiculous. It would be like giving Yo-Yo Ma one week to train complete beginners on how to play the Cello and expecting them to be ready to play professionally for the NY Philharmonic orchestra at the end of the one week seminar.

Thank you for watching and commenting. Couple of thoughts in response. I agree Northern Shaolin would be perfect! Except it might be too strenuous. I, like you, seriously doubt there was any attempt to create experts in Tai Chi in a short period of time. Most likely they had a group of extremely weak and sickly guys who were mostly joining to avoid starvation or were forcibly conscripted. Only a few would probably have been fit and motivated volunteers. The most important thing would be to get them healthy enough to carry their own gear and survive the rigors of a serious military campaign. For many centuries unarmed combat training has been virtually irrelevant for massed combat between large armies. Training in unarmed combat skills was mainly done during initial training, boot camp, to build courage in raw recruits. The skills that are important were how to care for, properly wear, and use your basic weapons and gear. How to follow orders and perform organized combat maneuvers as a unit. How to fire your weapons and reload them swiftly. Etc. How to hold your spear while wearing a shield and thrust forcefully. So, I think his primary roll would be to motivate the troops and get them fit. If he taught basic infantry men combat skills, I speculate it would mostly how to avoid a bayonet thrust while unarmed. Good footwork and good balance skills. I think the officers would have better unarmed combat skills and these were beneficial for controlling and disciplining their own troops too. Currently, Tai Chi people rarely pursue any self defense training and I know of no one seriously training to fight competitively with Tai Chi. If people put in a few hours a day 2- 4 +, doing many partner drills including sparring, individual technique practice, the Ta Lu and San Shou partner forms. in addition to pushing hands, practical skills will develop quickly. It shouldn’t take 10 or 20 years. 3 - 5 should be enough. Plenty left to learn or master after that, but you can make a rapid progress with intense practical training. Especially when you might die if it doesn’t get real. Practicing only the Tai Chi solo form will never get one to practical skills even after 20 years. The Japanese, except for some the officers, wouldn’t have been samurai trained either. Probably better feed, equipped, and trained but unlikely to be skilled in unarmed combat. To be clear I have no evidence of any kind that would satisfy a proper historian. No written documents etc. only oral history. Fun to think about though.
