My Dad always says, were you born on a field? When someone's up the duff it means you're pregnant. Going for the messages means going shopping and not to the post office. You're a gannet means being greedy while eating. What a besum! Someone that is dirty or misbehaving..I could go on..

This video was very interesting. I am making a video covering this being on my other channel All Monsters Go To Space, and I was wondering if I could reference your video in mine. I will include a link to the video and your homepage, if you give permission too. Thank you. Dani Waggett.

Is that you is normal in NE England. Steep and door are normal, we eat steeply peas. We use spelk for a splinter. I’ve heard squint for non level, but haven’t heard it for a while, tend to hear ‘on the piss’ now.

I really hope you enjoy Scotland but please dont use Scots words when talking to Scottish people lol many Scottish people will find it cringe when tourists try to sound Scots. That said theres lots of things to see and do and lots of good folk :)

Steep = soak. Steepies = bread soaked in warm milk (used to be given to children or someone who can eat solid food)

Much of that is NOT slang. It's Scots, which is a separate language

A big omission is ken, meaning know... "Ah dinnae ken, Miss!" a brave child that's no done their revision might say to the teacher! Beware east and west pronunciations being different though: in West Fife for example, ken sounds more like cane - and dinnae can run intae it, so, "Ah di' ae ken, Miss...", or, "Ah nivver ken't that - did you ken that?" "Aye, ah ken roughly whit ye mean."

So. If you need to, can you drop it and talk to someone who can only understand England English? I'm an Aussie, and I have to drop all slang and accent at work for those who have English as a second language.I could understand most of whal you said without any help. I watched trainspotting, which had enough context and I can adjust to the dialect. I like speaking local vernacular, often want to welcome workmates by speaking a friendlier English.

I hate to tell you Erin but when you get to a certain age you could be prone to bowel cancer ,so the hospital will send you a test kit. Where you have to wrap your hand in toilet paper and catch some poo then get the test stick ,collect some poo on it and send it to the hospital..at least you won't need to have a prostate check ,this is much easier than what you go through as a girl .

I am writing a story that takes place in Scotland, and I am using Scottish brogue where necessary. I have done quite a bit of research on the language, fascinated with the different words and how they are used. I am trying to make it as "true" and "correct" as I can, as well as make it enjoyable for all to read. Thank you for giving me some insight on some words. At the same time, I want to make it "readable" for all to read without it being too garbled. Do you know what I mean? I would want you to read it and say I did a fairly good job, (smiling). Why did I choose to write about something that takes place in Scotland? I do have some Scottish ancestry for one, and I am intrigued with the culture and language. One more point is that a chapter in the story takes place in late 1700's, early 1800's. So....I need to use the words and how they are spoken in the right context. I will tell you this has been a wonderful endeavor for me. I truly hope it will be worth the reading! Thank you again.
