Modification worked perfectly with me, at least 85% better. Did exactly how you suggested, only thing was I used the tip of a soldering iron gun to melt the tiny hole.

This is how you would do what is necessary if you had littlerally no tools . First get some tools. A pair of nippers , $3 , usually red , originally were sold as clippers of leads off pc boards. A small soldering iron. A little epoxy or superglue. Don't bother making the hole larger, not necessary. Remove the microphone from the board with your soldering iron. Add a couple insulated leads to the pins. not too long, long enough so when you glue the microphone directly against the hole, you can put the leads in the pc board holes and solder them. You could fill the hole where the microphone is with foam, although you would do it for mechanical stability. The microphone is against the hole now, it will sound great. It will sound better than this mod because you glued it right to the little hole. no gap. That's how its done.

We even got a plus. Due to pour soldiering work and lack of pin outs. I found it expedient to photograph the whole . And have a template(photo) to resolder. barring any accidents. Cheers om. de kv4li

Modification worked great. Local hams could really tell the difference over the 2 meter repeater. TNX.

Although it does the job, that is the strangest most miserable of screwdrivers I have ever seen, seems like something that was crafted in the jungles of Borneo by natives that have never even laid eyes on a bicycle.

Thanks for sharing. Very helpful! Would you happen to have any suggestions on how to make the connection of the microphone plug into the radio more 'conductive'?

I did a very similar mod to you but used sticky backed draft excluder foam to creat a gasket round the mic element. I covered that whole side of the board with foam and also the inside of the back cover to fill all the acoustic voids. The enclosure doesn't resonate as much so the receive audio is clearer. Even the button click sounds more satisfying now. .
