My dad was three hours away for much of my childhood. Just before turning fifteen my mom, siblings and I moved back in with my dad. In a few days I’ll be twenty one years old and still living with my parents in this same shitty, tiny, falling apart house he’s had since I was born. So many people talk about their father abandoning them and often times never seeing them again. I’ve lived in the same house as my father for six years and he doesn’t know me or my siblings at all. I last remember him hugging me on my fifteenth birthday sometime after eleven pm. Both my parents forgot about my birthday that year, and the only reason my dad realized maybe twenty minutes before the day ended was because my sister and I were joking about how everyone else forgot. I laughed, but it still hurt.
