Great you killed one, there's still a billion out there. Really they aren't that bad, it's that native tree frogs find it hard to live in suburbs so the cuban frogs take their place (their tadpoles develop quicker and are cannibals so they have an advantage in that environment). In the wild the Florida tree frogs are still more numerous.

~IF~ You have to kill a tree frog, the most humane way is with benzocaine (WITHOUT antiseptic or alcohol) Higher doses are better but 20% seems to be the most reliable. Rub it on their back and body, and it will die within a few minutes. They will absorb it through their skin, numbing everything until they overdose causing organ, heart, and brain failure. Freezing can be quite prolonged and take days to complete depending on species and their abilities to go into diapause.

A vital step was missed. Someone else mentioned it. A strip of Orajel on the back. wait 15 minutes and it will be euthanized. then the bag followed by 72 hours in the freezer. For those griping. these guys are pests. they're bigger than native frogs, they eat the native frogs, they have no natural predators, the creatures that Do eat the Cubans have stunted growth, Cubans cause plumbing and electrical problems, their toxin is a skin wirritant, and if you have asthma they can cause an asthma attack. they're really bad for the ecosystem. I've seen 1 native frog and 1 native toad in 10 years here. I've found 30 cubans. It is illegal to release Cubans. Floridians are required to keep them in captivity or kill them. That was not a gray tree frog. One tell tale sign is the lack of yellow on the back legs. Their heads are shorter than Cubans. Their bodies are chubbier. Cubans are long and thin. Circus are considerably smaller-about half the size of cubans at 1.5. 2". Cubans are 3.5-4"

Ok I’m gonna be real here. I’m a wildlife biology major here in Florida. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING! I appreciate the concern you have but not all invasive species are bad. These frogs actually help the far worse issue of mosquito overpopulation here. The other frogs here are doing fine even with this competition. Thats what happens in nature anyway, raccoons and opossums do the same thing. The invasive frogs that are actual problems are cane toads. If you see those call wildlife services because they are very poisonous.

So how are you going to tell me that the native tree frogs here are doing fine? The articles that you will find in the links I provided are a few of many. @@yakyappers I get what your talking about but these things usually get stable in time. The populations of native populations have gone down, but that’s mostly due to climate change and deforestation. Extra competition does make it more difficult, but on top of the benefits the species can do, it’s also just immoral. Throwing a frog that had no say in being here in a freezer to kill it, when there are far more concerning invasive species to worry about just feels wrong. Sorry if i came off a bit harsh in the original comment. I am an animal lover, so watching animals being killed for something beyond there control just makes me sad. I appreciate the care though. Most people i see here don’t really seem to care, about this sort of thing. Or at least not openly.

@@etsap1236 I'm sorry you feel that way, however, we have no evidence that cuban tree frogs are helping Florida's ecosystems in any way. They grow faster than native frogs, reproduce earlier in the season, and will eat anything they can. They're rapidly spreading through Florida, outcompeting and consuming all native frogs in the region. A recent geological survey in 2018 found that a population had made its way to Louisiana, with several hundred being caught, while not a single native frog was found within their radius. These frogs are not going to be "stable" with any amount of time if we don't control them. Some invasive species can become naturalized over time, but these frogs don't have that capability. As an evolutionary biologist and conservationist, it's my strong opinion, and the opinion of countless other ecologists, that the best we can do it remove them and humanly euthanize them through means of freezing. I know you don't want to see animals getting hurt or killed, but a single frog will hurt and kill far more native animals if we leave it alone. There's no getting past that. Despite their ability to damage non-native ecosystems, we should be treating them with respect as they're removed. It's like what David Lodge, an ecologist and conservationist, often said before us: "Invasive species aren't inherently evil, they're just in the wrong place".

@@odins.outlaw0711 Yeah but many trees have been destroyed in the last decade due to really bad hurricanes. I can still see the wall of snapped tree on the highway from hurricane Micheal. Also just cause there is more trees now compared to then Dosnt mean there isn’t still deforestation. Many natives before the European settlers got here would burn forests down to chase the animals out and into a trap.

Not really the most humane way, but definitely the least violent way. The most humane way would be destroying its brain with a blunt object or projectile. Humane death is quick death, which unfortunately is sometimes gruesome. Glad i dont have to dispath invasive species in my region, as we dont have problems with that, just invasive plants and insects.

@@JakeyBro69 they typically dont notice very slow gradual temperature change, but being taken from outside and thrown in freezer is painful, imagine feeling your blood crystallize. There was an experiment done with frogs, not sure which species, in which a frog was placed in boiling water and it instantly jumped out. Another frog was put in room temperature water, and it was very slowly heated. The frog didn't notice and got cooked alive. As cold blooded animals, they rely on external temperature to moderate their body heat, so they will move to another place to warm up or cool down. They notice temperature changes. The boiling frog experiment conducted by several different people yeilded different results based on how slowly the water was heated.
