Well done video and explanation! Good to know that’s it’s not always a compression release valve broken internally.

I noticed you didn’t remove spark plug and put motor to top dead center? Is this common?

I have a jd la135 I inherited from a friend, it shuts off when it heats up. Any direction you can point me to? Replaced coils, carb, plugs, fuel pump, ....all safety switches are bypassed. I'm puzzled

Good job, ah ha , your funny, i am dealing with the same delema, retoring a unit that dropped a pushrod and bad fuel pump. I am going to see if i can use the cracked original tank, if not you gave me some ideas. Thanks, and the mower ready to sell "big red" looks great, nice work. .. John

Anyone have pics or info in the pre 83 (fuel tank under hood) bagger setup? I have the chute and lid, no bag and cant see how one would even attach. After 82 the tank moved to the back and uses a different/higher bagger assembly.

I'm fixing to do the same with my mower. I already have the seat switch bypassed so I can get off the tractor while it's running. The safety switches are just there to babysit the stupid people who have no common sense. It doesn't take much to bypass all those switches but tearing out all the wiring and starting over is so much simpler and cleaner.

Great, everything is clear, thank you. I have a question. On my ignition switch 5 the names of the terminals are M, C, B, L, G. To which of them should I connect the wire coming from the alternator to recharge the battery?

Thanks for the video. I replaced the head gasket and the engine wouldn't turn over. It would move a little then stop. Your video was simple to follow and was exactly the fix I needed. I must have had the valves adjusted wrong the first go around. I could barely spin it by hand. Thanks for the checks to do prior. I went through all them- battery, starter, compression movement (had the last after the adjustment). Yea, I had to take it apart twice but it starts now. That's all that matters. 👍🏻

This is the worst, most negligent tractor/mower video I have ever watched. You suggest removing the key switch and using a push button. You do not provide any wiring advice or instruction by the title of the video implies that you do this to bypass the start safety switches which under normal operation will prevent the engine from starting in an unsafe condition. And the video shows how you DIY rewired the PTO switch too, which also bypasses the safety kill circuit; that kills the engine should the mower tip over or the rider leaves the seat. You are opening yourself up to a negligence law suit as well as putting people's lives or health in jeopardy. If you don't know how to diagnose and repair a tractor/mower wiring properly, then you should learn or take it to a trained mechanic. But you should definitely not make videos where...should someone even less educated than yourself could be injured or killed should they follow your video advice...smh

Thanks for a good video on the easy way to adjust the valves. Two thing I’d like to add that may help 1. You need to adjust the valves before you can check to see if the compression release is working if the valves are out of adjustment you’ll never see that little movement. 2. Spend $10 and change the aluminum intake pushrod to the same steel rod as used in the exhaust . The aluminum rods wear at the guide and snap and the ends mushroom. It’s a great way to keep from having problems why Briggs using aluminum pushrod beyond me.

I bought this to use as my ignition switch on a 1963 Bolens 800 riding mower kzbin.infoUgkxaAnMgzTZ_djF6K1Kr3MGiW_XGUMfUP8n I repowered with a 13hp Predator engine. Worked great! On the back of this switch are 5 terminals labeled G, M, L, S, and B. The G was wired straight to ground, The S was wired from the back of the switch to my starter solenoid. The L is for any accessories, so I ran it from the L terminal to a rear light I have on the riding mower. M is for the coil, so I plugged the stock coil wire to this wire terminal. The B is for constant battery power, so this was wired to the positive battery cable. I turn the key, first click is the accessory position, and my rear light came on as expected. Turned the key all the way and Vroom...the engine started. Turn it back to the off position, and the engine turned off. Perfect! Hope this helps!

My tank was busted all around, I didn't have room for the battery under the seat without raising the seat. So I mounted an aluminum 2 gallon tank (they can be found by searching "aluminum hot hod gas tank" they're about a $100 bucks) behind the seat, I also ran a steel gas line all the way to the pump. The external tank might look weird, but it's much safer, and the steel gas line is better than the rubber that ran very close to the belts.
