Well meaning parents also give their kids vegetable peelers for carving wood. Crazy. It’s better to teach real skills and safe use of proper sharp knives with kids - who rise to the occasion wonderfully, with encouragement and coaching. I would suggest you watch our “Introduction to Whittling Skills” video. If you watch it first, you’ll find that helpful. Then get the knives and wood and watch it with your child, and work through it with them. Wonderful.

You are talking about no.151 Spokeshave blade here, but this is a post about the No.80 Cabinet Scraper. When I bought my No80 in the mid-1980s, the factory blade had one end squared and one end at 45degrees. These need to have a burr rolled on them like a one-sided cabinet scraper. The 45degree one, the burr is rolled away from the angle. It is quick and easy. The square end has. Burr rolled like a standard cabinet scraper. So the “hook” of the burr acts like a fine plane. The trick is in setting the blade, and then in the fine adjustment.

Hello, I just purchased the same vintage spokeshave and discovered that one of the tangs are cracked off! is there a way of repairing and or welding it back onto the blade? ... please let me know. Thank you, dee

I am sorry, but I have no idea how you would repair the blade if you have no way of welding or braising it. Distortion through the heat may be an issue too. It’s a shame!

Great to see a video about carving spoons from seasoned wood. Accessing green wood is not always easy. How often do you stop and sharpen up?
@thejoyofwood
@thejoyofwood 6 ай бұрын
I tend to sharpen in an “as needed “ basis. Some woods will be tougher than others. Some woods have silica in them! These will wear the tool edges faster. Hence I do it as I feel the tools are losing their edge. Making stools from recycled hardwoods give you access to an amazing array of Timbers for free. I often break up old furniture to make spoons.😁

My first spoon looks a lot like that. Didn't have an axe. Didn't have a hook knife. Used a lot of p40 sandpaper. Did a lot of things that would have got me pernanently ostracized from the International Spoon Making Community. Didn't use my teeth at any stage but that was because I didn't think of it...

What do you think is the youngest age you can start children whittling?
@thejoyofwood
@thejoyofwood 8 ай бұрын
That depends on their degree of dexterity. I have done it with 4 year olds, while some 6 year olds have struggled. The key is to provide one-on-one coaching and encouragement, while teaching safe and efficient techniques. Never leave a very young kid alone with a Sloyd knife if they have not previously demonstrated competency and understanding. So the answer to your question is: it all depends. 🤣

Gidday, Android Kenobi! It depends on the function of the spoon. We make lost of spoons and we use them too. In my kitchen I have half a dozen different cooking spoons, all of which are used. Then there are serving spoons, coffee scoops (or in my case, Tea Caddy Scoops), then there are eating spoons. Fun to eat with too. I would encourage you to read this blog post I did a few years ago: www.thejoyofwood.com.au/wood-recycling/spoons-spoons-spoons-do-we-really-need-more-spoons/ I hope this helps answer your question.
