Hey Frey, i wanna ask if im starting out to learn SEO - are they any course you recommend me taking?
@FreyChu8 сағат бұрын
@@DannyChowmrchow I’ve never taken an SEO course so I wouldn’t be able to recommend any. What I did was just spent like 100 hours learning through KZbin back in 2022 and started a directory site as a knowledge playground to understand which SEO principles worked and which didn’t. It sucks to say, but SEO is changing really rapidly these days. Many basic principles still work but most SEO advice I read online is just so wrong. Lots of people who share advice don’t actually own and operate their own website, experimenting with their own SEO tactics. My rec is to use KZbin, go down the rabbit hole of on page optimization, backlinks, internal linking, and keyword research. I will also be making vids on directory SEO in the future

Thanks for sharing. Question: since Wordpress has no code templates and since you did all the work of scraping and cleaning and enriching the data, why did you hire a word press dev instead of just pasting the data in? I assume you can just paste the data in right?

@@bobbyw1074 yeah totally, you can just paste the data yourself for no cost. But as you can imagine for this niche, pasting 5000 listings worth of data would take a very long time. Even at 100 listings, it’s a lot lol I pay for speed so I can start another website directory build immediately after

@@jeffreylhayes depends on how you plan on monetizing your directory. Displays ads, I try and target 30-50k monthly searches because that’s the range where you hit a $1k/month+ directory. Could be much less if you’re incorporating affiliate plays, selling leads, etc

So pretty much look for industries or niche businesses that have a lackluster or overall middling web presence overall? Like "bounce castle rentals near me" or "mold abatement hershey pa" and build off of that? For instance, with mold abatement, you would focus on second city sort of locales (e.g. instead of Pittsburgh you would focus on Johnstown, PA or Altoona, PA). You essentially offer arbitrage in getting the customer closer to where they need to be. In that, do you try to focus on local/homegrown businesses over national chains/franchises? Or do you leverage those chains and their pull to bring more traffic to your directory?
@FreyChu8 сағат бұрын
@@rick.knowlton yeah there’s a lot to unpack here, but absolutely you can build a local directory and sell leads for those niches. I personally go for high traffic keywords. That way I can build it for high traffic and it’s really passive once you rank #1 for your target keyword. I can already tell without searching it up that ‘mold abatement’ and ‘bounce castle rentals’ wouldn’t have enough search volume for me, with the style of directory site I like building You can totally target chains, or branded keywords, to increase traffic to your directory. Again it’s so dependent on your niche and how you’re trying to monetize your directory

Hey Frey, nice one!! You need to work on some stuff: use AI to identify dogs or full parks on those photos, you will probably get more parks without dog/park in the name. If you can grab the reviews, AI can also help you build a list of keywords for each dog park. Work on some SQL skills, it would help you a lot to just query filter things on that database. SQLite is free, easy and awesome. That will also help to easily edit (update) those lines with your selected keywords, after counting and prioritizing them to get the most important. On a (maybe) 15.000 parks (assuming you deleted a lot of good stuff), you should find a bunch of other keywords important for dog owners…

Great video! You don't have to enrich manually. You can use LLMs to do the enrichment for you. When scraping the data, also pull the review tags and the top 10 to 20 reviews. The file size of the scrape data may become unmanageably large, so you may have to use tools to chunk the data into separate files. Once you clean the data, you can then use a tool like GPTforWork or the ChatGPT API, to have an LLM read the top reviews for each row, and then answer simple yes/no questions based on the reviews. (Eg: Based on the reviews, is this an off-leash dog park?) If you can use the ChatGPT API directly, your cost for enriching the entire 5K rows of data will probably be less than $20. Also, you don't have to use Outscraper to get the data. There are sellers on Fiverr who can give you the exact same data for $50. Obviously, quality varies, but if you shop around a bit, you will find very reliable sellers. And lastly, in my opinion, this is a very risky business model. Given how commoditised information has become in the AI age, you will need way more value additions than shown in this example to actually have a sustainable directory business. There is absolutely nothing stopping Google from using its LLM to answer people's questions about dog parks (or any other business listed on Google Maps), and give them pretty much all the information that one can possibly scrape from reviews -- after all, they already have all the info on their own platform. Edit: Also, using regex can help you simplify cleaning. You can use any free LLM to help you generate a regex string that matches for multiple words like dog, pooch, puppy, mutt, canine, etc etc. This will retain a lot of relevant, useful rows, instead of paying good money to scrape them and then throwing them away.

Hey Frey thanks for the video! I think outscraper might be skirting around the Places API TOS by not "caching or storing" the data they send to you, and not selling the data, instead selling the service of pulling the data. However if you use the data you might violate Google's TOS, should probably be careful. Anyways GL!

Hey Fery, fellow web dev here, thanks for sharing a ton of info here. I also have some sites but they're not in the directory related niches and just mentioning for context. So I watched a couple of your videos in detail and just have a couple questions/concerns: 1. Building out a directory using "Near me", doesn't the default google and google maps does a much better job at that? The google listing comes up above the fold in 1-4th position, It also has our exact location whereas a directory site can only get a broad location based on an ip address unless the user allow us location access by clicking the prompt window button, which is a big inconvenience and people usually just go back to google maps. 2. I personally have never used a website to locate anything and always rely on google maps for that - do you personally not use maps and instead rely on a directory site for something? Can you give me a couple random examples, that actually makes sense. 3. As google is improving more and more of their services (Generative AI changes in SERP & Maps), don't you think it's risky to even venture for this at this point - 2025 onwards? I mean yeah for now it'd have a high chance of success but we are now at openai o3 point and so spending the time and resources on this would have a hard time to remain successful on the long run. Looking forward to your thoughts, thanks man!

why not focus on the major cities first? And then expand… or maybe 10-20 parks in a city
@FreyChu2 күн бұрын
Not a bad idea, but major cities are generally harder to rank for on google. Google does not like traffic-less pages, so if you target small cities it's like super easy to rank on the first page quickly and start getting some traffic. More traffic, more trust, easier it is to rank for larger pages imo
