I got my 1990, a beautifully underrated car. Mine has a single 3 inch exit with a mid resonator and single cat, 17 inch wheels and a 10% overdrive pulley. It drives amazing, and is shockingly quick. I really am in love with this car.

How long did it usually take to start on really cold mornings with the old engine? Did it take longer when it hadn't been used for several days?
@CheckEngineLight94
@CheckEngineLight94 Жыл бұрын
The old engine was about the same as the new engine. It doesn't get too cold in the garage, so I'm unsure. I've gone weeks without starting and have no issues. I turn the fuel on, wait a few seconds to begin cranking, and fully engage the carburetor starting circuit. This is with the old style carburetor. Not sure if the "economy" carburetor is different. It never takes too, too long; but I am still perfecting my technique.

I had an Essex 3.8 N/A and it accelerated pretty quickly. But the 12+ forced induction doesn't seem that much faster. I think I'd rather a N/A 4.0 cologne. Pretty much the same power numbers. I'd just shove that in THEN add 8-10 psi boost.

Hungary has a lot of trabant fans, so much so they manufacture most parts. We import them as well as probably whole world, especially since even trabantwelt resells them... My car was sold in Poland in 1984, and from what i have seen in its history files, I am its third owner and it has never left the region where I live. As I am writing this, I'm trying to fix the brakes

What is the oil-gas ratio? Don't think I've ever seen a Trabant with zero smoke in the exhaust.
@CheckEngineLight94
@CheckEngineLight94 Жыл бұрын
I'm actually running a pretty heavy amount of oil at 25:1 since the engine only has 600 miles on it and is still breaking in. The oil is Lucas semi-synthetic two-stroke oil. It does smoke on start-up and acceleration following a long period of idle.

Could you squeeze a little bit of power out of these engines or are they not made for that. I believe it comes with expansion chambers from the factory but could you port it and stuff?
@CheckEngineLight94
@CheckEngineLight94 Жыл бұрын
Yes, plenty of people tune them with expansion chambers and such. I do not have experience with that, but they are quite robust. I think a bit more power can go a long way since it is 26hp as is. Tuned correctly, it's really not that bad in stock form. I plan on keeping mine stock, but if I were to adjust it, I may use a carburetor kit as that is the first step many take to improve the engine response.

It impresses me how you engage neutral with the vehicle in motion, at all times.
@jerkwaterspoon
@jerkwaterspoon Жыл бұрын
The trabant transmission does not have a free wheeling device on 1st 2nd or 3rd gear, only on 4th gear, so you have to be either on the gas or in neutral. If you coast on 1st to 3rd gear, you starve the engine of oil.
