So I have had my cartridge for a year Now (I was giving a tank nd fish had no idea how to take care of a fish but here we are a Year later .. I noticed my cartridge is dirty . I have been rinsing in the old water bucket 🪣 when I change my tank .. my question is is it safe to change my whole filter to the one your talking about ? Or is it still dangerous because it has no good bacteria?

Hello. If you are still available, can i ask you if these plants will propagate or grow from taking clippings and pushing them down into the soil to take root. thank you.

I have worked with plants for 50 years and baby plants that form at the base of a mother plant are referred to as pups. Runners generally refer to plants that develop at the end of a rhizome like vallisneria.or pigmy chain swords. Other than that, great video.

What if I replace the cartridge, but I also have an empty one with floss and then bio wheels.

I'm curious if they ever raised any. Considering a planted 29 gallon aquarium with just 2 angelfish inside. Would be planted probably with no other tankmates.

If you look at the nutrients on those bags, every 000 that substrate is made to be like a sponge and your fertilizer you add to it. It’ll soak it up until the plants and need it. That’s why I like Activ-Flora Floracor Black Planted Aquarium Substrate better

@8:15 Im a long time fishkeeper who has been experimenting with the Walstadt deep substrate method. I find that laying a layer of pond mud and detritus on top of the soil layer, just under the sand cap, works well for instant cycling of a tank, along with a used sponge filter. Two weeks out, and im at 0-0-40 on my NH4, NO2 and NO3. And the plants are bonkers, too!😊

I went to lowe's and bought organic potting soil. Added shredded plant matter along with pond dirt, non sifted. Mixed in additives such as Epson salt, Ironite, and others following father fish methods. 2" pool filter sand cap. Added plants. Expect algae until plants establish. No water changes, just top off. Introduced DIY co2 after 30 days and liquid fertilizers 2 per week. Haven't cleaned tank since co2 added. I trim plants when they break water. 55 gallon, canister filter with pre-filter, cheap bright lights 10 hrs /day. cut intensity when algae forms on sand. 3 otocats, 1 catfish, 35 tetra's.

Does anyone know when it’s time to change the filter I’ve had my fish for about 8 months now and the filter is real dirty . When I clean his tank I do rinse it off with his old water because I was told to do that . I’m new to fish keeping as he was gifted to me so I did not even get a chance to cycle my tank so I’m nervous of just changing the filter if it is not cycled . Can any one help me ? My tank is a top fin for a betta. Luckily my little guy who I love now survived and since I never cycled a tank I never had the experience on how to do this .

Can I take 5gallons of water from a established tank and pour it in the new tank Will that work as well for establishing the new tank Or would that water be too dirty 🤷🏼♂️✌️🇨🇦
@ozzie26123 ай бұрын
no, the water wont have enough good bacteria in it , you would be better putting some of the substrate from old tank to new or plants and ornaments
@bobv580617 күн бұрын
@@ozzie2612I do think there’s value in adding water from an established aquarium. Yes, the bacteria aren’t in the water, but it will contain traces of ammonia and nitrites to speed up the growth of the nitrifying bacteria in the new tank.

This is so helpful! But if I were to switch filters, how do I prep the new media?? Can I just let it sit in the current filter for a few weeks until bacteria is able to colonize?

I can see you sitting on the floor of Walmart looking through soil for your aquarium for hours - that's basically what I did. Though, I'm of Russian/Mongolian descent so my eyes are a lot... smaller than yours. 😅😂. You've them big eyes.👀 I, on the other hand, am always getting accused of being high. 😄 Good video, I'm going to pick some up for my other tank set up. I appreciate it.

The key centance i ear you say is ad a few fish ,and that really is the crucial part here.if one takes a bare aquarium and puts a floatingplant in there and one fish than that tank is cycled.if you put 20 fish in it it is not.on the other hand if you feed that one fish tons of food that it can not proces the tank wil not be cycled wereas if you dont feed that 20 fish for the first week and sifon out the waste they produce than that tank is also cycled.😊

do you think emergent plants absorb nitrate better with bare roots in the water, or with the roots inside the soil substrate?

I thought you were about to tell us what we can do if we can’t get a used sponge, not tell us where to get them 😅 was kind of hoping to get help with that situation. Maybe it’s just not possible or a good idea to quick start a cycle without a used sponge?

I have a tetra whisper 20 hang on the back filter. I just put floss in and got rid of my bio bag that came with it that has the charcoal in it. I did cut the front floss material off and kept that in my filter so as to not lose some good bacteria. My question is, I have a fine mesh bag of Purigen next to the floss. I bought a bag of ceramic rings but they are really big. Wondering where you got yours? Can I put that in there along with the bag of purigen or do they both do the same thing? If I can't, can I put the bag of ceramic rings just in the bottom of my aquarium or hang it on the side?
