I have both. Sins of the First Scholar is the definitive edition of Dark Souls. It is THE Souls game and the only one that should ever be played.

I bought dark souls 2 about a week after it came out ony ps3. It was my first souls game and as a 15 year old it changed my life. I played over 1000 hours of just vanilla PVP. Now my little brother is starting to play all the souls games and dark souls 2 is the last one. My ps5 has it downloaded and when he plays I'm constantly talking about the changes and how cool the different versions are. I replay atleast twice a year now. Dark souls 2 will always mean the most to me other than bloodborne. It's the most replayable and the only souls game where I have a blast doing a hex run. Right now doing a strength faith build. Power stancing 2 lightning infused greatswords with the unique invader armors.

Scholar is way better. You can achieve almost the same lighting effect as original just by using post processing aka reshade but then you also have the more developed and final game. That said though I do hope that stayd gets to release his DS2 mod.

It's noteworthy that in Vanilla this particular Heide Knight was guranteed to drop the Heide Knight Sword. This weapon is frustratingly rare in Scholar. In my opinion a much better and more interesting reward than a few extra souls from a repeat enemy you already know from the starting area.

I like the changes at the lighting that scholar did, so now the torch has a purpuse cuz in vanilla u can clearly see in darker areas, maybe it has a use with the spiders but if i remember right it doesn't even work in vanilla

The dragon should not be in Heide in the scholar version for various reasons, first it is a boss that is much further ahead, and finding it first as a mob loses the surprise effect like a badly done recycling, then the dragon has nothing in common with the two bosses because one is a dragon slayer and putting it next to it doesn't make much sense, while for the dragon knight, he rode dragons with two legs without wings and they were called wyrms, while the dragon present in Heide is more similar to a wyvern, another better aspect in vanilla is that the knights of Heide are wandering figures lost in Drangleic, according to the lore Heide is in ruins destroyed and submerged by the sea, the surviving knights fled to survive such a disaster, over time they became empty for this they are not hostile unless attacked, if you use the miracle calm the soul or urn of holy water, they will suffer damage because they are empty, in the scholar their presence makes little sense in Heide, especially their awakening after the defeat of the dragon knight.

I think the trap chests will randomly either throw poison or arrow, like everytime you replay you might get something different. At least from what I remember. I would have to replay vanilla/scholar multiple times and see if I get both combinations.

Vanilla lighting is much better than Sotfs. In Sotfs it so bright that colors become white
