Thanks so much for all the comments on this one, it's been awesome hearing what some of your other favourite punk bands are, so please continue sharing recs below! A couple corrections to the content that have been pointed out by viewers: The band at 1:26 is another UK oi band, Crown Court, not The Chisel. The KZbin channel I referred to as "hate six" in the video is spelled Hate5Six and is in fact pronounced "hate five six." And according to another deleted comment, these aren't in fact punk bands, but radical lefties who eat babies or something. Just thought you should know.

The Japanese punk scene is very alive. Diving on to the Japanese rock scene remotely from Sweden I found more and more First I wanna shout out to Shonen Knife. Playing early poppunk för over 40 years is legendary. Maybe Junky58% will take over the heritage? They have something they call Scandicore over there. Hard to define but Swedish names like Framtid and Frigöra is may e the founders and very hard to find their music. Rocky and the Sweden, Axe Helvete and Slang ( Släng ) is another bands. And of course you must check out The Erections. And there is so much more punk from Japan to explore. These bands is just popped up in my brain.

I would triple down on Soft Play. I think the name change was brilliant. Just like the Dayglos and the Feederz tried to get a rise out of uptight dads, they chose the name to piss off the over serious "tough guys" and all across the net the "tough guys" rose to the bait like a brook trout. It was magnificently punk, a double down joke the victim has to participate in to make it really funny.

Mannequin Pussy is this summer’s top band though. *fun fact - Kurt & Dave Grohl were evicted from their shared house apartment rental, only to find their belongings on the street corner upon returning from tour a few weeks after Nevermind was released. This was due in part to The Dwarves being the only band in history to ink a seven-figure deal with Sub•Pop Records for Blood, Guts, & Pussy

I live in South East Asia and there is quite an unknown scene happening over here. There is a band 9xactly from Saigon that has the sound attutude and stage presence of a hardcore punk band from the 80s. Rebel Riot are a punk band whose members have disbanded due to actual political strife happening in the country. In Malaysia and Indonesia they put on punk shows on islands in remote areas due to licensing issues and permits in the country. Punk rock went mainstream in the 90s but great bands like The Descendents finally got their due and blew up. Its a genre that is diverse in nature and ever changing. Punk is the music of outsiders and those who think outside the box it was the birth of grindcore and noise as well. It has progressed beyond just a carbon copy of itself especially abroad.

Great video, these are all bands that deserve more attention. But, do one on bands that are actually new, not 5-15 years old.
@eclecticism-ukАй бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I think the main problem is that I'm so obsessed with albums.... Usually I don't pay much attention to a band until they have at least a first album out, although a really good EP can sometimes catch my attention. And I've seen so many bands make one good album and then fall off immediately, so maybe I'm jaded about expecting a lot from a band really early in their career. But, to continue my long reply to your quick comment, when I do a follow-up to this video, I'm planning to highlight some bands with just a really strong first EP, although that won't be all the bands I go over.

Very interesting list. I'm a tremendous fan of The Chisel and have enjoyed Petrol Girls a lot, but never gotten into the others much. I'd recommend Sick Thoughts as truly punk (versus the hardcore leanings of most of this list) and Militarie Gun as bands I think could be considered for this sort of list as well. Either way, dig this for sure! Punx not dead!
@eclecticism-ukАй бұрын
Thanks for the recs! I hadn't heard either, but I'm listening to Sick Thoughts and really enjoying them. Some definite Ramones vibes, very oldschool garage punk

As a 55 yr old growing up with 80’s punk it makes me so glad that there are still pissed off youth making ass kicking music. And Amyl…one of the best live shows I’ve ever been to.
@eclecticism-ukАй бұрын
I can't wait to get a chance to see them! Haha, my gateway band into punk was Green Day, but I quickly started learning more about the 70's and 80's bands. There's so much to explore, even without trying to keep up with new stuff, which is a good problem to have.

Banshimoku's two albums in '22 is some of the most fun punk in a good long time. A three piece band with the distinct and almost cartoon voice of Chiga Shion. Ball & Cube with Vegetable , 芸術は大爆発だ!, MAZUUTAGUTTEKAKARE, and just about every song on those albums are just pure punk fun.

Great video, some really good suggestions for new bands to try. I found the explanation of 'Oi' to be spot-on too. The only thing I didn't like was the pronunciation of 'Sparrer' which should be like Sparrow in a London accent
@eclecticism-ukАй бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Haha, after about a year and a half in the UK, I don't know if my accent has started evolving at all, although I've picked up a lot of Britishisms in my vocabulary (bin, hoover, quid, cheers)
@RevSticklebackАй бұрын
Pretty much everyone in the USA pronounces it wrong. I think the assumption there is that it's to do with sparring, as in someone who spars.

So great to see Amyl and the Sniffers included - Australia represent! It's always nice to hear Australian singers embrace their accent. They released their Comfort to Me album during the lock down in Melbourne so they did their release with no audience on a pier, but fuck it rocks. If you like em checkout the live release/performance of Comfort to Me. Also recommend Viagra Boys, their vocalist did a duet with Amy from Amyl & the Sniffers and I can't stop listening to it!

Punk has never died out in the slightest…I think people who don’t know the genre or can’t define it, just assume it’s not around because it’s not in the charts all the time..I’ve been into punk rock since I was a teen, now I’m in my 40s, and I’ve been continuously discovering bands that I would class as punk rock the entire time
@eclecticism-ukАй бұрын
Very true. And if you are open to things that fall into the descended genres like post-hardcore and post-punk, the sounds of punk are always evolving in new ways too. Lots of great traditionalists and innovators if you're paying attention!

Thanks for the rec, and welcome to punk! I listen to a lot of genres, but punk's usually my favourite. I'll have a few more punk videos coming up in the near future, so hopefully they help with finding some more good punk bands you haven't come across yet!
@joeldobbs7396Ай бұрын
THANK YOU!!! This had great timing, and your choices will probably have an effect on someone's life long taste in music. Not me, although these bands are now all getting on my playlists. My 9yo son has been into punk for almost a year now, and it will be nice to introduce him to some bands he might be able to see play. Right now he likes SNFU, Bad Religion, and early AC/DC. We sometimes ride around with a distressingly loud DIY bluetooth speaker mounted on his bikes rat trap, blasting punk or singing Big Balls. Flying the flag and annoying the civilians. Eventially he will start finding his own bands, and some of it I will think sounds like crap, but for now I am enjoying playing the older brother, introducing him to bands, buying patches for his jacket, buying jackets after his mother throws out the one we put patches on, showing him how to spike his hair with egg whites ans kool ade....good times....almost makes up for the 3 years of screaming, vomit, feces, and broken stuff that is early childhood, almost.
@eclecticism-ukАй бұрын
That's awesome to hear! I can imagine that giving you a renewed excitement about the music, too, since it's always more fun when you can share new bands you're into with someone you care about. If you haven't stumbled across it yet, you and your son may want to check out the KZbin channel 'little punk people.' The kid on the channel talks about his love of music, and has interviewed a ton of punk and metal musicians. And he was very young in the earlier videos, probably only a few years older than your son. Enjoy, and I'll be posting more videos about current bands--and scenes from the past too--so you might find some more good bands to explore together on here :)

The chats (as every commenter in here has said) are also a fantastic and fun band. Whole lotta antics and 4 awesome albums. I’d also recommend the dead pioneers, a native American lead punk band that gets pretty political and made me really think. They’ve got one album and it’s awesome. Idles are great too, but they’re more post punk and a lil older. The Viagra boys are also a fantastic punk and post punk outfit, super creative and always keeping me engaged. Private function, pist idiots, and boing boing are also great aus punk outfits. DETHRONED is an easy German hardcore band with a serious attitude and some killer breakdowns. Their EP primal instinct is the detention of stank face. Restraining order and civic are two great modern bands that really do a good job at emulating that early 80’s socal and Bay Area punk scene, I see a lot of black flag, germs, and circle jerks in them. And lastly gotta give that local band shoutout, go check out diskount vodka for some super energetic punk, they’ve got a great DIY aesthetic and kinda have some Amyl and the Sniffers vibes. Also this is a fantastic vid, your list was peak. So many great modern punk bands are out there today!

Something I witnessed in Japan blew my tiny English Brain. I flew to Japan in 2023 to follow Band-Maid on tour for a few weeks (Hard rock/punk/metal). At one point I got to Sapporo the day before the Maids were to play and went to check out where the venue was. When I got there a punk band was loading in. I decided to buy a ticket. The Band-Maid shows were (as usual) about 85-90% males with an average age of at least 50. This punk gig (two all male bands playing - one was called Tendouji) the audience was about 75-80% female with an average age of about 18. Yes, a huge portion of the crowd were under 18 young females. Many attending on their own. Some in large 'gangs' lol! The girl in front of me was 13 if she was a day. The crowd went totally nuts. One band was crowd surfing on wooden boards about the size of two doors while playing a song. There was a bar and absolutely no security. Everyone was safe and well behaved, I didn't see any under age drinking either. It made this old punk (I'm 57) VERY happy to see youngsters rocking out to punk rock! I've been a fan of Otoboke Beaver for years. Other great Japanese punk bands I know of Komsume - 3 piece pop-punk The Do Do Do's - 3 piece pop-punk Pinky Donna Seskimo Midori - Jazz Punk (now split unfortunately) I's - Punk band of the legend that is Ano Polkadot Stingray Tonaroko Rammy - 4 piece all female punk Tendouji - who I saw in Sapporo
