Your last point (and all of them)is so true. The loss of our pets is the absolute worst! When my father passed, he had lived a long life, so I wasn't phased at all (plus, to be honest, I wasn't close with him at all). I'm still mourning for pets I had decades ago! Also, I've never used a clicker or treats for training. Just good ol' positive reinforcement.

Isn’t cranberry really bad for dogs that it can kill them
@vonLotta2 күн бұрын
Cranberries are safe for dogs in small quantities. They are a great source of antioxidants and good for urinary tract health.

cnt express hw much do i agree with u. i think u make complete sense, nd which also shows that u truly care fr ur dogs. i do most of the things u said, nd everyone tells me i m being too sensitive while i think this is the right way to raise a dog. i wud like to add a couple things also. 1) make a small dog pack if u cud by involving other owners in ur neighborhood or simply let ur dog interact nd play with other street dogs while on walk. obviously, u hv to b careful abt it, esp in start or breeding season, to judge the possibility of a negative interaction or a fight nd local laws, bt it really adds meaning to their lives when they cn interact with member of their own species. otherwise its like not letting ur children interact with other children. its nt good fr their mental nd physical health. 2)try n give them off leash time during walks bt again check local laws. 3) using soaps nd shampoos made fr dogs, otherwise human soaps etc hv a strong smell nt thus it irritates them. 4) cleaning their paws regularly nd also ears esp if they hv floppy ears. 5) changing their food every nw nd then. 6) changing their walking routs every nw n then. 7) look fr their psychological needs as well, as nt waking them up during their deep sleep, judging if they want to b left alone or wants to interact, having atleast 2 dogs so they always hv company, nt shouting at them, bringing new toys etc

Hi, I just tried this recipe with my dogs and they enjoyed it. But it gave them diarrhea. I’m guessing it will take some time to adjust? They were on kibble all these days. Or should I do half n half ? Pls lmk thanks
@vonLotta3 күн бұрын
Sorry to hear that! Sometimes it takes a few days to adjust, because the enzymes necessary for digesting the real food can be "asleep" after eating dry food for a while. I would recommend reducing the amount of food for a couple of days, adding a hard boiled egg once a day, and adding some canned pumpkin (1 tsp/10 lbs. of body weight). If things don't improve in 3-4 days, discontinue the homemade food, let a couple of weeks pass, and try again, or try mixing it into dry food little by little for week or so. I hope this works, it's a very worthy thing you're doing! 💖

@CCOREY52 күн бұрын
Of course… but the cost of feeding large dogs completely raw is enormous. Now the cost of chicken and eggs is going up because of the bird flu. My 2 GSDs need 2.5 pounds of meat each, organs and bone, per day. Currently where I live the average cost of an inexpensive beef cut is $5.99 and chicken is $3.99. Heart and liver is around 4.99. Yes it depends on where you live too, but it still won’t be easy. That’s why we add veggies and things like sweet potatoes, oats or buckwheat. Dogs are scavengers and handle it well.

Hi ! Very good video and helpful info. I have a question, what can I do if my dog is already an adult?
@vonLotta7 күн бұрын
Great question! I would still play the Hide and seek and running off for a fast recall games, to strengthen the connection, and to show or reinforce that running towards your voice is a great fun. But I would not let them off leash in a park, if your recall is not on point yet. I'd recommend working with a trainer, because adult dogs are so different, and it's important to see the dog's behavior to know how to help.

It’s refreshing to hear from a dog enthusiast who has a clear understanding of what a dog is and what a relationship with a dog should be. I have been involved in Schutzhund training all of my adult life. It’s a passion that long ago pulled me in and informed my outlook on so many things. I congratulate you on coming to this understanding of your canine companions.

How do you calculate how much of this recipe to feed your dog? Is there a difference based on if they are still growing or full grown?
@vonLotta9 күн бұрын
For adults, it is recommended to start with 1 cup of homemade food per 10 lbs. of dog's body weight. And then monitor their weight and adjust accordingly. It's trickier with puppies. I have to constantly tweak the amount because they grow so fast. Also we need to remember to be careful with Calcium for puppies - their needs for Calcium are higher than that of the adults.
@taniaholzermaneso64879 күн бұрын
Is that based on feeding once or twice a day?
@vonLotta9 күн бұрын
@@taniaholzermaneso6487 The 1 cup/10 lbs. amount is per day. So if you have a 20 lbs. adult dog, you could feed her 2 cups once a day, or 1 cup twice a day.

@Kp263029 күн бұрын
@vonLotta i saw this video. Do you prefer normal slicker brush for regular grooming? Do you prefer any other for show grooming?
@vonLotta9 күн бұрын
Sorry, I just realized that. 😊 I prefer the slicker brush, as it seems to catch the loose undercoat the best. Both for every-day grooming, and for show prep. The Furminator type brushes can cut the outer coat and make the GSD fur look dull. Gotta be careful with those. I will be making a video on brush comparisons as well.

We learned the same thing about vets and don't blindly trust all their recommendations any longer. In the current business model of big Vet corporations, they push lots and lots of tests and expensive diagnostics. With one illness, there were two possible diagnosis. One required a $5,000 MRI and would require neurologic surgery. The other diagnosis was a possible ear infection requiring a $120 medicine. We treated for the ear infection and the problem resolved on its own.

What canines eat in the wilderness? Carrots? Spinach? Rice? Pumpkins? No. Just animals: meat, bones and internal organs. So, I doubt that plant food is beneficial for their health, but it is added in the dog food to keep the cost down.
@CeriLong9 күн бұрын
My understanding is that when they eat a prey animal, they often eat the stomach contents too. It provides fiber and bulk to help their digestion. They will also eat grass for similar reasons. They will also eat things like berries etc occasionally. So while I agree that the majority of their diet is definitely meat and offal, some plant matter is normal and helpful. We just have the advantage of providing them with better tasting and more nutritious ones!
@CCOREY58 күн бұрын
Yeah it’s to keep the cost down. Same with raw feeding or cooking for your dog. When you have several German Shepherds that eat around 2 to 2.5 pounds of meat (+organs and bone) per day…rarely can people afford that. So yes, I mix in vegetables to stretch it., and sometimes buckwheat and oats. Dogs are no longer 100% wolf like, they can digest a certain amount of carbs (steamed, cooked or blended up). I have two GSDs and it costs a fortune to feed 100% raw.
