My protector still reads 86% humidity not 84% and I only have one packet inside. Is this within an acceptable range despite not being 84%?

86% is perfect! It’s very close indeed to 84!

This tool is amazing! I used it on a previously unplayable reed that was way too easy and made terrible noises on the low notes. The reed now plays SO well I actually can't believe it's me playing when I hear it. Thank you Jori for your creation.

Thanks! I'm so glad The Piper’s Ultimate Reed Poker is working so well for you. As I say in the video, sometimes the very BEST sounding reed is one that has been played for a while and then gets too easy and then gets a poke! Better than new even... Happy Piping!

I've got something very similar, when I bought the 'Chanter Reed Adjustment Kit' from Chris Apps Reeds, more than 15 years ago, when I visited Chris when he lived in Essex, UK, before he left to live in the States. It's called a mandrel.
@piperdude4 жыл бұрын
piperbob2 Thanks for commenting. The Apps mandrel is completely different. It’s blunt and short and requires twisting. It’s very hard to control how much the reed is affected. With the Pipers Ultimate Reed Poker has a completely different design: a round, tapered tip which allows you to perfectly control the amount you poke the reed. It’s totally intuitive and easy to use.

Received my Tone Protector a few months back. Currently 87% at 76 degrees, can't complain. I do think it will help in preserving my reeds. However the general problem with living in the South is the heat combined with the humidity. Played at a large gathering last Friday, the Pipes sounded awesome during the first three or four stanzas, but, the room I was playing in was air conditioned, cold and as I kept breathing in the cold air my chanter reed became less sensitive to my gracings, owing I suppose to the cold impacting it restricting the reed. Was wondering if there was anything other Pipers have used maybe in their bag to curb this?
@RebbePiper5 жыл бұрын
I have on occasion been asked to Pipe from an outside point to an interior point within an air conditioned room. My worst case scenario is having all four (drones and chanter) going ballistic when I enter an air conditioned room. I recently played at a memorial, in an interior room where the room was full of people and the AC was kicking. I became concerned with my chanter reed going sharp, which it did. I got through the tune without a lot of gracing's and fortunately it sounded OK, but not great. The outside weather in the south is notorious for extremes in temperature and extremes in humidity. It is not uncommon during some seasons, that the temp will go from 57 to 75 within a few hours, and pipes have to be re-tuned. Would this work, say in an air conditioned room? Even if the Pipes were stationary an hour before playing?

Yes! Your pipes will sound better and will stay in turn much better if you have stabilized the moisture level in the reeds. The tuning will be greatly enhanced if you can keep your reed from getting overly dry in between playing sessions. It works !

Our band just bought many tone protectors but we don't seem to be able to get our humidity above 75%. I have tried both packages that came with it but still nothing above 75%.Anyone any ideas?
@piperdude5 жыл бұрын
The best thing to do is make sure you are using two of the humidity packs. This time of year it might take a few days to get toe humidity level up to the desired level, especially if the reeds are dry and the hemp is dry.

Strathspey version of "Caber Feidh" with the out of tune low G [minor 7th below the keynote] to make the bottom hand bubbly ornaments stand out. The craft's, not the excellent piper's fault.Lovely half dotted 1st reel.I learned a number of reels personally from Duncan Johnstone and I suspect he'd have enjoyed this presentation.
