This kind of passion is so rare these days. Too much emphasis on turnover and profit margin, not enough effort on making things that are unique and stand out as beautiful in their own right. Planned housing developments here in the US are a great(horrifying) example of standardization and loss of quality favor of turnover and return on investment.

I just bought one of thier Kanabans 10 minutes ago from Kurashige!! Amazing video. Tell them thanks! :) Also I had to wait almost 2 years for a restock on their 340*90*24.5mm size lol. It would be great if they produced more ;)

I saw your earlier video and you had a Hawaiian shirt on, so you are becoming bilingual? Wonderful stuff you are sharing, I have a fairly comprehensive share of western planes and chisels, but have learned the oriental origins and its fascinating. Great work!

I wish I could share a laugh with the old man because Bro was struggling without clamps. That old timer had to step in and show em how it was done. Soon as I got into wood working I didn’t know how much all these guys relied on clamps. I never clamped or vised anything for 15 years as an electrician and never used power tools. First off it makes your back strong… hence the phrase” put some back into it” really your whole body and second I could feel what the old timer was feeling while our young friend here was looking like a toddler trying to open juice box! As a young man of 37 I gotta message to put out there and that’s “put some back into it”😊

Thanks so much for these videos of your visits to the blacksmiths. I appreciate the amount of detail, your intelligent questions, and the video quality. I also very much like that in this and your other videos you focus on your subjects and their craft rather than yourselves. One of the things I loved from the videos of the three smiths is that you revealed their different personalities and approaches to their craft. They all seemed like folks I'd like to know.

Thank you for the video. I've always been curious. What about the keisaburo plan. I really want to buy it, may I know the email address of this blacksmith?
@thecarpentrylife
@thecarpentrylife 19 күн бұрын
I don't think he will respond to emails. However, I think if you were to order a blade you can do that through Kurashige Tools. I do believe Kurashige has some Keizaburo blades available. People do wait a long time to get one of his blades. However, if you do want one you can buy one from him in person at one of the festivals in Miki city. There is a festival happening November 2-3, 2024. This festival usually happens the weekend before the National Kezuroukai. I would recommend coming to Japan in November and visiting both Miki City and Hadano, Kanagawa for the 2024 events.

Hi. I'm still going through these amazing videos of yours. So thank you. The gentleman you buy the, Kannas from at the end. His jacket is amazing. Could you cover (film) some vintage workwear clothing. Maybe modern and vintage. I have a small collection of French Sanfor jackets. They are very good. But the Japanese ones have a wonderful style too. I would like one.

It's surprising to me to see him using what looks like rift-sawn white oak instead of quarter-sawn. Won't this make it so that the base won't stay consistently flat from season to season? (especially since white oak has almost a 2:1 tangential to radial expansion)
@elijahcherweznik3505
@elijahcherweznik3505 26 күн бұрын
I'm interested if he finds that this doesn't actually matter much? I've been thinking of starting to build my own planes and everything I have read makes a really big deal about using quarter-sawn wood and so it was surprising to see a master doing something that is so different from all of the literature.

For the wooded hammer. Is it safe to assume using rubber or metal spilts the wood because of the type of vibration the material gives ?
@thecarpentrylife
@thecarpentrylife 11 күн бұрын
Typically we will use a wooden hammer or a rubber mallet. These tend to be less damaging to the wood.

Interesting the multiple tool ability in their so very specialized mentality. Absolutely not a lack of talent, but what a society will pay for. The USA wants those tools this gentleman makes, but want to pay a Harbor Freight price. I would be embarrassed to buy this man's work at a rate less than he would be comfortable receiving. Anyway, I realize I am wandering as Im waiting to have a medical procedure performed. The pain meds have me feeling maybe better than I thought.😂

Sometimes the Kurashige tool shop online store has Koyoshiya plane blocks available. They will be blanks that need to be finished by the owner. Each block is custom fit to the blade so you will need to have tools in order to finish the plane block properly.

So very nice! The craftsman and the video. I am 65 years old and all my life it has been the same. Most upper level craftsmen will explain their processes until they are blue in the face and are happy to do so. As I heard a foundry craftsman explain, "I will explain to my competitor how to make these parts with no problem. He still will not be able to make the part". It was not arrogance, just a fact. He was that good. 😂 Thank you for the "mini training course".
