National Japanese Plane (Kanna) Competition - Kezuroukai - Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, Japan - Nov. 2022

In this video, we travel to Iwamizawa on the island of Hokkaido, Japan for the national Kezuroukai (削ろう会) - Japanese Plane Competition. This is the largest Kezuroukai with most carpenters coming from all over Japan and in some case the world.
In our walk around we run in to some friends that we met at another Kezuroukai and also met some new people. Of course we always learn something new and discover some cool carpentry tools that might entice you.

As an engineer and designer I have always admired the Japanese for their skills that for many years have been passed down through family and generations. Sadly the world seems not to appreciate skills like this as much as they should . For a long time now I have admired your culture especially the respect you have for cleanliness. Older generations etc etc . If I could I’d move over to Japan and just spend the rest of my life exploring small workshops watching masters at work . ❤❤❤🇬🇧

@@JohnnyArtPavlou there are many products / items including art from people all over the world . Some of which I have no interest in or particularly like down to personal taste . But as an engineer and designer I appreciate virtually anyone who has a talent with physically creating things 👍🇬🇧

@@newagetemplar6100 I totally do, too. I just being a little bit of a philosophical asshole. The fact that people have such a level of skill and such a traditional craftsmanship that still somehow being kept alive is beautiful wonderful and admirable. I’m just speaking to the particulars of how thin you can shave a piece of wood… I mean it’s it’s useless. But I suppose you could say it’s as useless as any art form the rest of it… Especially Japanese framing and joinery is completely astonishing.

I think the greatest craftsman in all spheres of human endeavor are playing a very deep inner game with themselves… And somehow communing with the greatest human spirits and trying to repay them by humbly and devotedly mastering their craft. The competition is great, but I definitely want to go SHOPPING there! Now I have more hammers than most people, but that glimpse of racks of hammers... maybe that guy IS the best! I've never seen anything like the hammer head we were seeing. What a dream! And to actually meet the guy, you could have a consultation! And that's just hammers, what about custom plane blades? What a sight. You might need a few thousand in cash and walk out with a little bag.... How I dream of shopping in Japan!

I have a habit of buying Japanese tools each time I visit (which was every other year, until the pandemic), and that looks like my kind of place! Alas, a Google search didn't turn anything up. It depends on what category you competed in. I have seen some as thin as 2 microns averaged. For the larger plane competition I have seen 12 microns.

This tool is called a Yari Ganna. It is used for putting a textured finish on wood. It was only recently that they discovered that this tool was used in temple construction when they found it at the Horiyuji Temple during a renovation. It is not a tool commonly used, but a lot of Japanese carpenters still practice with it. Today, the Yari Ganna has been modernized from its earlier versions. I would say it's nice to have if you want to add a decorative texture to a wood surface.
