Hello, I just purchased the same vintage spokeshave and discovered that one of the tangs are cracked off! is there a way of repairing and or welding it back onto the blade? ... please let me know. Thank you, dee

I am sorry, but I have no idea how you would repair the blade if you have no way of welding or braising it. Distortion through the heat may be an issue too. It’s a shame!

The No.51A (flat sole) is the best for shaping the outside (back) of the spoon bowl, and also the handle. The No.51AR (round sole) can be great for shaping the neck. A Sloyd knife can do this too, so if it was down to one spokeshave for spoon carving, I would go with the No.51 A. Check out the Seasoned Wood Spoon Carving video on this channel, and you will see a spokeshave in use. I hope this helps, Susan!

what angle is the blade on all these spokeshaves set at ? --45 degrees ? or less ?

Same as chisels and planes- grind at 25 degrees, hone at 30 degrees.

Rodrigo, 1. do you mean the No55 Spokeshave? the curved blade in the curved base - great for rounding anything with a radius less than the curcature of the base. We love them for smoothing further legs we have shaped with a drawknife. Tricky to sharpen and to set the blade, but awesome when they are wokring right! Worth the effort. 2. Or do you mean the No.51AR Spokeshave? The curved base with the straight blade. Great for shaving inside curves, where the radius of the curve in the wood is greater than the radius of the plane's sole. A bit trickier to use on the flat than the No.51/51A (with their flat bases) , however fantastic once you get the hang of it for shaving inside curves. I hope these help! Kind regards, Greg.

Ok thankyou ---however I measured the angle of a neighbours STANLEY 151 spokeshave --it appears to be 45 degrees ? --Is this correct ?
