Thank you for sharing your adoptee experience about this, Autumn! I wish adoptive parents understood what you're saying more. If we were more on board with our adopted children, we would be able to help them find resources to find relief from at least some of the pain you're going through. But often in our ignorance or our inability to see the Truth in front of our eyes, we adoptive parents ADD ON trauma to our adopted kids. And that's not OK. Regarding your "effed up" poetry: I asked my first adoption therapist if adoption trauma is always THE THING - the root of the self-destructive behavior. And she said it's not necessarily always THE THING, but it's always A THING. If we can just acknowledge that, we'll already be one step ahead, right? And holy cow I can't wait to see you Autumn, Moses, Daria, Kira, and more wonderful adoptees IN PERSON next weekend at our OC screening. Tickets here: ReckoningOC.eventbrite.com Join us in person OR on Zoom for our 7pm PST screening on July 29, 2023.

Adoption legislation is a private colonisation. By law I was rendered FILIUS NULLIUS, "child of no one" and then the government chooses my Adopters and conspires by hiding my birth certificate and issue a new FAKE birth certificate stating I was born to a genetic stranger. This type of legislation needs to be binned in the SHAME bin of legislation based on POWER OVER OTHERS.

The reform is family preservation FIRST! Preventing unnecessary adoptions by educating and informing Mothers of the real facts and hard truths of the adoption process including the trauma that separating a Mother and her baby inflicts on them both. Family preservation and open records for all adult adoptees is the right things to do. Mothers are deceived and coerced to relinquish under false pretenses and their children do not enter into any contract and should not be held to secrecy. No one has ever produced a document guaranteeing secrecy or anonymity. The indu$try is not based on truth or transparency and therefore needs complete and total reform with clear and concise regulation and legal consequences when ethics are not front and center when providing non-directive options to a Mother considering adoption for her baby.

As an Australian Domestic adoptee from the closed adoption era (Forced Adoption era/Baby Scoop era), I first read ‘The Primal Wound’ 25 years ago. This reading was the first step for me in acquiring a vocabulary that explained and described my experience of adoption. ‘Reckoning with the Primal Wound’ helps elevate the conversation beyond the printed page with an intelligent and intimate portrait of the lived experience of relinquishment and removal. In centring the adoptee experience within this larger conversation it helps give a much-needed voice that is often not heard. What it helps to illustrate is that ‘adoption’ is in itself not a simple and singular event. It has a dramatic and ongoing effect throughout the lifetime of the individual. This effect is also then inherited by any future offspring. As this story unfolded on screen I was profoundly moved as I could see difficulties playing out, with questions being asked that were all too similar to my own experience and other adoptees I intimately know.

Thank you for making this movie. I stumbled upon it today for a reason. I always think I've worked through all my trauma with my adoption, then a feeling pops up out of nowhere, the primal would came up and I found you. The general population needs to see it because they have no idea and no understanding. Trying to talk about it with non-adoptees, they don't have a clue. They don't know what language to use, how to reference your life, and your parents when commenting on your personal story, of being adopted, what it's like to be adopted. Adopted parents are seen as kind, wonderful, loving angels to take in a baby that is not theirs. We're told that we're special, someone chose us. What a crazy narrative that was created to make adoptive parents and adoptees feel better. I was recently told that parents who adopt children are angels, that they can take a child that's not theirs and love and accept it. I was horrified by her statement--educated people who are ignorant and clueless. However, I do get that some people want a baby so badly, that they do whatever it takes to get one, and maybe they should not be parents. But they need the baby to make their marriage work, to fit into their dream of life. Adoptees are the most marginalized segment of society. I'm an adoptee. I've observed and witnessed over the years, several people adopting children, it's mostly out of selfishness because they need their family to be complete. It's not adopting children who have no parents, or from impoverished countries, people who want their children to be raised in a better environment, sometimes people sell their children. What I've witnessed is people paying to get the baby of their dreams, that fits into their world to fill the voids in their lives. It's happened in my family, and I know several middle-aged couples who have adopted their first children recently because they've been married for a long time or alone, and they need that child to complete their family or their life. That's how I ended up with my adoptive parents.

Leaving us hanging with the question, “Should a child never be adopted” isn’t fair. I’ve been shut down with that question too many times to count, which feels like my trauma is being dismissed. I hope I live to see the day where adoption is a last resort and when needed, adoptees are empowered and society allows adoptees to process their grief and express themselves freely…and have complete access to their biological families should they so choose. I’m eager (but tentative, because it’s gonna open unattended wounds) to see this documentary. I’m so thankful for technology and social media that has given us the ability to mobilize the adoptee community and educate society. Thank you fellow adoptees, for the emotional labour you put into this kind of work. I see you.
