OG Goth here - I saw all the original bands when I was a teen in the early to mid 80s. I am up to date on Goth bands up to around the early 2000s, but haven’t been looking hard for newer bands lately. This is a great list. I’m going to dive into some of these newer ones (I just made a giant playlist), and come back to look at the comments, too.

@eclecticism-uk how about the modern dark electro bands like Boy Harsher, Lebanon Hanover? Oraybe you've done and I just haven't come across it yet (just discovered your channel). Thanks for replying.

I recommend Play Dead (the First Flower and From The Promised Land), The Passions, Modern Eon, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Theatre Of Hate, Crispy Ambulance, Southern Death Cult, and early Parade Ground falls under post-punk and their later 1980's stuff combined post-punk with EBM. Parade Ground around 1988-89 sounded like Echo & The Bunnymen meets Front 242.

Great video and really well researched. Will be giving some of these a listen, particularly The Sound. I can appreciate the early days for the influence and tailwinds, but generally like those bands/projects who were influenced by them, sometimes more than 2 generations distant. Another band that contributed early on, but ended up going in different directions, was The Cult / Southern Death Cult. They had a lot of influence on both the postpunk and big arena rock phenomena.

Thanks for this list. Definitely agree with Boy Harsher at #1, just an amazing band over all. Also love Twins Tribes, Molchat Dolma, Vision Video, & Kaelan Mikla. I'm a little surprised that neither Lebanon Hanover nor She Past Away were on here as they seem to be two of the bigger modern goth bands, but I do think they both formed in 2012 so maybe they just miss your cut-off date. Creeper I had never heard of, but they sounded good in the clip so definitely gonna go check them out.
@eclecticism-uk3 күн бұрын
Yep, both were bands that were immediately on the list... but then I decided to make the cut off a bit later since I didn't want to spend too much time going through bands I see as the most popular of the modern ones. People have really been enjoying these goth videos, so I could definitely see doing a "getting into modern goth" video that covers the two of them, and some of the others that have been around a bit too long for this one!
@timothymaroney44972 күн бұрын
@@eclecticism-uk For me personally, Gothic-Rock has always been my favorite genre. Beyond that though, it legitimately feels like the genre is experiencing somewhat of a revival. The Cure's new album "Songs from the Lost World" is easily their darkest album since Disintegration, maybe even Pornography, and it spent most of November at #1 on the Billboard charts. A number of bands you listed here also managed to get on the lower tiers of the charts, a major accomplishment for a non-mainstream genre in general.

Another rabbit hole would be American 80’s experimental electronic underground music, such as the Nightcrawlers. A lot of the artists only recorded on tapes, and they were prolific. Awesome stuff that you can find on KZbin. Cheers!

That would definitely be a fun topic, and it's not totally new to me, although I wouldn't call my knowledge very in depth. Actually, I covered some dark jazz in the "Halloween Ambient" video, but I think only a couple albums, since that one went through a few very different genres. And somehow I forgot to include Bohren and der Club of Gore in that one, who I'd definitely meant to include! Are there others you'd recommend trying out?

Thanks so much for all the great comments and recommendations! Obviously, no list of 10 underrated post-punk bands will even cover the really, really good ones, and I have every intention of doing a "Part II"... not right away, but in a bit! When I watch this one, I remember how sick I was while writing, recording, and editing it, and I see all the spots I could've made better, so I appreciate the positive feedback it's gotten. Usually, I use this spot to mention any corrections to the content. I wish I'd mentioned Neue Deutsche Welle when I brought up Fehlfarben, since they were certainly part of a German wave that was sonically connected to post-punk but had its own identity as well. That's the only correction so far. Also, for those of you who don't think of U2 as a post-punk band... go listen to "Boy" and "October". I'm not sharing a hot take, this is a fact!
@planestranger6 күн бұрын
How the hell U2 are post-punk? They are as pop as it gets before you turn into Madonna and their sound is as light as late disco.
@eclecticism-uk6 күн бұрын
First off, post-punk and pop aren't mutually exclusive. Echo and the Bunnymen had many hits, and U2's early sound was definitely influenced by them. Have you heard any U2's first three albums? They're solid post-punk, even if Bono's performances always gave them a sort of 'anthemic' sound. And their guitar sound has been influenced by post-punk even as they've moved further and further into the mainstream. And lastly, on the subject of Madonna, she started her career singing in a punk band... just a random fun fact :)

Glad to see the Chameleons on this list! Was a big fan in the 80s, but was then bewildered by the fact that I seemed to be the only one who knew about them. Saw them last year in Ardmore, PA: I was absolutely ecstatic to hear them live and they did not disappoint!

Check out the Shop Assistants. They were a punk band but perhaps 5 years too late. Their lead singer sadly died and only 10 years later did the music world find out. Safety Net and Somewhere in China are 2 great singles. Another great band was the Young Marble Giants - very distinctive sound.

Late 80's thru early 90's Nashville band "Jet Black Factory" was one of my favorite local bands back in the day. The 80's/ early 90's Nashville non-country music scene was great.
