Either a 5 space or 6 space brooch bar, depending on how wide your chest & shoulders are. I'm not sure what you mean by "dry bar" as they are pretty standard and generic 🤔

Brilliant video, thanks so much, one question, how long did it take to do? I've got a 6 medal set to do and I've given myself a day to get it done, is that long enough?
@JesterRlP9 күн бұрын
It depends. Overlapped can take a couple of days. I tend to do it in stages as I normally have a few sets going at a time. But if you're doing them side by side, no reason why you can't do it in a day - allowing time for mistakes, which I still make, here and there. Good luck 👍

Thanks for the video been mounting a few sets for family. Could i ask where do you put clasps, i have the farther in law who now has a cadet forces medal and clasp. Ive seen them mounted at the bottom near the medal bar and i think i read something about the clasp been equidistant from the medal bar and top of the ribbon. Just wondered whats correct? Also when you have more than one clasp do they just go together and move up to keep the distance?

Since this is the British style of mounting, how would one theoretically go about mounting medals from countries that use different mounting styles, like triangular for Hungary and Austria, or pentagonal for Denmark and the former USSR?
@JesterRlPАй бұрын
I have absolutely no idea! My first thought would be to approach those individuals who offer the service - or to Google pictures of said medals to try and reverse-engineer the process?
@TounushiАй бұрын
@@JesterRlP Well, historically German, Austrian, and Russian empires went back and forth with their styles when they were giving them out to each other's officials and soldiery. And I've seen an old British bar with an Order of St. Anne on it in this presented mounting style, rather than the Russian one. But the only modern examples I've seen are for North Convoy veterans and they seem to go about it on an individual basis (one on a straight ribbon suspension, another keeping the Russian pentagonal suspension), and one Russian bar with a Former Yugoslavia NATO medal in the mix on a Russian-style mount. Most relevant use case might be with the Danish style, since that's the same as the Russian, except with a wider ribbon, and they're more integrated with other western powers. As to why they use a style the same as the Russians, I have no idea. Might be something related to the Napoleonic Wars, the same as why half of European countries' guards units use the collar bars German soldiers are always shown using.

@JesterRlP2 ай бұрын
Hi Tom - thank you 😊 Yeah the loop of thread around whatever hangs the medal, is a bit of a lottery - it's not supposed to keep it rigid. If it's a ring fixing like the Jubilee or NATO medals, it will move a lot. A solid fixing such as LSGC or General Service Medal will be a lot steadier. I put blu-tac between the back of the medal and board to stop them "swinging" too much. Hope that helps?

Do you use this technique for mounting miniatures that require an overlap? I believe the max amount of side by side miniatures is 10.

Miniatures remain side by side + it's normally only the brooch bars which go up to 10. I managed to source a 12-space brooch bar on eBay for one set I did. Quick question if your monitoring this. I've six medals two are UN. As the board is 194mm with a six space mount clasp would o apply logic and have the last 5 medals overlap by 0.2 mm to compensate for the larger UN ribbon
@JesterRlP Жыл бұрын
There's two ways you can do this.... 1. Use a smaller board and a 5 space clasp overlapping the medals. 2. Put the medal ribbons side by side as close together as possible. There will be a small overlap at each edge of the board, but instead of feeding the ribbons through the slot in the brooch, just tack them down and put the brooch in position over the top and stitch it in the usual places as well as several stitches through the slot and top edge of the brooch to hold it in place properly. Hope that makes sense.

Hi, sorry if this has been asked but in your previous tutorial you stated always do medals with bars first then align from that bit here you say start from the right, also they don't seem to be level which I've learnt from you, they should be, thank you, your a great teacher 😊
@JesterRlP Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes you start mounting from the right, but in order to gauge where the bottom edges should be, you take a traditional 36mm medal such as LSGC, OSM, GSM, Iraq medal - and lay it half over the board, half overhanging. That's your bottom medal line right there. All the others' bottom edges should then meet that line 👍

What’s your opinion. For overlap with larger ribbons ie 38mm like nato and UN? With this method you use marking out the centreline of the ribbon, the ribbon overlap will be uneven, but the medals will be evenly spaced. To me this is the correct way. Or is the ribbon overlap supposed to be even and medals not evenly spaced? Thanks mate. Brilliant video
@JesterRlP Жыл бұрын
Yes the ribbons are supposed to be equally spaced / overlapped with at least ⅓ of the ribbon visible. That means of course, that a 38mm ribbon next to a 32mm ribbon will result in a 3mm difference in spacing between the medals (in some cases) but as the medals are all different sizes anyway (and indeed some are crosses), it won't make too much difference.
