Great work!! You clearly know your stuff. I'm just decided to re-enter vinyl with the purchase of an Audiolab 6000A, I'm now in the market for a turntable. Started off looking a vintage such as Pioneer PL-550, i liked their look and must admit was pretty adverse to the plastic and/or DJ style tables out there. BUT have done some further research, the Technics tables continually appear as the best out there. There are a lot of models though and they appear to hold their price incredibly well - so started thinking that I'd be better off with a new SL-1500C (which is about $1,800, with a 2M Red) rather than chancing an older table which I'd like need to get restored (and those parts alone aren't cheap). Did cross my mind however that maybe the SL-1500C isn't set for ionic status into the future (won't hold it's price)... what do you think?

Hi and glad you are enjoying my very low-key channel! There is tons more on this over on my website including this article on new TT options, including the 1500: liquidaudio.com.au/faq/are-there-any-decent-affordable-new-turntables/ There are 100+ other vinyl and turntable articles over there too. Briefly, the new 1500 is OK but not an icon. A good pre-owned SL-l1200 would be better. Technics made lots of good affordable machines, as did many others. Best of luck with the journey!

Excellent overview of this Sony vintage masterpiece. However, the amplifier was not cheap, and certainly not "budget". In 1977, the amplifier was priced at about £200... a lot of money for most folks. The amplifier would be well over one thousand pounds in today's money... £100 in 1977 would be the equivalent of over £600-700 today!

Thanks for your comment, Jezza. I work on gear from this era ranging from affordable to very expensive, and this little Sony was certainly at the cheap end of that spectrum. It wasn't the cheapest amplifier in its class, but it was indeed very affordable compared to many more expensive amplifiers!

@LiquidAudio I suppose I could "split hairs" and say that the TA 1630 and 2650 were affordable - "cheap". I suppose in modern parlance the TA 3650 would be considered "mid- fi"? Anyway, I have been enjoying your channel for a few years now and have learned a lot! In fact, it was your review of the TA 3650 that encouraged me to purchase the little Sony - thank you! I own a lot of hi-fi...

Nice video! I bought this amplifier about 2 years ago, from a Brazilan guy (techinician of course), restored(capacitors, transistors,resistors etc.), also the exterior is like new. Here in Amsterdam. Sounds great and has enough power for my Triangle Borea III; 90db sensitivity. I can't put the volume pot at a quarter, that's to loud. But it sounds also very well at low volumes. And i don't need a subwoofer, low frequencies, bass enough. Bluesound Node 2i streamer. Spotify and very often "Radio Paradise" , it's in the Bluesound streamer. Very nice radio station (my taste anyway)!! I had also "Tidal" very good sound( higher resolution etc.), but the user interface gave problems sometimes. Spotify never, works perfectly everytime. At least my experience. Maybe now it's solved by Tidal?

I purchased a PM665VXI since I could not find the non vxi which I always wanted. However, the description on eBay said the speaker wires heat up. I am wondering is that a serious problem or someone didn't set it properly for correct speaker ohm? I am just guessing. I may ship it to you and get it fixed or may just do it myself first. I am thinking of recapping the whole thing from top to bottom including the power supply filters.

Sound....."ok" ???? At the time they were streets ahead of most brands delivering the best value for money. Sure, all brabds suffered from build quality.... I hate their poor pcb quality.....tracks lift....bad soldering of certain units, especially the 3140. I agree, putting high wattage resistors so close to fragile components is nuts!!!!
@LiquidAudioАй бұрын
From my perspective, there's quite a bit more to it than that. Perspective is critically important and in the bigger scheme of things, this always was just cheap and cheerful gear aimed at the low-cost, high-value market sector. There was similarly priced but better sounding and better built gear available at the time, but the UK hi-fi press for example were champions for NAD and other local brands above many others due to various conflicts of interest. This in itself is a fascinating rabbit hole for another time. The build and parts quality of many or even most of the hundreds of NAD pieces I've worked on over the years is just awful, unfortunately so I struggle to get very enthused about NAD!
@mercury8180Ай бұрын
Good sounding amp but the major design flaw is that they over heat very quickly due to inadequate ventilation and a somewhat small heatsink. Some of the resistors should also be raised more from the board to allow ventilation beneath them. So almost the perfect amount but not quite.

You must never use IPA on areas with printing like fascias, plastics etc. Cleaning electronics is a specialised sub-field of its own. I've developed proprietary cleaning regimens and written about equipment cleaning, here: liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-should-i-clean-my-hi-fi-gear/. If in doubt, take your equipment to a specialist.

beautiful unit there. A note on the display: in my experience VFDs don't dim so substantially when they haven't at all been used. I supposed it's possible, but IIRC, it's like regular tubes or bulbs where they get used up over time. I think it's well worth looking at the display circuit for some caps that have drifted or dried out and I would scope the power supply to the display itself just to see what it's getting

Thanks, Brian and yes I will check the display drive circuits in due course. These radios are known for premature display dimming, unfortunately. She runs so well that I'm not really too concerned.

Thank you! The next steps require diagnostics on a test bench by someone who knows what to look for so the best advice I can offer is to get the player to a specialist. If you are in Perth I'd be happy to assist but I know that most people are elsewhere worldwide. UD players are generally considered the least repairable of the disc players or the least viable to repair, so consider replacement cost vs repair cost.

It is worth mentioning the speaker protection circuit with timed power on and instant off, and the output stage's short circuit protection (all around the relay). Indeed, the components are of high quality and I have never had to change any since the late 80's, but the RCA connectors. Still, I had to touch up some cold weld points, which is common with large PCBs.

Evotech charge a fortune for this and I'm going to have to disagree. I have used quite a bit of their stuff over the years . . . nicely made but rarely fits properly. Let's face it, it wouldn't cost any more to manufacture parts which fit as opposed to parts that dont and leave a gap between the seat and the light unit and then . . . there's the screws that are too long. I mean jeez . . they are charging a bomb and they just can't get it right. Very irritating if you've parted with the dosh. The last two accessories I had, I sent back for a refund - at least they got that right. I ordered their rad guard which only fits if you have the stainless radiator guards as on your bike . . if the bike has the black plastic radiator cowls, the guard doesn't fit. They have been told countless times and yet they still sell the radiator guard as suitable for all versions of the R1250r . . . . It isn't!!!
@LiquidAudio3 ай бұрын
Appreciate your perspective and thanks for commenting. I experienced first-hand the rad guard not fitting the 'standard' black plastic trim R1250R and yes, they need to correct this. Also agreed regarding incorrect screws like I experienced here. That said, on balance, I find their products well-made and well-priced. Not perfect in some cases though, I agree with you there.
